So I've been floating around but haven't posted in a while because well the bike has been running amazing with no complications, that is until 2 days ago :/ I will try an be as descriptive as possible in explain whats going on here. so here goes (see photos for reference) M bike started spitting this nasty black substance, the consistency of tooth past, out of the breather/catch can from my 42mm mikuni carb, the bike started running rough and stalled. I replaced the old air filter as well as made sure all the lines were clear to the carb (no blockage). The Carb did have black soot behind the air filter, so I cleaned it out with carb cleaner. and replaced the filter to the breather/catch can as well. It started just fine but was struggling to idle, if I gave it gas it tried to stall. eventually it straightened up but idle was still low so I adjusted the idle to about 700-1000 rpm. Now all seemed good and little test rides seemed fine, until I went fast. Took it up to about 80 and was cruising just fine, when I let off the gas and clutched to get off the exit it died?? came to a stop, tried to start it and it fired up just fine and idled fine, went a little bit and it seemed fine but if I wined out a gear and clutch dies. My guess is not enough air, not enough gas, or to much gas and is flooding. Any suggestions? I will answer an questions as fast as possible. Thanks in advance for all the help!

Is there any recommendations for something to run through my system and clean out the grime? Anyone with this carb know where to start for balancing the air/fuel ratio? |

I'm going to say that if the bike was fine on the 18th, and is now not happy: You have gone through the carb, done a clean-uo, and didn't find any major issues. You also haven't changed anything in the carb before the issue started. Have you? If not, the problem is somewhere else. Start with a complete inspection of the ign system, starting at the ign pickup and ending at the plugs. That includes making sure no connectors are loose or corrupted, the ign coils are showing the proper resistance, ect. Do a compression and a leak-down test. Black toothpaste out of a breather filter is most likely not a carb issue. Hope this helps, Dave |

I would suspect that you have a oil line decomposing from age and putting rubber into the oil. Your carburetor is known as a rock of stability. The crank seal in our year (I have a '99 S3, also carbureted) is the old single-lip design; you should change it even though you have low miles. (Message edited by harleyelf on June 23, 2013) |

You know it does have a allen plug that will let you drain the main So does the primary case. And you can remove the oil pump. After draining the oil from the oil tank. Check the tank clean it and all the lines replace if necessary. You flush the cheap oil and drain it. If your problem persists then you might have to take it apart. Oh are sure don't have a vacuum leak? |

The oil coming out of the breather might be an indication of a blown seal or maybe the bike was laid over? If the case is being over pressured (blown crank seal) and forcing oil out of the breathers that would be putting oil into the carb intake which could be fouling up the plugs as well and completely messing up the fuel-air mix. I'm assuming the head breather hoses are routed into the carb intake. Thats what the pic looks like. |

Sorry this took so long, I have been busy and also I wanted to make sure I had the solution before posting. compression tested showed everything good, the plugs were nasty black (but they had 10,000 miles on them), replaced those. I replaced the air filter, drained the gas that was in it, replaced the breather filter , removed all the lines from the carb and made sure there wasn't any blockage. Put it all back together and diluted some injector/carb fuel system cleaner in the new gas. It struggled to run at first but then the idle began to steady out. Been riding it some but not going far just in case, seems good, it is a little rough in the lower rpms, probably because I think its running rich. |
