So tonight I just grabbed a "new-to-me" 2001 X1 Lightning! Super stoked, but I do have my work cut out for me....it's not been ridden that much, and needs a bit of work...first is going to be a good wash, second is going to be fresh oil, and then I'll take it for a spin and see what I'm working with... Shifting is a bit clunky, not quite sure why, but if it's anything like my other bike, hoping an oil change should remedy the finicky clutch... So...Anyone know where I can get a Service Manual for this thing? Looked around, and only found some shady sites wanting me to pay, and I'm not in the business of paying if I'm not 100% sure what I'm going to get... So, all that being said..bear with me, no owners manual, or svc manual came with the bike... -What's the capacity and recommended oil for the motor? Filter size? -Tranny fluid...Again, recommended weight/capacity? - Any how-to's y'all think I should see as a new owner...mostly looking to get it into solid riding shape at the moment...no major mods planned...it's bone stock with ~14k miles and I think I'm going to keep it that way for the time being... Looking forward to my new toy! It's awesome so far (3 hours into my ownership...) (Message edited by pyrplhaze on September 23, 2013) (Message edited by pyrplhaze on September 23, 2013) |

Welcome to the club! If you shifting is clunky, it's probably working correctly Tranny fluid... I have tried Mobile 1, royal purple, walmart, but the best one i've found is actually the HD brand "Sport Trans Fluid." It takes about .9 quarts. MAKE SURE YOU FILL IT WITH THE BIKE ON FLAT LEVEL GROUND!!! Oil.... There are two methods... 1) regular OIL change, and 2) the "7 quart oil change"... You might want to do #2 if this is a new-to-you bike.... Basically you drain the oil pan, fill it up HALF WAY with fresh oil, remove the oil return line and stick it in a container (re: empty 2 liter bottle). Turn over the motor until you see fresh oil. Stop the bike, replace oil return line, change the oil filter (fill new filer half way with fresh oil), and fill up the oil tank HALF WAY. Go take it for a spin until hot, then with the bike on flat level ground, top off the oil until its 1/3 up the dip stick. Always top off the oil with a hot bike! You really dont go through 7 quarts of oil... More like 5 or 6. You waste a lot of good oil, but it ensures that there are no pockets of old oil getting mixed in with your new oil. Oil Filter - It requires the sportster oil filter which is the short one. I usually buy the long oil filter from the HD dealer figuring that the few extra ounces of oil will keep the temps even. Good Luck! |

Welcome to the site I just purchased mine in june and have gone thru the whole bike even though it only had 8858mi on it. Never take someones word what they've done to the bike. A 20w50 is good if your staying in weather above 40 deg. Fram's # is 6022 for the filter, K&N's is 171 (-c if you want it in chrome). Oil tank holds 2.5 Qts. Tranny holds 1 Qt. My local shop suggested Drag Specialties Gear & Chaincase oil. Use 91 octane or higher for gas. As for the shifting you may need to adjust the clutch or primary chain slack. I've been selling copy's of the service manual for desktops and laptops if your interested in one? Like I said don't take the last owners word, go over the bike completely. MM |

Thanks for the link, Pike! Is this manual good for all year models of the X1? I thought it was a 2001, but looking at everything, it turns out it's an '00. Either way, I got it for a song, so I'm not terribly concerned. Mighty- I plan on a thorough run-through of the bike before I really put it through the paces...Thanks for the info on the part #s and capacities. X1Bueller- Outstanding advice...I may do that 7qt change, as I've no idea when proper maintenance was last performed! I do have one question for you experts, not sure if this is an issue, or just me new to Harley motors/trannys (like I said...only had jap cruisers til now) In my test ride, I took it up and down a back street, was able to run it up into 3rd, but didn't have room (or the want to deal with cops) so I didn't go past 3rd gear. It's a bit clunky, and I hear some "clattering" type noise when shifting, but my real question is- When parked, I can't run through all the gears...it stops at third...is this normal? Does something need adjustment? Possibly fixed with fresh fluids? Forgive my questions if they come across as such, just trying to figure out what's normal and what isn't!! I just got the insurance on it, and tags will come during the lunch hour today, so this evening I'm going to pull it out on the freeway and see what happens, so they may be premature questions, but I still have them nonetheless! Appreciate your help, folks. Hoping to someday be one of the guys that has one of those "badass" X1s! I ask a ton of questions, but also like to help out where I know I can... |

If your going to change the tranny fluid anyway you might want to pull the primary cover and take a look at your chain and tensioner. Your transmission is also tucked away in there. I've never actually tried but I'd assume you should be able to shift through to 5th without a hitch. I wouldn't want to be doing highway speeds and find a transmission issue. |

Good advice. I gotta pick up a set of Torx drivers, and should be able to get to that soon! |

There are some subtle difference's between the years, but I think mostly related to the rear shock and rear isolators. Other than that they should be the same. When you say parked do you mean with the engine off or just idling? You won't be able to shift through the gears without the engine turning. If it doesn't want to shift while idling either rev it a little when shifting or let the clutch out a little bit until you feel a clunk then pull it back in and try shifting again. The sportster trans is kinda clunky in my opinion anyway. |

Awesome. I figured that overall, they were probably just about the same bikes, with minor tweaks here and there... As far as the tranny is concerned, that allays some of my concerns- I was trying this with the engine off, and parked in the garage... THanks!! |

As I recall there's only T-27 on this bike, right? Don't need a set, just one. Everybody has their own choice of oil. If a HD dealer is nearby, one fairly safe choice is HD oil, and their Primary+ for the primary case. I use Mobil 1 - Motorcycle for oil now though. |

Welcome all new owners, Be careful of what you put in the tranny several alternators have been wrecked by the wrong oil destroying the stator insulation. the short list, fluids change rocker box gaskets isolators belt tension / wheel bearings grenade plate ( spring plate in clutch ) |

I've read around on here, and it appears many folks are comfortable with Mobil 1 20w50 in both motor and trans...that's what I was planning on doing, just for simplicity's sake, would that be a bad idea? Edit** thanks for the info on the torx bits...if anyone can confirm that only a t-27 is required, that may make life a bit easier for this n0ob (Message edited by pyrplhaze on September 24, 2013) |

You can't really shift through all the gears without the bike running. They way to do it is... -turn the bike off -put it in first and let the clutch out -rock the bike forward and back as far as it will move -clutch in and shift to next gear -rinse and repeat for each gear up and down This will also work when you have the bike off and you cant find neutral. Also a great way to shift up to 5th so you can turn the back wheel by hand and rotate the motor. |

When you have the primary cover off, check to see if it has the updated chain tensioner. With the motor off you should be able to shift thru all gears by rocking the bike back and forth. |

I use Mobil 1 engine out of various weights in the engine. V-Twin formula if I can find it. You want to run gear oil in the primary. Mobil 1 80w-90 is what I have used before and it worked for years. Be sure to NOT overfill it. I overfilled mine and I think i may have used a heavier weight oil at the same time. I think this has lead to my recent clutch problems. |

I use amsoil motorcycle oil in the engine and tranny and it works well. 20-50 |

Awesome, folks. Thanks for all the advice!!! I think I'm going to like this place! Cool people, and solid advice. I appreciate all your help...I'd like to apologize in advance for all the dumb questions that are to come in the next few months. Hopefully it won't take too long until I'm able to actively contribute!!! |

Loosen the bolts in the derby cover (little cover in the bigger primary cover) gradually going around in a circle, otherwise it will "" and bind a screw and make you strip a head. |

I am going to have say "use HD Formula + Trans/Primary Lubricant". Others may have had luck with other fluids, but I have not... ++ what Reepi said, and it is a square o-ring seal, so do not overtighten! (Message edited by kc_zombie on September 24, 2013) |

OK... Here's stupid question number 1, of many to come... I see in the manual the procedure for changing the engine oil. Sounds simple enough, and not much different than I expected... My question is with the Primary/Transmission...I think I'm just not familiar with this setup, but I only see information about how to change the Transmission fluid (sec. 1.10) So my impression is that I need to do the following, can someone confirm/correct me? - Change motor oil...got that one - Change Transmission fluid...basically pull the drain plug, empty it, and then pull the primary cover and add the trans fluid (I presume this is the Mobil 1 80w-90 that X1 Bueller is suggesting) - Primary?? I see nothing in my short read through the manual about changing fluid in the primary...can someone point me to the section in the svc manual, or gimme a quick rundown on what that entails? THANKS!!! |

Tranny and primary are the same chamber/ fluid. Harley Big Twins have three separate oils to change (engine, tranny, and primary.) (Message edited by Sportyeric on September 24, 2013) |

Primary and transmission share the same oil. Unlike a big twin which has separate oils for each component. So what you are going to do is: 1. Drain the primary/trans oil by pulling the plug. 2. (Optionally), removing primary cover according to your service manual, which I am guessing you have. 3. (Optionally) inspecting and/or replacing the chain tensioner. 4. Reinstalling the primary cover, properly tensioning* your chain tensioner and refilling with the fluid of your choice (I still recommend HD Formula +) * PM Buellistic for his “PRIMARY 101", I think it will help you a lot. PM Me if you need a factory service manual. Now good luck, we're all counting on you... (Message edited by kc_zombie on September 24, 2013) |
