I'm stuck between getting the shoei x-11 roberts2 helmet or the arai rx-7 corsair edwards. does any one on here have either helmet ? I dont know which one to get | ||

I bought the X-11 last season, upgraded from my TZ-1. HUGE difference in weight, wind buffeting, internal material (removable) and style. I love it. Airflow is killer, it BREATHS. I've never owned an Arai though so I don't have a comparison point. | ||

Both are great helmets, just make sure you get the one that fits. Historically, the primary difference concerning fit was in the chin bar. If you have a long chin and/or nose, Shoei was the way to go unless you liked making contact with the helmet. Does anyone know if Arai has changed this? | ||

I have a arai helmet now and love it, its just getting old. The strap is all frayed and it doesn't have a removable liner. I like both paint designs on the helmet's listed above but I cant find anyone who has the shoei for me to try on. The arai is a close fitting helmet, but I like that. It dosen't make you look like some huge bobble head doll. Guess I got to keep searching for some one who has one of the shoei ones for me to try, because I'm not dropping big $$$$$ on a helmet that dosen't fit right. | ||

I do helmet painting and I can tell you that Shoei and Arai are 2 excellents manufacturer of helmets. It's a question of fit. Some people found the Arai better and other Shoei. I think it depend on the shape of your head. The RX-7 is a top of the line helmet. Light, comfortable and with very good ventilation system. Try both and take the one you feel better with it. | ||

The recomendation from all the major manufactures' is that you're helmet should be replaced every five years. My new Arai actually has the date of birth on it and they give the lid a two year shelf life before first use. After that, wear it for no more then five. As I understand it, perspiration, oils, heat etc. degrade the materials used that are there to protect you noggin. I personally liked the custom fitted Arai so much that I've bought another one (now I have two RX-7s' - a Hayden Wired and a Kitigawa) I'm very happy with the Arai and will happily recommend one. That said, a few thoughts on Arai and fitment: Arai has stopped all internet sales of their product for a reason. They want you properly fitted, if you go to a real dealer (as opposed to a shop that just wants to sell you something), they will be able to change the internals of the helmet for you, making it fit right the first time you actually wear it out. To this end, Arai has 3 different shell shapes (for various heads) and something like 20 internal pad options. After it's done correctly, the lid fits like a glove, and mine is the most comfortable, best venting helmet I've ever worn. OK, I'm done for now. If you have any questions, please post 'em. | ||

That Arai thing sounds really great, but I went to three or four of their local dealers, and none of them have the adjusting pads, etc actually on hand to do the fitting they claim. They only claim the custom fitting, they don't deliver. This is in San Francisco, not out in the boondocs. In general, the rounder heads go for Shoei, and the longer front to back go with Arai. Both are good and equivalent in performance. The other thing that has come to light recently is the whole debate about DOT vs SNELL and that the DOT is actually much better for typical street use. There are some $90 helmets that have tested just as effective as the $500 Arai/Shoei for shock reduction. It was discussed at length on other posts. I have Arai by the way, but as much for the fit, and paint job, as for their protection. |
