I am having a hard time trying to decide what type of air intake to put on my 01' X1. What are all my options for the air intake. If you can try to post pics and where I can get one. Try to let me know how the performance is with them too. Thanks for all the help guys, Matt Tully. | ||

You really need to do a search. There are several direct fit intakes available. Any intake that fits a 40mm CV carb will fit. You just either have to drill a hole for the IAT sensor or relocate it. I am using an older S&S intake that I took off a sportster. | ||

I am using a carb model force winder and i am running the FI as well. I just had to mount the ats sensor, But i would recommend getting the FI filter so the sensor is in the filter and not the elbow part as it gets hot when parked after riding and has trouble starting once the sensor heats up! | ||

Matt - If you want to use the 40mm CV intake you just have to modify it to fit the sensor or relocate it somewhere. (My bike is FI also.) I have my sensor relocated up next to the steering tube by the diagnostic plug. The carb intakes are usually cheaper than the FI intakes and it doesn't take very much effort for you to adapt it to your bike. | ||

Here it is in the almost raw form.  Thing needed to do this mod are as follows 1.2 standard cold water pipe caps which came from ace hardware i took the snorkel in and tested the caps they should have a tight fit but will pop in with pressure 2.some plastic epoxy for gluing in the caps 3.a k&n filter part# rc-3680 usually less than $40 4.a saw or other means of cutting the snorkel(if you want to) 5.common drill and a bit that is 1\2" 6.one cut down allen head bolt to bolt the metal u shaped metal bracket. 7.Some paper gasket material 1/8" thick works well. The tricky part is getting it on there just right, The original 3 Allen bolts can be re-used if you get a T handle allen tool and run the bolts in and out of the front of the throttle body until you can get the bolts tapered neck through the front of the throttle body enough to clamp down the intake completely(this is just how I did this). Use the cut down bolt on the top of the intake right next to the elbow, You will see what i mean!! Total cost of this mod $45 or less! (Message edited by preybird1 on June 20, 2009) | ||

Mike - You will need to shorten the snorkle tube and use a smaller filter but it will fit inside the factory bread box. There are a couple of peeps here who have that set up. | ||

Mmmi_grad: Sent Pretbird1 pictures of my OEM Snorkel in the OEM Air Box ... He did his thing on what would suite him, ie: if you make it short it does better TOP END ... "i" kept my Snorkel as long as possible and it still fit in the Air Box, ie: wanted all the where "i" ride bottom end "GRUNT" ... Used the K&N Tapered Oval Filter Part Number RC-3680 ... Nice thing about this SET-UP you can ride in the "RAIN" no matter how hard it is coming down ... If you want pictures of my SET-UP e-mail me(Ljenne73c@verizon.net) and you will receive them ... Thanks Buellistic and Tdman I am really concerned about riding in the rain. Remember huricain Rita that came out of TexAS AND THEN ACROSS THE COUNTRY? I got to ride home from a weekend of partying 300 MILES in constant rain. I would do it again but damn that really sucked. And hey Buellistic, I havent played around with your info but its the best thing i have ever seen as a real solution. Thanks and next time I disturb things ill let you know how it goes. Hey Prey, I found an extra stock snorkel from my 02'M2. Looks exactly as yours pictures. I think I can use it for my 99' FI X1. I also have a paper carb gasket & a metal spacer. What is the order for these & do you have a close-up picture of how you mounted the sensor? One more question. I bought a used CF air cleaner assembly for my M2, but looking at the back plate it has several orefices, some plugged. Can I use this as well for my X1? See picture.  | ||
