Hey all,
What is your average MPG? Please list the year of your bike and what mods you have. I am buying a house pretty far from my job. I am considering selling my M2 for a small displacement machine because of the long (24 mile one way, rural roads) commute. I never checked to see what I was getting with my M2 and now, here in WI its pretty chilly out: ) Thanks, Frank.

41-47mpg on my 00 M2 depending on how I'm riding, 200 main jet, I forget the slow jet size, 38 maybe, Supertrapp muffler and Bartels intake...

For comparison my 96 T-bird gets 20-22 in the city and up to 27 on the freeway (3.8 V6, K&N+opened intake and 2.5" exhaust), and the wife's new Fusion gets... 20-21 around town, and about 23 on the freeway (3.0 V6, K&N).

Consider this, you can probably pick up an older Honda Rebel or Nighthawk (250cc) if you are trying to get AMAZING mileage, like 70+mpg, and they go for pretty cheap so you won't need to sell your [collector's edition] Buell to do it. (HD took majority ownership of the company in '98 and the '99's were made with their financial backing. So you'll note that was when many of the older bike's little quirks were resolved... I'm just sayin...)

I commute about 45 miles each way, with about 3/4 highway and the rest back roads. I'm getting in the high 40's. I have the race exhaust, ignition module and headers and ham can intake (came with the bike). I'm not sure if it was rejetted. I love this bike for commuting!!!

My 2000 Cyclone got about 45 - 50 MPG.
190 main, 45 pilot, ham can race intake, stock header with SuperTrapp slip on (15 disc's if memory serves.).
It got as high as 54 at highway speeds if you kept your right wrist out of it.. I didn't do that very often.

It won't get anywhere near that when the motor rebuild is complete.
Cams, heads, pistons, header, carb, etc. all that will tend to drop MPG a bit : )

Thanks guys! Great info. I am considering an 08-09 Ninja 250R (rated around 65mpg). With the mods I have, it looks like 40-50 mpg from my M2 depending on riding style..Hmmmm. Considering the power difference, I think 40-50 mpg isn't so bad! I think I'll hold on to the M2. Will adding an aftermarket intake along with richer jetting hurt MPG? Keep the info coming!! It's a bone stock 01 and I get 45-55 mpg. Depends on how jiggy I'm riding.

I went from 35mpg to about 45mpg as soon as the my engine broke in. I had to rebuild it at 2500k due to base gasket leak. I now am at 6500k and the mpg jump up a bit.
I am running 185 main and 48 slow jets...V&H exhaust....

With my '02 M2L I've gotten as good as 56 mpg, but I consistently get 50-53 mpg cruising back and forth to work trying to go about 75-80 mph.

I recently went on a 600+ mile trip with some buddies and got similar mileage to my buddy's 900cc Duc FWIW

99 M2 Super Trapp exhaust Buell carbon ham can air cleaner. I get 50 to 52 mpg on mostly rural highways with some really slow towns including Dundee worst traffic jams in the state of Oregon. Don't know the jet sizes sorry.

I figured I better add some details regarding my setup, since one Bueller sent me an e-mail asking...

My '02 M2L is basically stock, except for a Forcewinder and a Thunderjet Slide Kit. I've spent a considerable amount of time jetting and tweaking the carburetor in order to cure the Keihin cough and to try to prevent knocking (we only get 91 octane here in Phoenix).

The main jet is a Dynojet DJ205, but I have no idea how this relates to HD sizes. I basically sized it to make sure that the bike didn't knock at WOT. Then, I adjusted the needle just high enough to make sure that it didn't cough.

FWIW, I bought the Dynojet Thunderslide Kit long before I found the BadWEB, and I don't think it is a necessary addition. I'm pretty sure that similar results can be obtained for less by using off the shelf HD parts and possibly some cheap shims for the needle.

2001 M2L 45 idle jet, 195 main, race ham can intake, stock headers, Wileyco muffler.

I run 50-55 mpg on quiet, 65mph and under country runs, about 50+mpg with 80mph peaks/70 average speeds in expressway drones. Extended high speed running, say 75+ with brief 100 mph spurts drops it down into the 40's. ( all figures above are, of course only on a closed course race track off road. Not on major xpressways or back country public highways, oh, no, not me. That's my story and I'm sticking with it, your honor.)

As to if an intake mod will hurt, I doubt it. Is the "bread box" intake/filter setup stock?

Modified by:

A: removal of the Helmholtz tube, replacing it with a venturi ring ( 95 cents ) freeing the filter from it's little doghouse & fabricating a clamp to replace it...or

B: removing the filter & doghouse, plugging the resonance holes in the helmholtz tube ( milk jug caps ) and clamping a conical K&N filter on the helmholtz tube...

Both vastly increase flow with little cost, and keep the ergonomics & look of the stock system. Changing from an airbox modded as "A" above to a Race hamcan filter really didn't improve breathing on a stock motor, but stayed on for looks.

Keep the M2!

I'd do the idle jet & screw change, it really improves warm up times & idle, and if you are running a 195 stock main jet, you probably won't have to change it until you do both intake & exhaust changes, but do make sure it's jetted right, based on either throttle response or dyno testing with an exhaust sniffer. You may need a 200, or even a 190, every bike is different.

i get 44 city and EXACTLY 50 highway. i also have the 42 mikuni on my bike.

I'm getting 45 mpg on my 01 M2 Cyclone. I'm running an HRS42 Mikuni with a Screaming Eagle filter and a SuperTrapp can with 18 disks.

02 M2 with an S-2 fairing, V&H exhaust, Dyno jet carb. kit, Roller Rockers w/ a slightly larger rocker ratio and K&N filter in the stock bread box. I have seen as high as 65 mpg cruising @70mph and the lowest I've seen was @40 mpg in traffic and beating the crap out of it!!!
It is hands down the most fuel efficient motorcycle I have ever had!!!

97 M2, Sea Level Arizona. 200/48 jets Forcewinder intake, semi baffled Force exhaust. 10 lb right hand= about 50 MPG. YMMV.

I don't have an M2, I have an X1. I also have Blast which I use for commuting purposes. Several performance mods and it averages 55-60 MPG through town with some highway miles.
Keep the M2, ride a Blast. Cheap, cheerful, economical, reliable and fun. (Also, it's really easy to work on)
