Hello, i just got a 1996 s1 over the weekend. needs a battery and some tlc. i'm new to sport bikes but not to motorcycles. i have done some searching and need some answers; 1) can i get new gas tank for this? the paint is bubbling and there is a large scratch on it. 2)is the swing arm a standard sportster swing arm because it sure looks like one. 3)is it me or are there not too many after market stuff for this bike? 4)how can i tell if the "recalls" have been made to it? 5)what is the rear wheel horse power on this? 6)i understand it is easy to lift the front tire on this thing where do you guys get the best deal on underwear?! |

I'll try to help. 1.) Painted tank-can have it redone at body shop with OEM matched paint 2.) 1.) Maybe, Try a dealer but it won't be cheap. With the right paint a good painter can fix it. 2.) No. 3.) It's a low production bike what do you expect? 4.) What Hootowl said 5.) What Two_Seasons said if stock.. if it is not stock could be more. 6.) You get used to it. |

I've never gotten used to the acceleration lunge of my Buell. Hope I never do. Skid marks...no problem. Just one of the many strange sensations your S1 will cause. You've joined a wonderful bunch, these Buell folks. Welcome to the Madness. |

I have been on a Buell for more than 10 years. I didn't say it wasn't fun anymore, I just don't get surprised when the front wheel lifts. Oh and if think they are fun stock let Cycle Rama have their way with it and get ready for perma-grin. |

Dave, It's mostly a matter of me gettin' older and slower. Wheelies scare the piss outa me now. And I spent a buncha time on Kaw triples when I was young, so I used to love 'em. A riding friend and I were marveling over the new stuff. We're both late 50's. Stuff like the new baby Tiger, the new gen ducs, and one of us finally said "Ya know? We're just too late." My X1 is my perfect last bike. Just fast enough to give my quad bypassed heart a boost now and then, and bad enough to let me pretend that I still am. |

My M2 is closing up on 120 rwhp, It could almost be a unicycle. I hear ya though.. As fast as it feels a punk on a new 600 could mop the floor with me. |

Here's some info on bubbling pain from the Knowledge Vault here. There's plenty more if you look around. --begin quote-- Here is the skinny from Al at American Sport Bike. This info came directly from the good folks at Buell that were kind enough to forward it to me when I'd asked about how to prevent paint bubbling on Buell Tube frame tank repaints. This is that they use to paint the tanks originally, and Buell hasn't had a problem with PAINT bubbling, only decal bubbling. They won't warranty that if you follow the info contained herein that you won't have paint bubbling, but I'm guessing you won't have a problem if you follow it. Al I hope the Info. send helps, if not drop me a e-mail. I will get some more info. Details for the following: PPG primer we use Primer is K36 PPG Hardener is K201 PPG Reducer can be any of the following DT-895 DT-885 PPG base coat types we use The Base coat is Deltron 2000 which is DBC PPG clear coat we use DCU2042 PPG is speed clear Hardener is DCX9 PPG Reducer can be any of the following DT-895 DT-885 |

It's got one of the pre recall shocks with the ugly SRP. Rear wheel HP is no where near 80HP. The 96 had a STOCK Sportster motor. You be lucky if it is 65HP. The swing arm is the stock 96 S1 swing arm. The rear CF fender has been chopped down and a license plate bracket fabricated to mount on the tail. Is that an S&S carb or just the air cleaner? I've always liked the look of CF ham can or the Force Winder on the S1. As an air cleaner, the ham can works the best but the Force is very minimalist and works good enough for a stock motor. The bubbling paint issue, prep is the key. I know someone that used the above directions and it turned out perfect. No bubbles after 2 years. Looks like someone already did the batery conversion so your good to go there. The front rotor has been replace with the late model style. The original was probably falling apart. As mentioned above, American Sport Bike is your headquarters for cool S1 parts.. Brad |

i thought all lightnings had the 91 hp, since they all came with the lightning heads, and not the stock sporty mill like the s2 did. |

76 hp Buell engines stopped with the S2. S1, even 96, had the 91 hp "Lightning" engine (funny coincidence, eh?) with different heads, pistons, and cam profiles among other details. S2 never got a Lightning motor from the factory, they saved that for the S3. Nice score on the bike. Lose that V&H muffler and you'll be amazed at the midrange and low end torque you'll pick up. And if you weigh more than 50 lbs, reshape that license plate frame. Before you slice your rear tire with your plate, going through a dip. |

If memory serves, the 96's were pretty much stock. They may have had lightning heads but they don't do much. Far less than the thunderstorm heads and pistons. Now that you mention it, I don't remember for sure if the 96's had lightning's or not.. One of the other old schoolers with a better memory will chime in I'm sure. |

Oh yeah, nice Banke shifter! Is that a Banke frame brace as well? The battery thing,,,, the original battery style was no longer available. It was a real small square battery. There was a retro kit available that allowed a standard battery, the voltage regulator had to be move with a new bracket. |

My 1997 S3T has the same HEADS and first step SCREAM'N EAGLE CAMS ... The FACTORY HAND BOOK said 91HP at the CRANK SHAFT ... It DYNO'ed at 60.5HP(off the show room floor and broke in) and did a little TUNE'ing got it to 76.7HP and at 375 RPM's lower ... |

Sorry folks...I wasn't asking, I was stating fact. Other than the S2 / S2T, and S1W, every single Buell in 96, 97, and 98 had the Lightning motor. S2/S2T had the sporty motor in 96. S1W in 98 was the first Thunderstorm mill. '99, Thunderstorm took over the whole line (but with different cams in the M2, and with EFI on the X1 and as an option on the S3/S3T). If you doubt me, it's right on the poster. I really don't make this stuff up...the garage houses right now, a 95 S2, 98 S1W, 01 M2L, Uly, CR and Blast; I've also owned in the past a 99 M2 and a 96 S1. That's correct, sorry. From my '98 brochure: "1998: Buell introduces the 101hp Thunderstorm engine in the S1 White Lightning and S3/S3T Thunderbolt". That's what I get for not owning an S3. Yet.
