My friend picked up a Super clean 2000 X1 with a race ecm.
He ran it out of gas today.
Not running good now. Pops.. sputters.. etc.. I remember seeing a thread on it somewhere. Does or can, the ecm have to reset itself or remember codes. Thought I read info like that somewhere here, but cant seem to find it now.

Will plug it in with ecm spy since I have a cable. My friend is pretty bummed out. Any thoughts...?

It run out of fuel the ecm tried to compensate for running lean,fresh tank of fuel an ride for 5 minutes 3,000 rpm or so should reset the ecm.

The one time I ran my S3 out it did the same and cleared up once it had time to reset the ecm.

If not may have sucked crap in the injectors.

Not sure,
Not to argue with Jramsey ( That would be foolish) But from what I understand about the early X1 is that the main fuel metering determination is done with the throttle position sensor and not by feed back by some sensor like the rear O2 sensor?
If the ECU were to notice the lean condition caused by running out of gas and that would be noticed in a half second, (gas,no gas) then it should have went to full rich to compensate. Then I would think the the ECU would notice, now full rich, and compensate just as quickly as it did when it ran out of gas?
End result, a bike will now run as well as it did before it ran out of gas.
Dosent appear to be the situation, so, something else happened.
Suck debris from the tank only if you run the tank empty?
It does not have a floating fuel pick up, it sucks fuel from the same place if the tank is full or empty.
Did I help much ? Bet not. But Im interested in what you DO find.
Love fuel injection problems, this is what I do for a good part of the everyday work day.

I ran the S3 dry once (that was a long push), put gas in and it ran fine. Maybe there is something else wrong, like stated, clogged fuel filter?

What is the best way to clean fuel injectors if that's the case?

How many injector cycles did your friend do?

A fuel pump is cooled by the gas it's pumping, and if no gas, the pump gets hot.

Hope it's a simple fix for your friend.

I ran my 99 S3 out of gas once did same thing but after a couple miles or so around 3k rpm was fine

Saw the same thing happen to a guy on a '99 S3 back in '07 at NRHS. Dan put it on ECMspy and reset the ECM and it fixed the problem in no time.

Tuber FI bikes and early XBs were very bad when run low on fuel,would see it on dyno---bike suddenly going lean. No use trying to tune until you fill it up. So,yes,it was seeing a lean condition and compensated for it. Need to run it in its "learned fuel" area--and it is a very small area on early X-1's etc. 2000,2500,3000 rpm at 16,20,and 24% throttle. Or go in and reset AFV to 100 with ECM-Spy.

Lager,all fueling based off TP sensor but adjusted by O2 in rear in the learned fuel areas--then applied to entire map.

I recently ran my 2000 x1 out of fuel. It did the same thing. I too have a race ecm and he was very cranky. I had no choice, but to refuel and ride. The bike rode like crap if it got anywhere near 3200rpm. It took it a good 15 miles to clear up, sputtering, backfiring, sounded and ran like hell, but it cleared itself up.

Not at all what I wanted to happen, but my fuel sensor is now OOS. Sucks to be me. The bike is great now. He runs like a scalded ape as always : )

A quick look at the AFV value will tell you all you need to know as what is causing the bike to run like crap. Hook it up and let us know what you see. My money is on a value well over 100%.

1999 ECMs had an issue where they didn't know when a bike was running out of fuel, and the AFV would skyrocket. It's a bad thing, because the scenario goes like this:
1) While running out of Fuel, the AFV would climb rapidly to compensate.
2) Bike dies and then pushed to gas station, all the while cooling off.
3) Fill with gas, start, and the cold start enrichment kicks in. Between the AFV and the enrichment, the plugs foul almost immediately, prior to getting the bike warmed up and the AFV reset.

Until it got reset, and remember, this was before anyone had VDSTS or ECMspy, it was a difficult thing to get it fixed.

But Buell figured it out pretty quick and modified the code. There was a 99 reflash that should have taken care of all the released bikes with that issue.

Everyone above is spot on.. my money is on an AFV of 150. That's been the case in the handful of times I've seen an FI tuber run out of fuel.

Just to be safe though, I'd replace the fuel filter as well after resetting AFV to 100. Whatever was in the bottom of your tank got "cleaned out" and for no more $$ than a replacement filter costs, it's not worth the risk to go without replacing.

I've run my X1 out three times.
The first time I was far from anything at all.
I kept it going as long as I could, even standing on the pegs and riding the bike at a tilt to get the last drop out.

I remembered reading here that it would foul the plugs once restarted so I romped the crap out of it and it did finally clear out by the time I got back to Albuquerque.

After that, as soon as it sputters, I kill it. That way it doesn't confuse itself.

Ok Boys...... The AFV was at 150. Reset to 100. It runs like it should! GREAT! Cleared all the codes, but the "Engine" light is still on. Saving that for later......

My 99 S3 had a host of minor issues last year, all related to ECM/fuel. While on a 2500mile trip my V-twin light would come on at start up, and then after a mile or so go off. I was hundreds of miles from home, so after checking all the vitals (oil/voltage/obvious air leaks) I decided to run it as it seemed normal.

My mileage went in the toilet and halfway across France I ran dry. I filled up (after a walk and a wait)antd the bike ran poorly but strong enough to continue. My speed dropped and dropped until I was only able to manage 50 mph or so, any faster and it felt like fuel starvation. I finally got home and tackled the problem a few days later.

I thought I had fuel filter issues, I did not. I thought I had injector issues, I did not. I thought I had fouled plugs, I did a little bit. The problem played out as follows:

My engine temp sensor wire broke, hence the V-twin light coming on. With no Engine temp sensor, the ECM assumed the motor was very cold and went to full rich, hence the crap mileage and fouled plugs. When I ran dry, I aggravated the problem and my last few hours at half throttle and low speed only compounded the temperature/rich/fouled problems I was having. Even after I fitted a new sensor and new plugs, it ran like crap.

I took it to CPO Harley Buell here in Stuttgart, those boys know Buell, they reset the codes, did a TPS reset and helped the ECM learn all the correct parameters again. It runs better then it ever has and feels more responsive than before.

I suspect my temp sensor was not giving good readings as it was failing and my ECM learned all sorts of bad habits. Inspect the engine temp sensor and wire lead as a precaution, it is cheap and easy, kinda like my second wife.

My 2002 X1 was delivered last week after having the fuel tank drained and the bike in covered transport for @ 2 weeks (purchased from original owner is Texas).

After several attempts at starting and knowing nothing about Buell's I started some basic troubleshooting. Before pulling the fuel filter I pulled the plugs and sure enough they were fouled. I cleaned and reinstalled them and the engine fired right up, a bit rough though.

I took the bike for a ride and it started to clear up, run smoother at low and mid RPM's where it was running rough before.

I purchased the VDST Software and cable from someone on Craigslist, installed on my laptop, hooked up to the bike and did a TPS reset. After further reading I realize I did not pay attention to the AFV setting and will need to go back and take a look at that parameter.

The bike is running much better now but I will certainly pay attention to the amount of fuel in the tank knowing what will happen if it runs dry!
