Hello all, I am new to this forum and would like to introduce myself. I purchased a 1999 X1 Lightning late last year. The original owner had just replaced the fuel pump and regulator. The bike ran well for a month or so. There is a post actually in the archives in reference to this “Archive through October 29, 2015” > 1999 Buell X1 Fuel Pump Question (Fuel Prime Doesn’t Turn Off)” I thought that the fuel prime running constantly would not be an issue until in Sept last year the bike would not get fuel at all. There is no fuel prime “buzz” when ignition is on. It has been in storage since. Is there a way that I can check to see if the ecm or the fuel pump has failed? I now have funds to make the fix if I need to purchase an ecm. Thanks for you guidance. |

Does the neutral light come on? Is the kickstand down? |

The run/stop switch must be in the run position for the pump to turn on. I know, silly, but it happens. Not to me of course, never to me. OK, maybe once. Or twice. |

Yes, neutral light comes on. Kickstand is down, and run/stop switch is in on position. |

Try bypassing the kick stand switch. It will cut the ignition if it's bad/intermittent. |

The kickstand has been modified already. But I can check to confirm. My hunch is the fuel pump or the ecm, just because of the issue of what was happening when I purchased the bike. The fuel pump prime would not turn off after a few seconds when ignition was turned on. The fuel pump prime stayed on continuously. |

When the ignition is turned on the fuel pump will build to pressure then cut out until you start the motor. With the motor running fuel pump will run constantly. Without touching the accelerator. Turn ignition on and use the starter button. Important to resist the urge to use the accelerator, the ecm is programmed to set the fuel to the correct mixture for start up. When you open the throttle during start up you stuff that correct mix and choke the bike. All this is fine if you have set the idle speed correctly. Pia if not. When the motor is hot, then set the idle speed to around 1000 rpm. |

I give Alfau's recommendation a go before I left for work this morning. still no luck. No prime and no start. I tried a new relay to check if that was the problem. What could cause the fuel pump not to prime? |

"The kickstand has been modified already" Apologies...I thought I was posting in a different thread, about the ignition cutting out. |

Try clutch in, N, and kick stand up when starting it up. Worked for me. There's another kill switch attached to the clutch. |

finding neutral again might be worth a try. (Message edited by alfau on June 22, 2016) |

Thanks x1bully and alfau. I tried both and no luck. So I am trying to check if it's the fuel pump or ECM. I have done the following using a test light at the fuel pump connector with key on and kill switch on: *gray wire I have continuous light *brown/yellow wire I have continuous light *battery positive to black wire I have continuous light With the b/y wire on all the time how can I tell if the pump or the ecm is bad? Again, no prime at all when key is on. Thanks |

Update. I disconnected the fuel pump to ecm at the connector and hooked up the fp directly to a power source and it seemed to work fine. Relay checks out good. Wiggle test performed. Any other test I can do before spending a paycheck on an ecm? |

Maybe someone is willing to lent you one to try ,or ask in the parts wanted section! |

Good idea. Thank you brother in buells. Also, thank you to mighty mouse and 651lance for giving me some ideas on what to look for. This is a great forum. Hopefully I will catch that gremlin. |

ECM needs to see several signals before it will allow fuel pump to function, in neutral or clutch switch in, sidestand up, and I know later FI bikes had a rollover switch, so am assuming it does as well. If this is bad the bike will not start. |

I know later FI bikes had a rollover switch, so am assuming it does as well. Your assumption is correct. Even the early FI Buells had a Bank Angle Sensor. Unfortunately that's about all I can add to this thread, 1313 |

Can he bypass the bank angle sensor or does it need to read an amount of ohms? That's the last thing I told him he could check. |

I "grounded" pin 3 of black ECM connector to battery negative. The fuel pump ran, albeit continuously like before. THE BIKE STARTED AND IDLED GOOD. We are making some headway! This should rule out the BAS since the bike started. I will need to check pin 3 for a good connection at the ECM and also make sure the fuel pump has the correct current draw. Maybe the original owner replaced with an incorrect fuel pump when I purchased the bike. (Reminder: this is when the fuel pump worked but ran continuously when the switch and key are on.) |

The nice folks at IDS tested my ECM. They discovered an open circuit at pin 3. So I ordered a new ECM. I installed it over the weekend and all is right with the world. The bike is running great. Thank you all again for helping me troubleshoot. |

Wow! I didn't realize that IDS were able to debug them too. That's really good to hear. |
