I know HD changed the primary cover design on the 1200 Sportsters in 2004. Did Buell make the change at the same time? I have an 04 XB12 and I want to replace the primary cover with the black wrinkle finish cover. Do I need to find the 03 and prior cover or the 04 and later? Thanks. |

I think you need an '03 to '05 XB9 primary cover. From '06 the shifter shaft is a larger diameter. I've seen someone here say that you can't get the '03 to '05 cover anymore but you can upgrade the shifter shaft to the '06+ version pretty cheaply. I just found the link http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/444337.html |

Thanks. So there are no Sportster models that would have a matching primary cover? There are a whole lot more of them floating around. As a student, I am on a really tight budget. |

There's a chance. I don't know. I believe the Sportster motor was updated with a lot of engineering from the Buells at around that time The XB primary case is an H-D style part number (with a - instead of a .). (I won't quote the late model one here because it may confuse) The other thread gives an H-D casting number for the cover. That may be helpful. Perhaps a friendly H-D Buell dealer might be able to cross reference the '04 XB cover and a Sportster cover. Hopefully you'll get other replies that can help Pete |
