Well I havnt even ridden a Buell yet but Ive been obsessing about getting one. From lurking the boards here Im thinking of getting a used 03 or newer XB9. I figure its all the motor I need as Ive only been around dirtbikes most of my life and dont need to do 150mph around town to and from work. Iam wondering if there are some issues with the 03's that you guys would suggest holding out and saving more for a newer model. I know some of the problems are hit and miss like wheel bearings and belts but I dont want to get stuck with a bike prone to countless problems. Im not afraid to turn a wrench and consider myself mechanical but I really want to enjoy my first street bike. As of now Im planning on spending around $4500-5000 for a used bike. Also, Im 5'9" and am curious what I would look like on the Buell. Anyone my height have a pic of yourself on your Buell? They seem really small. Im probablly just being paranoid Also, aside from the possible advantage lower insurance rates, are there any other advantages of getting the 9 instead of the 12? Thanks for any info guys. |

9 - rev's quicker and higher 12 - more torque I'm 5'11 and have a 12S. Click on my name on the left hand side to see my profile pic. |

I put over 20,000 miles on an '03 XB9S before trading in on an X and had ZERO problems with it. Lots of rear tires but that was because of the way I used the bike. I am an inch or so taller than you and found the bike felt very compact at first but after getting used to this and the many other differences between the XB and darned near anything else out there, I came to love the machine. It was reliable, inexpensive in every way and more fun than the law allows! |

2003 XB9S with 8000 miles, ZERO ISSUES . I paid $4600 last year for it. It looks small because of the short wheelbase, although the XB sits quite high and feels similar to a dirtbike to me. Im 6 foot and 165 lbs., my XB feels better than my H-D to me and I would ride it anywhere. Good Luck ! |

I recently purchased the CityX, coming off of a Honda Valkyrie. The Valkyrie is a big powerful cruiser as everyone here is well aware. My CityX will smoke my Valk and any of the V-Twins I have owned in the past and with my 5'10", 195lb frame I find it to be comfortable. I had the opportunity to pass in front of a large group of windows last weekend, and I just had to check-out myself in the reflection, wondering if I too may look a little large for such a short wheelbase. I was not disappointed. Anyone riding one of the Streetfighters looks badass. Just make sure you are wearing your gear and you will look all business. As far as the motor goes, I was afraid the "9" may be a little small also. It rocks and for most riding situtions I doubt you would miss the little extra the 12 provides. A few of riders on the board who work for dealerships and could ride either the 9 or the 12, ride the 9. I have been lusting over the Buell Lightning series since my first ride on one back in 2000. These are the best yet either way you decide to go. |

Thanks for the responses guys. So if you were me what year would you go for? I think the 2002 and older bikes look ok but prefer the 2003 and newer design. Would you hold out for something a little newer based on design upgrades such as belt drive etc? |

It depends on the previous owner's care of the XB. Newer model year = more money and usually less mileage. No problems for my '03 XB9S w/ 10k miles. I'd find the newest one I could afford. |

Rode over 7000kms on my 2006 City X so far. Fun, comfortable, no problems. And it gets looks where ever I go . People are always asking a lot of questions. The first day I got some guy came up to me and said " That's the coolest bike I ever seen". and wanted to know all about It. |
