Does anyone know what performance increase this would give the 12xbr if any?

What Blake said - I've got a stock stack, my chopped down stack (that whole length vs radius at opening thing), and an XB12 airbox. I'd like to get another one and drill it out, and I'll be added a heat blanket of my own when I install all this junk in a couple weeks...betcha it yields similar results and will have cost me about $50 and a couple hours...LOL

420, the reason that we 'dig' on Corey is precisely what Blake mentioned - he has blatantly lied to many of us time and time again. Even if he managed to come up with something that lived up to his wildest claims, for pennies, I still wouldn't give him any money - but hey, that's just me. My communications with Hillbilly were all straightforward and informative, and I've never seen anything that I could call dishonest from Trojan, either. For that reason they deserve our business.

You want your XB9R to do 160mph? Talk to Corey, he claims his is capable of it, even though physics says it's not possible.

If I was still at tilleys and had the old dyno sheet from the test I did with just the 12 airbox you would see that it alone for $30 some odd bucks gave 3 to 4 hp on top and really smooths out the mid range. never did a test with drilling the 12 airbox.

english thanks for all the hard work and I know it is. testing takes a crap load of time

"Can you fill the gaps Mark? We need a test of the stock intake with the XB12 airbox lid, one with a swiss cheesed XB9 lid, and one with a swiss cheesed XB12 lid. Until then, I remain very skeptical that any investment in the above systems is money well spent. "

I would love to see that. I have the 9 with Buell race kit and 12 air box. Would love to know if I should punch holes in air box and how.

Also, can and should we make our own heat shield?

Thanks for all the testing and hard work!

Seat of the pants reaction for me was that the 12 air box was WAY EFFECTIVE in mid range improvement. Now, if we can get more with an ice pick and this heat shield thing, we will do so, no?

Anyone have any insight into the heat shield materials? Looks like this could be a home made item and work regardless of whether you modify the other components of the system?

Bubba - Please refresh my memory. You did a dyno run with a Drummer, race ECM, K&N and a 12 airbox, didn't you? I remember something about you had to clean the K&N and then make the dyno run. Wasn't the result something like 82+ Max hp with no dip in the torque curve? I think you posted it here but I can't find the thread.

it was 83 hp. found out during the testing of the drummer and the airbox, my laziness never cleaned the filter. so I did the run with dirty filter than cleaned it and yes it was at 83 hp.

420,

I run a D&D, race ECM, K&N, and a swiss cheezed XB9 airbox cover and there is definately NOT a hole in the midrange. We are basically running the same set up so I don't know why you would have a midrange hole. The D&Ds definately crank up the midrange.

I have just recently ordered a 12 lid from Daves. So has anyone taken a drill to one yet?

Bubba - OK, 83 HP & no midrange dip with a Drummer, race ECM, K&N and a 12 airbox. I'd really like to see what the above setups put out in actual HP & torque throughout the range. The stated increase in hp just doesn't tell enough of the story for me to spend money. How about it Englishman? Its a given that all XBs aren't created equal but I'd still like to see your numbers.

well all dynos will read a lil different so anyways take it this way. with the drummer ecm filter and 12 airbox.it is about a 12hp gain compared to stock.

those with the d&d won't feel the hole in the midrange because that is where the d7d is at its best. its the down befor 3500 and after abot 5500 where the d&d could use its help. and no that is not a slam against them. just a fact.
so don't beat me up

"i run D&D race ecm 12 box and K&N
and there defenitly IS a midrange dip"

That flies in the face of every dyno of an XB using a D&D muffler that I have seen. The D&D provides a significant boost to midrange. There is certainly no dip.

Proof?...

The "dip" that Mark talks about is probably similar to that exhibited by the race kit muffler as seen in the dyno plot below.

That's probably the type of dip Mark is seeing with his Wileyco muffler.

Bubba,
Thank you for that confirmation. I now recall you posting those results on BadWeB back when you did the dyno testing.

So we know that just fitting the XB12 airbox will yield an additional 3 to 4 HP peak and benefit the midrange. Great job Drummer man!

Thank you, Mark, for all of your work, and who knows how much of your time, that went into this comparison test! You now seem to be picking up quite a "to do" list of further testing as requested by some posts on this thread. Sorry about your luck, but no good deed goes unpunished!

Best of luck with your racing!!

Keith is planning on making some runs with the Swiss cheesed XB9 airbox (see below) and with the XB12 airbox with and without holes, to complete the above plot.

Thanks to those of you that have read/posted/emailed me.

Yes, it is my intention to get some graphs up. At the dyno I was hampered by a printer that only spewed red ink tending to faint pink, thus they almost illegible. The tests took way longer than I expected, plus my day job exploding around me, I have not been able to devote anywhere the amount of time I really wanted to and its been as much as I can do to get the data posted that I have. Just don’t expect them in the next day or so.

I’m on my way of the out the door, right now (Day job again!!), but I will answer questions as soon as I have 5 minutes.

Mark; you may know this already, but I think some versions of Dyno software will allow you to save the chart as an image file - which would be much easier for you to deal with/post than printed graphs.

Or send me the dat files and I'll plot them for you. It's the least I can do. : ) The dyno operator ought to be able to save the files to disk or even email them if the dyno PC is networked; the files are ridiculously/surprisingly small.

And... a swiss cheesed airbox lid covered with duct tape is as good as a stock airbox lid, no? Credit for that idea goes to Keith. : ]

Thanks again!

Could you confirm what intake config your baseline run used. You say stock, but I think you mean that the snorkel was removed and that you used a K&N filter, right?

LOL...I ended up with a 'stock' airbox again?

I never did any dyno runs with my bike during all the intake modifications I did, from cutting the velocity stack down to holing the airbox to making my own 'Force' intake, so I've no idea what the differences are. I taped it up after removing the 'Force' intake just to get everything back as close to stock as possible.

I'll be doing dyno runs not long after I get back, but that will be with a Drummer and 12 airbox with a home-made heatshield. -=shrugs=- Maybe if I feel like blowing more money I'll get a second XB12 lid and drill it out for a comparison, but I need a new header and cover and I've already sent Daves WAY too much money recently!
