IM INTERESTED IN BUYING A NEW BIKE, IM WONDERING WHAT THE PROS AND CONS ARE ON BUYING EACH MODEL. I WANT A 07' XB12R, I AM NEW HERE AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT TO DO FROM THE PROS!!! 9R 0R 12R? |

YUP..ONE REVS(9) A LITTLE MORE THAN THE OTHER. THEN THE OTHER HAS THAT GROUND POUNDING TORQUE(12) OVER THE OTHER. TEST THEM BOTH AND DECIDE. |

I'll go out on a limb and say get a 12. It's more of what you buy a Buell for. If you prefer higher revs and lower torque and a bit more smoothness, there are a zillion fine choices from japanese companies that excel in these areas. Torque is what makes Buelligans. Go for the 12! |

first off, TURN THE CAPS OFF please. Either one will wheelie, you just need slightly different technique. There is only 10 lbs difference between a 9 and a 12. I still say go ride both and see for yourself. Things to consider Difference in price Insurance? |

It is only slightly heavier (Buell site says 10 pounds) and has substantially more torque - (Buell says 20% more!). So let's see, according to the Buell website specs I guess that's 20% more torque and 12% more horsepower for less than 3% increase in weight. You decide.

Another thing to price (if you are so inclined) is getting the 9, then letting one of our trusted tuners put on a big bore kit. You get almost the displacement of the 12, with the rev's of the 9, and an engine tuned for power, not an engine tuned for various EPA guidelines. I like my 9, but I'm not out to impress anyone. I only had test ridden 9's (and my old M2 Cyclone, which was a 1200cc) when I bought my 9sx. I finally got to test ride a Uly, and while I like the bike, I was suprised to find that the 12 motor felt worse (to me) then the 9 motor. I expected to be ruined for my XB9, but it was quite the opposite. I almost felt like the Uly would have been a better bike with the 9 motor. It's really close though, I would not blame anyone who chooses either. You really need to take some test rides and see what your preference is. My point is that while it is probably a tossup between the 9 and the 12, a 9 with an 1150 or so big bore kit and a good tuning would probably be a slam dunk. Right now I don't feel the need for more power, and I am 16k into my XB9SX ownership experience, and I came off an M2. Maybe in 4 more years when I am hitting 50k miles, I will want more power and rebuild the engine bigger. Maybe not though. |

As I may have mentioned previously, one can own more than one Buell in his lifetime. A strategy I recommend, is to purchase a Nine first, ( the 2003's can be had very reasonably), and get the hang of things Buellistic. Then, after a season or two, if one feels the "need for speed", as it were, one can trade up the a Twelve, and be in a better position to take advantage of its increased torque and speed. If not, one can just enjoy the better economy, smoothness, and general good manners of one's Nine. That's what I did, ( I traded up the the Twelve), and I certainly do not regret it. |

On the 9 I enjoyed keeping the revs up to make the most of the power. With a passenger it was a tad on the less powerful side. Then again I was use to the S2 and S3 1203cc engine. Since the 9's are so inexpensive it would make for a good go fast toy. The 12 is fun in it's own right. I'll have to replace rear tires more often. I also noticed the front wheel tends to leave the ground more often than the 9 did. They are two different beasts. A good suggestion is to start off with the 9 and enjoy what it has to offer... then add the 12 to the stable. A race kit might be best added mod. |

I say Buy both,then you have the best of both worlds. Got both sitting in my garage and both are real nice bikes. One always seems to do something better so you'll have to weigh it out and flip a coin. |

I guess it all depends on what you want the bike to do. You can get a 9 and make any 12 owner pissed when you pass him in a corner, or you can get a 12 and a copy of your dyno sheet and join everyone with the "I got me a 1200! It's the best!" attitude. Now all that's left to do is pick your side of the fence. |

they're both fun....I've logged a ton of miles on each (my personal bike is a 9s) but I'm at a loss as to which I prefer. The 12 has way more power and is a little faster, but seems to hit the rev limiter way too fast. the 9 has noticeably more room to play in the rpm's & is an easier ride. But it lacks the raw power of the 12. ride both & you decide. I'm lucky enough to work for a dealership with Buells in our rental fleet (0ne 9 & one 12). |

I have a friend (hopefully he'll chime in) he started out with the first XB9R, after an accident he bought an XB12R, he really misses his 9, and has often talked about trading. I've had an XB9S for well over 47,000 miles, and am very happy with it (I have nothing to compensate for ). All that being said, when ever the 3%ers are out rippin' it up in the hills (there's a good mix of 12s and 9s) everyone comes back with a giant grin, and no one complains about their choice. |

I never owned a Buell before getting one this year, in fact I have never owned anything that came with 2 cylinders! I've had singles and 4s, and although I loved all of them, I decided to purchase a 12R. There was an adjustment to be made, but I love the bike, or more specifically its "character". Just go for the 12 so you wont regret it later... |

I prefer the 9. The 12 really does not ahve that much more power. Not sure where some of you folks are getting that from. Yes, I've ridden both. Guess that like saying well my girl is average. But to most she be a 2 out of 10..... lol |

It may sound ridiculous, I like both the engines of the 9 and 12, but I prefer teh looks of the 12 much more and was a big influence in my purchase. I am a fan of the darker frame, and the colors available. I also really like the sound of the 12 over the 9. Both bikes are amazing, and I don't think you can go wrong with a Buell. I know I had to postpone buying a new bike last year because insurance was much more for a 12 (under 25 rates suck) and it wasn't worth it. |

I am a fan of the darker frame, and the colors available. From my perspective, there is definitely some truth to that. The yellow on the '07 12R with the dark frame looks much better to me than on the '05 / '06 9R, but black logos and wheels help its cause a lot. Still, it doesn't stop me from having the wallpaper for the Red '07 9R on both my work and home computers though . . . |

On the other hand, the 9sx in blue is a FINE looking motorcycle, and I like the black rims better then the amber. (aside from the fact they are chipping up). |

I agree with Daves analogy of a small block verses a big block. I've had '70's Chevys with both and I've had the 9sx and now the Uly. They are capable of the same things, you just have to understand how to make them do what you want, and then figure out which way you like to ride. BTW, the 9 wheelied with WOT clutched gear slams, and the Uly ... just whack the throttle hard. |

thanks for the info guys that will give me a few options to check out. i will be carrying a passenger once in a while, so it might be a good idea to have the extra torque of the 1200 to get moving. |

Quick question. could someone please explain why buell went with the long stroke solution to achieve 1200cc's VERSUS a short stroke larger bore? thanks! |

Johnb, Buell was able to use the same barrels. The 9 is the 12 with a domed piston, and a longer con rod, connected to the crank closer to the center of rotation. Conversely, the 12 is the 9 with a flat piston and a shorter con rod, connected to the crank farther out from the center of rotation. It didn't cost them much, if anything, to go to the 12 that way.
