Yesterday was a perfect example of why I like tubers so much--and will undoubtably never own an XB. Did intake seals on 2 bikes, an XB 9 in the morning and an X-1 after lunch. The XB already had a bunch of stuff off-- airbox cover, lower plastics etc and it still took me most of the morning,so say 2 to 2 1/2 hours. You know, the XB drill for everything--remove muffler, rotate motor down etc.
Then after lunch I did the X-1, less than an hour--- heaven!!
TUBERS FOREVER!!!
Heck I did a cam timing on my GSXR 750 and that was easier than the intake seals on the XB!
As an aside here, about 1/2 of all the Buells(and alot of the Harleys) we get to dynotune have bad intake seals so check yours regularly!

Jim would intermitting high idles possibley indicate failing seals?

Sure could. Spray around seals at head with carb clean/brakeclean etc and look for changes in idle.

Pfff, at least the XBs don't eat isolators!

Plus they are much better looking bikes than the XBs.

Oh the price of beauty and style!

The early XB's pre-'06 had an appetite for front isolators too.

I have never done an isolator on my x1 because they have never gone bad, And i ride it rough and wheelie a lot, So far so good. I do know that if the front iso does go out on an xb they immediately get very dangerous, IT WILL TANK SLAP!! Very freaky on e-way.

Do not ride it if this happens, I was behind my brother when his went out and he just about wiped out, So when we got home i took it for a ride and holy SH(*, So we started looking at the bike trying to figure out what was up and there it was the iso bolt and the rubber were a whole 1" apart!

Hey FMJ is the xb iso harder than the x1

At least when I go and turn the key on my XB, it actually starts!

Back into my corner I go till I find a real weakness to the tubers

"Jim would intermitting high idles possibley indicate failing seals?"

Let me guess.. bike runs fine and acts normal until it warms up then it likes to hang at 2000 rpm when you get off the throttle? Give it a few seconds and it'll go ahead and drop to the normal 1050.

That's an intake gasket leak. I've done mine twice, both times had those exact symptoms.

oh yeah.. back on topic. I like tubers because even a mechanically-retarded guy like me can do basically any maintenance they require. (after asking a few questions on BadWeb of course!)

Just one of the reasons I sold my XB and went back to a Tuber. Ease of working on. Love it!

I seem to recall at March Badness last year, at least 3 tubers being worked on at the TWO campsite. One XB, but it was just a drained battery.

Tuber owners are picky and like their bikes finely tuned.

BTW Ether ( starting fluid) carefully applied will make a intake leak show up when all else fails.

Its the best /easiest way to check 2 stroke crank seals.

Learned that watching Gary Nixon in the pits at Dorsey Speedway, Dorsey Maryland 35 years ago.

I was told the color is called Billet
Metallic. Let me know if that's incorrect. It has a sorta purplish hue under the fluorescent light.

As for that stand, I needed one asap and found it at the local Harbor Freight store for $50. It's a welded aluminum piece and actually pretty well made. It didn't come with the attachments for lifting at the bottom of swingarm, but they could be ordered. Again, no time for that so I made supports from Grade 8 bolts with hose slipped over for cushion and grip. Only downside is that it's from China.

That stand looks small enough to pack on a trip.
Might have to get one before I spend my tax return...

The only reason the plugs fouled is cause some dummy left the gas on while the bike was leaned over too much...
