Yea so my 1k service was free from the dealer , I would have done it myself cuz I don't trust other people working on my bikes, but since it had to have the tps reset I figured I would let them do it and stop being paranoid. Well my 1k was about 6 months ago , I went to change my primary oil and hmm one of the bolts was kinda loose. Didn't think to much maybe it had vibrated loose a little , well I went to tighten it back up and it would tighten just a little but would just keep spinning , I took it out and looked in and it had stripped out the threads on the cover(not the bolt).
It tightens up just enough it doesn't seem to leak at all because of it.But it pisses me off. And I know if I take it back to the dealer they will probably deny it and won't replace the cover. What do you guys think I should do?

Definitely get in touch with the dealer to give them the opportunity to make it right. Some techs use air or electric tools that just pack too much grunt for these fasteners (clutch inspection torque is 108 inch lbs; chain is only 60 inch lbs.). It should be easy for the dealer to either timesert or helicoil the hole for you, and you should be good to go from there. Let us know how you fare with the dealer.

My bike will be down an extra three weeks because of parts,really sucks.

Exact same thing happened to me!!!

The dealer stripped the threads on the primary cover for one of the bolts that holds the primary chain inspection cover. When I checked the primary chain tension the bolt and threads pulled right of the primary cover. Temporarily I held it in place with locktite (which worked very well). Those bolts are to be torqued to 40-60 IN/LBS, I suspect the dealer assumed FT/LBS and stripped the threads.

The good news is that I went to my dealer (steaming mad BTW), I asked for the service manager, I explained the situation, to my surprise he agreed to replace the Primary Cover under warranty.

I did it on mine with a torque wrench, so don't be too pissed at the dealer, it's obviously a weak point. If you do a search in the archives for time-sert thread inserts (xbolt12) you should find my old post on this subject. They are in Reno, NV and will sell direct (much cheaper than the stocking distributors). They have a kit with 5 inserts, a tap, a drill, and an insertion tool in a nice little case. Just be sure and get the drill and then tap started squarely (by hand with a small tap t-handle).

A Canadian dealer stripped my PRIMARY tranny bolt,Some Teflon tape n a little bit bigger plug n all was good. Need-less to say I wont be going to any canadian dealers any time soon.
The point is,GET A MANUAL!!!! best 55$ I've spent on my bike so far.(Dave can hook em up pretty cheap.)

Ditto Xbolt12... by the time I sold the cyclone, all four of the derby cover torx bolt holes had been "heli-coiled" and two of the primary cover holes were done as well. I always used a torque wrench on the install... it's just pretty soft aluminum (and I had that thing off a LOT).

Al Lighton had a possible theory. He said on the older motors you needed to crack each bolt and then snug it down slightly and move on to the next. The idea, as I understand it is that if you don't do that before removing the bolts the cover cocks under spring tension and when you break the next bolt loose it damages the threads. It may be that the xb motor has the same issue. I agree though that the aluminum is very soft on the primary cover (I even thought is was magnesium), and I also believe the factory recommended torque is on the high side.

Xbolt12 has a valid point....bolts can be stripped loosening them as well as tightening them. Therefore they could have been tightened from the factory and the first time they were broken loose they would have stripped no matter who did the service. I work as a tech for a local dealership, i have been a tech for 13 years and I understand that things happen sometime. Guys, even though we are techs, we are still regular people who can still make mistakes or have things happen beyond our control just like the things that can happen to you whatever you do for a living no matter how long you have been doing it or how good you are at it. What bothers me though is that how in some of your eyes, it is ok to badmouth the dealer and discern others from going to dealerships WITHOUT even contacting the dealer that did the work to see how they are willing to help you out. Notice I say how they will help instead of saying IF they will help. I say this because most of you are already expecting a negative answer when you get there and go in with an attitude and all the dealer can do is be defensive. How about this, next time, go in and calmly talk to the service manager about your concerns and it WILL be a much more pleasurable experience. I just have to say this because it is always the same story.

Nj,I agree,but I would guess most dealers will deny that they were the cause,that has been my experience.

Didn't mean to imply it was just Buell dealers,I am going thru a situation with my bike now,but don't think anyone is going to take the blame.I have seen it with cars and in my line of work.

It's amazing how far those three little points will get you. Being polite, and understanding got me 6 hours of work done for free at a local dealer. But that 6 hours got them a lifetime customer. Funny how that works out.

But if I were to go in there ranting and raving, how far would I have gotten?

Court,the 3 p's in your post ,unfortunately they don't seem to always work,some ppl just don't care.Court,when I finally get my bike back and see what the dealer that caused the problem does,I will explain the what happened and see what you think should have been done.

I will say this,I had an very good experience with Buell customer service and a not so good one.I acted like a total a## at first,I was totally frustrated at this point,but the person on the other end of the line was great.The other time ,I feel the person was very short with me.

one so far,and maybe two,I will find out soon.I know of a few ppl that have had things happen at H-D dealers and the dealer would not take responsibility.I am not trying to say it's just Buell dealers,so take it easy.

Pup, can you elaborate on your experience? You see, as I said the attitude is a big thing. The other thing is how people do not tell the truth about what is really going on. Let me give you an example. Every bike I do a jet kit on I put a dab of touch up paint on the mixture screw after it is set....NOW, say this customer comes back a week later and says the bike isn't running good and we don't know what we are doing. The first thing I do is look at the screw and see the paint broken, I ask the customer if he did anything with the bike and the response is "I didnt touch it, nobody touched it but you".....I show him the broken paint seal and the story changes dramatically. Tell me....who is fighting the larger battle here???

Nj,I am sure there are ppl who blame things on the dealer that have caused the problem themselves.I'll give you one example,I had some work done ,under factory warranty,to my transmission.Three months later I had a rattle in my primary,took it to the dealer,was told that the primary chain was to tight and the compensater bolt on the crank was loose.When i reminded them that they were the last person in there I pretty much got a "I don't know what to tell you".Now I am having a problem that will have me without my bike for about 5 weeks,the problem I am having now was caused by the tech working on it,problem is one dealer says it was like that and the other dealer says he thinks it was that dealer.There is no way what is wrong with it now was anything but an error on one of the mechanics.

The Travails of Corporal Neal D. Bradshaw - USMC



I was parked one night, on base at MCRD San Diego, with Lance Corporal Nancy Votipka and things were looking good!

At about the worst moment imaginable, I see the blue lights, look up and see two Jeeps with MP's.

"License and registration...now"

I am nervous, real nervous, as I fumble everywhere looking for the registration for the Nova. Yeah, I know I have it, I just can't find the darn thing.

I explain..."look I have a valid MRCD base sticker on the bumper, you KNOW I had to have a registration to get that".

License and Registration....NOW!" he goes off, mostly for theatrics for his comrades with arms.

I get the ticket.

Now this is where you need to listen if you are carrying a 'tude around.

I suppose Cpl. Bradshaw didn't realize I, a lowly PFC, was the Congressional Liaison for Commanding General Jespeh C. Fegan, Jr., nor that my direct report was Captain Thomas C. Hankins, a battlefield Viet Nam promotion from MGSGT that made him about the most senior office in the USMC at the time.

Worse yet, Bradshaw didn't know that one of my admin duties was filling QSN's. Quote serial numbers are when the USMC needs someone, somewhere....mostly so very cool duty (Like Embassy Duty) and MP's posts.

Cpl. Bradshaw was an MP , an MOS 5811 to you fellow Jarheads, and was prime for the picking. He had the 14 months time on station, the 24 months remaining on his current enlistment and his shots were up to date.

As I sat there and looked at the assignment I had to fill that day, for the MP slot, the nasty incident with Bradshaw slowly came back to me.

The more I checked, the more he was prime to be picked.

I wrote the orders. He'd take his leave and be on the way in 4 weeks. I placed the call to his Battalion Admin Section and had the orders signed and prepared for him to come pickup.

Two days later when he walked in the door, his eyes lit up a little and I could see he may have recalled who I was.

The moment I handed him the orders, His eyes, faces and everything lit up.

"Hope you enjoy hunting and fishing you SOB"....I quipped and walked away.

I've never been to Adak, Alaska, much less for 14 months. But, I confess it would be fun to sit there watching the sun set at 2AM and staring at the Soviet Union across the Bering Strait.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Don't be a horse's patoot.

I do not know your whole story.

In the 3 months between problems, how many miles were put on the bike.

Daves,it is in the process of being fixed now,it's just that my bike is my main transportation to and from work and its going to be down for over a month.The dealer says they will make it right if after he looks at it and he thinks it was their fault.The don't get out of hand comment wasn't directed at you or anyone else.I come here to vent,atleast I don't go to the other cycle message boards I am a member of and do it,I try to keep it in here.It's been hard this time though.
