Especially for those of you who DIY, how many actually inspected the Primary Shoe?

Of those who did, what did you find?

For those who took your bike to the dealer, did you pay to have it inspected? What did they find, did it need to be replaced or was it in spec?

I will soon need to do mine and will take care of most things myself. reading the Svc Manual, might as well replace it if I go thru with it all takes to check it. Wondering though if it is really necessary. I have kept my primary chain adjusted and reason would indicate it is probably just fine.....But then again?

The owners and service manual on the 04' Firebolt do not indicate the inspection of the shoe is even part of the service schedule. Anyone know the difference from the 03' to the 04'?

M1 - Wasn't asking how to do it, was more interested in how many actually inspect it? Seem to me to be more of a survey kind of thing then a How to /KV issue

It's in there though ; ).

Most that have inspected it and lived to tell the tale have found little wear. I heard of one that was deemed worn enough for replacement at 16K miles.

How about O5' or even 06' manuals? Did they (the factory) figure out that it was just not a issue or did they make an improvement on the 04' and later bikes?

I inspected mine at 16,000km as recommended...bought the replacement part because if I'm going to all that trouble, it's getting replaced whether it needs it or not (besides, if the "old" part is still in spec, it can be reused next time, right?). Also, gives you the opportunity to clean out any crud lurking inside the case, right?

Can anyone out there shed some light on why the 04 XB12R does not require the shoe be inspected and the 03XB9R does?

What about 04-05 XB9R?

Flick - Did you already purchase your shoe? Was it part number "40039-02"?

Does anyone know the part number for the 04XB12R Primary Shoe?

My 04' parts book shows 40039-02B as the adjuster assembly for both the 9 & 12. They do use a different chain and sprocket. 38teeth on the 12 vs. 30t teeth on the 9.

Daves - If you are listening. Do you know what if any difference there is between part number 40039-02B and 40039-02. Are they made of different materials that would allow the primary shoe for 04+ bikes never to need replacing. Also will that 40039-02B shoe fit on the 03 XB9R?

Obviously if it will and never needs to be replaced then that would be preferable to use it and be done once for all

I did some searching through the service manual and it gives details on replacing the adjuster, but I could not find anything that indicated a service interval for inspecting or replacing.

Call your local shop and ask if the 40039-02 has be superseded by 40039-02B. I bet that it has been and they made an improvement in materials

I recently replaced the shoe on my '03, and the material was different - a blue color instead of black. I don't have the box it came in so I can't check the part number, but the material was different than the original one. I think the B on the end of the part number means it has been revised, not sure though

I replaced mine at the 10K service.

The metal plate is thicker on the new part compared to the '03 OEM.
