I've got a small leak at the bottom of my rear jug. It's gotten a little worse over the course of a year or so. It only leaks at op temp. There are little bubbles that come out along a tiny bit of oil. Sometimes when I start it at op temp it'll backfire, puke, and blow a poof of smoke from the leaky area.

My question is, how long can I ride it without replacing the gasket? If the leak doesnt get bigger and the bike still runs smooth, am I ok? Could this cause any permanent damage.

Thanks, Nate

Should be OK for awhile Nate. Just keep an eye on it. Do you know if the head gasket was ever changed without doing that base gasket?

I don't know how you have your breather ports out of the heads setup (i.e. stock configuration puts that air back into the intake), but you might want to check to make sure that they are not blocked, since blockage could result in excessive positive crankcase pressure.

As far as I know none of the gaskets have been replaced, except the front rocker box that I swapped last week. I got the bike at 10,000 miles and the leak had just started, very small at first. 8,000 miles later this is what it looks like 400 miles after a cleaning.

It seems that the breathers are ok. They are routed into the Buell race air filter and show evidence of puke(after cleaning). Would it perform better if the breathers were routed externally like non CA bikes?

Naa, if he sees bubbling, it's leaking.
If it doesn't get worse, it's just an annoyance.
Maybe you can nurse it along tis summer and replace it during the winter.
If not, it will only take 4 hours or so to do both cylinders. Most of your time will be taken up by scraping off the old gasket.
That part SUCKS!!!

Seems to be split between the Cometic and HD gaskets. I lean towards the Cometic myself.. About the same price for a top end set.

The paper stuff doesn't work so good on these buggers....at least not for me. I've had to change too many of them (not all mine thank God.).
The metal are MUCH better.
However, lots of folks forgo the gasket entirely and use Yamabond or the like.
