O.K., Christmas is over; the days are getting longer Summer's Coming!!!
It's time to start thinking seriously about how we're going to do this "invasion". Are we going to have a central Rally location, and then wander around the Island, or is it going to be a moving tour - kinda like BRAG's Northeast Adventure? To be honest, I like the idea of having a day or two to wander around and socialize and see the local sights. It looks like about 1500 miles and two ferries to get there, so a little time off the bike would be nice. What does everyone think?

Crusty,

There are two boats that get here, the short one (6hrs) and the long one (14hrs). My suggestion is for everyone who is interested to meet somewhere in Nova Scoita and catch the boat in North Sydney. Take the long one, get a good rest and enjoy the ride - the boat run along the south coast and you can see the shore of the island at times. I would meet you in Argentia, Newfoundland (many American Navy Guys would remember that place) and ride into the city, or just start the tour. I will be taking time off so I can show you around - the good stuff.

The other option is to take the short boat and then ride straight across the island which is about 10 hrs or so. The main highway cuts right across the interior of the island, scenery is nice, road is decent and there are lots of places to turn off and just enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

I am going to put something together over the next week or so but I would like a date or somewhere near the date that this will be possible.

There's been a lot of talk on the Welcome Home thread about the Invade the Rock tour. Newfie has volunteered to be the host rider for this event.

Now a date needs to be set. Late July or early August were the suggested times. I'd like to propose one of these weeks (based mostly on the time of year mentioned):
July 25-31
August 1-7
August 8-14

We could pick a couple of meeting locations on the route there. One logical location would be Michigan (home of Spidey). Maybe another location on the east coast for people that may be coming from that area.

I'm just throwing out some ideas.

Dennis

How about if we all meet at the Ferry at North Sydney at Midnight on Sunday Aug.3? My wife and I (and anyone who wants to join us) will be coming up from New England, and we could link up with the people who are coming in from the west. This is going to be a classic, destined to be talked about for years to come. Another enthusiast conceived and executed rally that won't be forgotten.

Crusty,
I was thinking of trailering over to save travel time/fatigue. We'd be looking for some place to leave either the trailer and vehicle if the rest of the family doesn't come.
I'll want to set up connections early enough that I can worry about the other details as the trip gets closer. I found out about my trip to New England four days before we left last summer which didn't leave much time for prep. I'd just as soon be a little better prepared this time.
BluzM2 & M2Me were both talking about coming and I've got a couple of other non-Buell buddies that might want to come.

Mike,

A lot of guys that do ATV trips across Newfoundland leave their vehicles (trucks and trailers) at the Marine Atlantic Terminal in North Sydney - apparently there is security there 24hrs a day and the lot is next to the building.

ATV Trips - Unload your ATV in North Sydney, drive right onto the boat on the ATV - secure it to the deck and go for a 6hr nap. When the boat arrives you drive right off onto the old railway bed that goes through the heart of the island all the way to St. John's (almost 800miles). Back in the late 80's the Government stopped running a train service so all the old tracks were hauled up and turned into a trail for recreational use. In the summer ATV's and in the winter Snowmobiles.

Sorry for the sidetrack.

Back to the plan.

Really other than various festivals there is a llot to do here on the island at any time during the summer. It turns out that our Provincial Government is really pushing Tourism these past few years and it paying off. We are getting more out of province visitors every year and appears to be the spot to go for vacation.

The first Wednesday of August is the Annual St.
John's Regatta St. John's Regatta which is the oldest sporting event in North America. So you may want to go for the first week of August or if you go for a week earlier there may still be ice bergs still floating around and the whales should still be here. The whales come close to the shore during that time of year chasing the capelin as that is what they feed on.

For those coming from Wisconsin it takes 4 days to
get here, that is to the city where I live, three days to get to the other end of theisland. So I figure we could tentatively plan it like this:

Day 1 - Friday, August 1, 2004 - Wisconsin People
leave early in the morning and travel to Detroit to meet up with Spidey and the Boys - overnight at Spideys

Day 2 - Saturday, August 2, 2004 - Leave Michigan
and ride for 500 miles or so across Ontario which should put you at the eastern end of Ontario or into Quebec if possible. Personally I'd do an Iron Butt and ride 1000 miles and that would put you into New Brunswick.

Day 3 - Sunday August 3, 2004 - Leave real early
in the morning and make the run from Ontario to North Sydney which is roughly 800miles. Catch the ferry at North Sydney to Port-Aux-Basques at 12:00am (night) and sleep the six hour boat ride

Day 4 - 6:00am Monday, August 4, 2004 - I will
meet you at the boat and we will start to ride for St. John's taking in along the way,Port-Aux-Port Peninsula (photos attached) and will probably go as far as Glovertown or Clarenville, NL to stay overnight. Of course taking the scenic route on those twisty roads I love so much.

Day 5 - Tuesday, August 5, 2004 - Up early again
and ride from Clarenville to my parents place in Cappahayden, NL (Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula) where we have a three bedroom house, giant wood shed and a two story garage we can crash for the night )Based on Numbers Coming. This is the last night of the 'George Street Festival so instead of my folks place we can go onto St. John's to take in the last night of the festival -- good drunk for those drinkers and a good overall party for the non-drinkers. Of course those that drink will be Screeched IN as
honorary Newfoundlanders.

Day 6 - Wednesday, August 6th, 2004 - St John's
Regatta - Attend the Regatta and in the evening ride to my folks place to overnight.

Day 7 - Thursday August 7th, 2003 - Ride from
Cappahayden, NL to Argentia where we can catch the boat to take you back to North Sydney, Nova Scotia. This boat ride is about 14 hrs and the scenery is very nice, for most of the trip the boat follows the southcoast of the island. Its also is a real nice chance to have a good sleep and rest for the trip home.

Day 8 - Leave North Sydney and head back to the USA.

The only thing we would be missing is a trip up
the Northern Peninsula which is absolutely spectacular and the riding is absolutely fantastic. - we could extend Day 4 and extra few hours of riding is needed to see part of the peninsula or take an extra two days and go right to the end (to see where the vikings landed 1000 years ago)

Please give me some indications on what you want to see or do.

Do we have a date set yet? I am more the iron butt myself, 800miles/day minimum, so depending on what the other people were doing I would possibly get there on my own, I also might just want to cross into Canadiaville at Sault St. Marie, and meet up at the Newfoundland ferry on the designated day. Haven't been able to get through to spidey or maybe he's just at me for wearing all the Venom gear to the 20th.

Tom,
If I was taking 2 weeks I wouldn't hesitate to ride. But after wasting a lot of time on the Interstates on my trip last summer when I went to New England, I'd rather drive straight thru. Once we get in Penn. or New York then we can take off on the bikes and enjoy the riding.
We got caught in a thunderstorm leaving Chicago that no only slowed us way down but kind of took the spit and vinegar out of us. Much better to deal with that in a cage than on the bike.

Mike,

Why would you drive through Penn or New York to get here? In my opinion the quickest was is blast straight across Ontario, Quebec (Montreal is beautiful as is Quebec near New Brunswick) then across New Brunswick - Nova Scotia to the Boat.

Some details to follow,

If I were doing it again I'd do it in two days.

Its roughly 1,841 miles and I'd split it up in two days or I'd do an Iron Butt 1000mile day and a then an 841mile day.

Just my thoughts

That's a thought for one direction. I haven't been to Maine yet (barely made it into Vermont & NewHampshire last year)so I thought that it would be nice to since I would be in the neighborhood. If we don't trailer that route would be a definite.
I need to hear back from my potential compatriots what they think.

Ahh, well. I guess I won't be going on this one, then. I probably won't be back from Japan until the first week of August, and aside from the girlfriend thing (I'm not planning on getting out for a month or so...), there's no way I'm going from a 38 hour day, 22 hours of that spent in plains and trains, to a 500+ mile day right away on the Firebolt.

North Carolina in September, here I come...
