Is any one using this/these? External oil drain back lines from you cylinder heads to the bottom of the cases and windage tray.

I bought a motor that had them installed. Had some issues with muffler clearance where the fittings screw into the cases at the bottom of the bike. First time I rode it the muffler vibrated against the brass fitting and broke it off. Oiled the back tire and I fell down pulling away from a stop sign.

If you install a drainback setup, be real careful where you put the fittings!

BUELLers:

The HEADS have good DRAIN BACK holes on the EXHAUST VALVES ...

There are places to put the DRAIN BACK fittings for the INTAKE VALVES(careful of the intake ports), ie: below the rear cylinder, in the sump at the front front lower engine cases ...


IMHO, the rear of the cam cavity since the oil pump sucks the oil out of the cam cavity ...

There were a couple of companies years ago that made WINDAGE TRAYS, have no idea who might make them now ...

I'm putting in a windage tray, external drain back hoses and an oil bypass valve on the 86 Sportster. The windage tray came from www.YankeeEngineuity.com after a long search they were the only ones that had one for a four speed motor. The oil bypass came from NRHS. Don't know how it is going to work everything is still in pieces, but since I just got laid off I'll have a lot of time to work on it.

Zippers sells windage trays , both my Buells have one.

I believe S&S makes windage trays as well. I am told their built-in windage trays (in their SA cases) are superier design to any add-on trays.

Actually, I like the cheamber and intake design of the '86/'87 heads. The combustion chamber is a hemi shaped bathtub design, heavily sought after by porters before the XB/1200R heads came out, and the intake has S&S style flanges to hold the carb without having to get a "carb support bracket" when upgrading the air cleaner.

And, though it may have been the suckiest "evo" sportster motor designed, it was still well beyond the ironhead and evo big twin designs of the same/previous years.

All of the potential power it can make and it can't put it to the ground.

The worst stator/rotor/clutch shell idea EVER.

I learned that fact FIRST HAND...But only AFTER machining/building the rest.What a waste.

The oil lines'/windage tray are nice items on a successful build up

Charging system who needs a charging system. Charge the battery between rounds on the drag strip and between runs at Bonneville. You run what you have especially if you dumped a bunch of money before we new the difference. Back when 4 speed Sportsters were new it looked like under the clutch basket was better they didn't fail like the big twins did, little did we know at 30,000 miles give or take a few thousand the stator would grind into the clutch basket.

Why are external oil returns needed there are 2 1/8" passages drilled through the cylinder barrel and doweled to the heads some oil pooling is good as this lubricates and cools the valve train
the external lines make some sense for racing but for a street bike?
sounds abit like added complexity

Well,when my engine was new it ate TWO baskets inside of a month.

Big POS,my expectations of Harley type engines are more in line now with what they're engineered to perform at.BONE STOCK.

Doesn't Erik hate complexity for complexities sake?

hi old dog,
yes a bit of oil is good but these get so oiled that it acts as a heat dump and so gets to hot,also the quicker you get the oil back to its tank the less parasitic drag there is,
