Sure, Brankin...

I'll only be at homecoming for a day (have a charity shindig back at Kettering (GMI to you), but look forward to meeting you.

Bet that bike would do some hellish wheelies with that 12" sprocket on the back...

i think they shd package the hal's p.a. racer as a fully faired, extended w/b race replica w/ 6 spd cassette tranny, chain & all that jazz for the xb12r package .. but its now a revvy, 1348cc w. higher seat & pegs w/ dampener & ram-air inlets w/ carbon fibre body work .. charged as per ducati's in the US$13000 range .. aiming at exclusivity rather than 600cc competitor, coz it can't beat them so easy. & in price, no way hd can match the volume pricing of japs .. oh, & 5 gal. frame tank (wldn't change dimensions too much for added cap. for that thirsty motor)

the xb12s shd be as is w/ 55" w/b & 23 deg. rake - kind of a direct competitor for other naked bikes

the xb9 shd be totally naked w/ optional bodywork at time of purchase & it shd have the race kit as stock & w/ lower seat as stock
- this way each is attractive & each different enough to appeal to more buyers.

i personaly can't see why - what w/ CAD & fast prototyping - they can't get a water cooled motor happening?!

btw .. does anyone else think the fan is kinda cool when it wails away after a ride?! : )

Vansliek, you should have heard all 9 or 10 fans going at once after some of the demo rides I went on 10 days ago, it was pretty funny. I really don't mind that fan at all. I'd like to see a Firebolt with the displacement of a 12 or larger but with a stroke of a 9 or shorter that revs an extra 500-1,000 rpms. And maybe some OEM accessory full fairings and clip on risers.

Awprior, send some of those machines here to Florida. Got some work to do.

Mmelvis, trust me, I've looked into the tracks here. Sadly, distance makes that a bit of a problem. OH well, going to Deal's Gap in August.

I'm bettin' on a touring model too. The cg is too new to mess with, and the 'bolts are selling well enough. But Eric's been out of the S/T market since the S3...

Maybe they'll stick a short-stroke Sporty 883 engine in the Blast, for parts commonality with the H-D line. -NadZ

Alright, this is pure speculation and hyperbole but here it goes. I'm guessing a new engine might emerge. There is a relatively new engine design being experimented with at Texas A&M called the StarRotor http://www.starrotor.com/indexflash.htm. The characteristics that this type of engine exhibits (according to their website);
# High efficiency (44%-64%)
# Low Pollution
# Low Cost
# Low Maintenance
# Long Life
# High Power Density
# Negligible Vibration
# Multi-fuel
Seem perfectly suited for a motorcycle. Other claims are that the torque curve is almost completely flat, the power density is much higher than a standard 4-stroke engine. It's a pretty cool setup with a lot of potential. Certainly fits the motto "Different in Every Sense". I think that H-D has be monkeying around with a similar - not identical - engine since at least 2003, according to the research that I've done. Anyway, That's my wild speculation.

Skeenix- that's certainly an original thought.

I vote for a Buell adventure-tourer (ala Ducati Multistrada, Suzuki V-strom, etc.).

Surely, those pushrod tunnels on the XB engines is crying out for drive belts to run upto overhead camshafts? Don't you think? Whether it'll be '06 or later, who knows, but surely the XB engine is a "work in progress". Not much doubt about that eh?

Steve- you know, that's exactly what I thought they'd done the first time I saw a Blast. I hadn't looked at Harleys (or Buells for that matter) in several years, and went in the HD shop in Marietta, GA tagging along with some co-workers. There was a new Blast on display (it was probably right after they'd been introduced) and I thought "Cool, 1/2 a Sportster engine with OHC. What a neat engine." It was only after I read about the XB's that I found out they weren't OHC belt drive housings.

I like the thought of dual overhead cams but that would make the motor itself very tall. And if that were to happen, see ya later underslung muffler! All that extra weight down there really low helps the stability of this bike with it's already short wheelbase and aggressive geometry. Good thought though. Plus we've yet to comment on a HUGE aspect here. Brand recognition. Harley being a large contributor to this brand spells one type of motor to me. Exactly what we have. Not that advancements can't be made! *wink wink*

Kowpow, what about the V-Rod, new engine design getting away from the 45 degree vtwin. The rumors I heard were 70 degree twin, DOHC, and liquid cooled. If this is the case, I wonder of they have a redesigned chassis in the works. Not that the XB needs a new chassis. I guess we will just have to wait til July

It's not the valve train that limits the RPM. It's piston speed.

"I wonder of they have a redesigned chassis in the works."

Not likely for a while. They have the sweetest chassis in the world. I think they'll spend R&D money on the engine for a while : ).

I'm thinking four valve heads, bigger pistons, nine stroke, Another few hundred RPM's.

If it's an engine...

To tap into the vast "Damn Hippie" market, I think Buell will unveil the 150 mpg Hybrid Edition XB. It will be painted "Cherry Garcia" and have a Woven Hemp Final Drive Belt, with an integral Bong Holder molded into the tank cover. A year's membership to "Greenpeace" is included in the purchase price. Baby seals will no longer be clubbed in the manufacturing process of the newest Buell. ; )

But would you still buy one if it had a Rotax motor in it ?

How 'bout a water-cooled DOHC 990cc V5 ? Man, just imagine it !

Just rode my buddy Gerry's Aprilia Mille this afternoon.
I have to agree with Anonymous, and NJ, this motor in the XB frame would be sweetness itself.
Some scallywag had previously started a unofficially non-denied rumor on this very board that the Rotax might be the next motor for the XB as Harley already uses one Rotax engine. Matt from Trojan stated that Aprilia might develop their own engine, leaving the Rotax looking for a home.
The motor is extremely smooth, sweet power delivery, lots of grunt, and it still retains some Vee Twin characteristics, if in a more subtle way than our beloved Buell 45º motor.

Hello HAck99,
Keep the posts coming in , However that one is old news .. I think BUddy there just likes to Sound Off Don`t think you will ever see that happened...Myself for One will never buy a buell if it does not HAVE a true Harley Davidson Old School style HD. Engine and A v-rod does not fit into that as far as I`m concern...

"Total Motorcycle interviewed Tom Wild, Assistant General Manager for Calgary Harley-Davidson on January 8th at the 2005 Calgary Motorcycle Show - As for secrets, I can let out that we are going to be using the Harley-Davidson V-Rod engine for a Buell model this year"

This BS has been floating around the web since January and that "nipnode" should be HUNG for saying it.

DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY BELIEVE that an HD employee would be allowed to say something like that ???

These guys are sworn to secrecy and do a pretty darned good job of it too. So we're supposed to believe that some mid-level manager in Canada has been given permission to "spill the beans".

I THINK NOT !!!

Good rumors yes, "swill" like this is best left in the trash heap.
