Drop the bike??? Why would anyone drop their bike? As long as you have your head screwed on straight you will be just fine with a XB9. You don't have to be a new rider to be an idiot...

I started on a "beginner" bike. It was OK in terms of drops (1 in 20k miles, I was lucky), but all in all, it was just crappy brakes, crappy suspension, in addition to crappy performance. Any safety perk I got from the low power was more then consumed by crappy brakes, suspension, and tires. That is one thing the Blast did right, the brakes and handling are much better then a "starter bike" ought to be.

I have an '02 Blast. This is my fourth motorcycle w/ my last being a Kawasaki ZX7R. Even though I have some riding experience I love this bike. Sure, I lust after the XBs when I've ridden w/ some of the other guys here in Georgia but given their economy of accessories and maintenance, the Blasts are a very good value. When I ride the "little" Buell, I still get looks and questions to what and who makes it, even beside more expensive makes and models.

Also, a bike with less power usually forces the rider to become a better technician, i.e. cornerer, utilizing the transmission and the brakes to the most of their ability.

Pup - a lot more! - lol - XB's are more for everything - lol - also pup check out the introduction of the XB out in Tollido Spain - beat that 600 by several tenths of a second - higher top end yes, but the Buell beat it on the track in its debute - so rethink that also - lol - a bike to learn on and enjoy the learning experience is not a XB or SS/RR type bike - it is foolish to think so or recomend - you can learn on anything, but you'll learn more on a smaller, more forgiving bike. Accidents are more likely to happen on the larger bikes - fact.

EZ that would be the first race an XB won,XB don't even bother to race in AMA events, except FX,I wonder why that is,they get their butts kicked. You bring up one race,I would like to see the details of that race.

It wasn't a race - it was best lap times on a track during time runs - a pure test of what bike could do the best time around the track. The XB debuted in Spain. It is mentioned in several different old mags outlining the event, on line as well - you should research the bike you buy - you'll feel better about it in the end. The XB's have had very good reviews consistantly with the only niggles being the tranny and the old US cry - more power - lol

Buell's don't race most AMA classes because of displacement limitations not because...

they get their butts kicked

Buy whichever bike draws you to it. Don't settle.

If you settle for a so-called "starter bike" then one day someone will blow by you on the bike you really wanted,
the one you should have bought in the first place, and you might stare at it too long and crash.

Mike.

what's so funny,I don't see a problem with a XB as a first bike.Plenty of ppl buy small bikes to start and have problems, and plenty of ppl buy big bikes and have no problems. This argument could go on for ever, you like Blasts,so of course you recommend them,I know I wouldn't want to be on a highway with one and need power to get out of the way of something,a stock Blast couldn't get out of it's own way on the highway.neverending argument

Only you have the right answers,EZ.Everyone should by a small bike to start on,no questions asked.I sure wish I would have bought a small bike first, then after a week i would have been saying to myself"Man,why did I buy this POS",glad i bought what I wanted from the start. But what do I know 20,000 miles in 14 months

LOL - I think everyone here would disagree with that - too funny - I'm not looking to argue with you - those opinions are not mine - though I agree with them, but the voice of experts - I know you can learn on anything, but the only reason I bring up that point is the fact that you learn better and more on a smaller bike - a great majority of pro's started small as well - your showing childishness though by insisting that starting on a bigger bike - especially an XB/SS/RR type bike will be as easy as starting on a smaller bike - if that was true almost all MSF classes would have cheap used large bikes available to learn on as well - not the case in reality - you really should research the subject - there is a lot more to it than even I first thought about when we had this debate on the Quick Board - as for that clever retort - well I just had to laugh...you too funny

On a seperate note - the Blast does just fine - with a top speed of 95 stock controlled by the ignition - lol - I will not defend a bike that has a longer sucessfull sales history and higher dependability rating - it needs no defending - only thing you've proved to me is that you don't know about your bike or its history or its creator's history - you definately a pup - lol

I am not saying everyone can learn on a bigger bike, but it is not a problem for some, and you keep putting XB's in the same class /RR bikes ,and this just isn't the case.Lets look at some numbers.SV650,considered a good beginners bike by most 1/4 mile 12.02@108.9,XB9 11.84@112.5,Suzuki GS500{01}13.65@95.5,Ninja 500 12.81@101.2,The GS500 is pretty far behind but the others are pretty close and they are considered good beginners bike.GSXR600 10.58@130.5,Ninja600 10.87@128.42,so is the XB9 closer to a beginners bike or a RR/SS bike

I'm with thepup on this one. Compared to the direct competition that is available out there,
a stock XB is not really a "big bike".

Also, the XB is a marvel of engineering. Why wouldn't you want your first bike to be the best handling, best braking, responsive, highly reliable, and actually built for the street sportbike out there??

Every review of the Blast talk about the performance of the Blast on a highway. They say above 70 there just isn't much there. Now how did I prove I know nothing about my bike or Buell history,I understand you have Buell colored glasses on ,but please be realistic. If your Blast is so great, why are you working so hard to change it and make it faster. You can try to talk down to me all you want, facts are still facts.i guess good hard numbers mean nothing to you though, the Blast is the best motorcycle ever created.

You tripping - the Blast is a great bike and numbers have nothing to do with it or the XB - if it wasn't for the XB you wouldn't even know how to spell Buell - let alone know who and what they are. You just a Johney come lately talking - go buy a Gixxer if numbers mean so much - fool!

But It aint no wussy bike either, mine will pull my arms off if I'm not careful. Would you throw your keys to a rookie ?

That would be like giving a 16 year old the keys to a 400hp Vette. you gotta learn first!

I started riding as a bloody newbie in June last year. I took the MSF class at the local community college and bought a brandnew Blast. In the beginning, even this small bike scared me once in a while and I did drop it a few times (nothing major though). Since then, I put about 8,000 miles on it, and feel very comfortable with it. Next spring I'm getting my XB9R (thanks Dave), and I would not have done it earlier than that. The Blast is a great (beginner) bike, I agree with EZ. I'd keep it if my finances permitted. I rode it from RI to VT and back three times - 280 miles one way, all Interstate. It easily does 75-80 mph on the Interstate, no problems or "lack of performance" there. No, it cannot keep up with my boyfriend's XB9R, but then again it would be no starter bike if it could.

As EZ recommended - check out www.beginnerbikes.com. Seriously.

Just my two cents.

I'm not frustraited and I'm not even ticked - each person has a view - however, if someone where to tell me they bought an XB or a 600RR as a first bike - I'd reply park it and get a beater and beat on it for a while - I'm not pushing the Blast - I'm pushing a safer, easier, more fun/relaxing form of learning - when bikes reach a certain level they become much more unforgiving and those numbers don't tell that truth - thats all - I'll have an XB soon enough I figure, and if I'm lucky an S1W - Thats where I stand - you can learn on anything, but why not keep the process easy, fun and practically free - since the beater can usually be sold for close to the price you paid for it and the riding experience / education - priceless. Thats all I'm peddling - your first bike will not be your last!

Not really,more like a cavalier Z24.

My point exactly.

I would not hand my keys over to a 16 year old or to you or anyone else because I have my own money invested in it. If I was a salesman and he had a motorcycle endorsement on his license, then I would hand him the keys, unless he was an obviously retarded squid.

And Ezblast, what's with the Vader obsession?

Wow, such a spirited debate!
I agree with EZ.
A smaller less expensive bike to learn on just makes sense. Is this the only way to go? No, obviously not, there are people on this board that started off on all sizes of bikes. I like the "Would you hand you keys over to a newbie rider?" question.
I know this girl that rides with us. She started out on a Blast. Believe me when I say she rides with us. Granted we don't ride the interstates if we can get out of it, but when we do she's right there with us. In the mountains when she's with us, she ain't last in the group, and she ain't holdin' no body up either! She now has an XB9R and her Blast.
Good rider she is; )
And another thing, never, ever, fault a man for hot rodding his bike. I'd bet my last dollar, if EZ owned the most powerful Buell in the world, he'd find a way to tweek another HP or two out of it. If you take a little time to learn about EZ and his bikes, you'd not have said what you did.
I'm looking to buy a retired Rider's Edge Blast, and I've been riding for over 30 years on all kinds and sizes of bikes. EZ and the Thumper Forum will be a great source of information when I get started.
