hello buellers, I have a 1999 cyclone and my clutch isn't holding my bike when it is stationary or allowing me to select neutral.
I have to remove the clutch cover and adjust the bit that pulls on the spring every time I ride it. I had a 1988 sportster and the same thing happened but it was easy to see the nut shaped part had rounded off. there doesn't appear to be any wear on the outside of the nut shaped part but when I adjust the clutch the screw feels a bit rough. Any suggestions craig

Could the THROW OUT BEARING PN 8865 have gone bad ???

Could it be that you have your PRIMARY CHAIN "TOO TIGHT" ???

Could the SPRING PLATE(also known as the GRENADE PLATE which only lasts about 50K miles)PN 37977-90 gone bad ???

This "GRENADE PLATE" should be replaced with "ONE" Friction PLATE PN 37911-90 and "TWO" STEEL PLATES PN 37913-90 ...

Thats PN 8865 ...

If it is that, you can buy the bearing at a local BEARING STORE(supply house)...

The part number they will need is on the bearing ...

adjust the clutch per the manual and keep the cable play at the handle close to 1/16.
do not over fill the trans.
+1 on Buellistics info, for this and all the others while you are in the maintainence mode.

When adjusting the clutch, should the engine be cold or warm?

There is a newer type of detent plate in the shifter assembly (part 33656-90 is the original number) that can cause jumping out of gear and false neutrals. It's a cheap part - just a small metal plate. This might be part of the problem. (?)
Also known as the pawl. Recontoured to make shifting easier. Stock on 2000-up. Part# 33656-90A is for the updated piece.

Thanks Buellers. The bearing that the adjustment screw goes through was stuffed, replaced it for $7.50 now clutch works fine.
