Somethings not right,if i hold the rpms at 3000 while its idleing after about 5 seconds itll dip down to about 1000 rpms.
When im riding slow at about 20-25 mph (also at about 3000-3500 rpms it like chugs like its about to die.
Not lugging but like its not getting gas or its missing a spark or sumthin.
Could this be fouled plugs? or did i just when i adjusted my throttle cables?
Also at the 5000 mile service there supposed to change the spark plugs right? Well they didnt because i cant get my seat off cuz of a stripped threadsert

At 5k miles the manual calls to inspect the plugs, at 10k is when you change them.

I changed my plugs out at 5k for my own reasons (been running a mix of race gas, race+pump gas, and pump gas) and found that there wasnt much wrong with them. They had a darker color with a bit of a powdery coat (believe the SM said this was due to a lean/hot condition).

My bike exhibits the surge/die kind of behaviour you describe. I notice it at all rmp ranges if I hold the throttle steady. To me it appears to be more related to lack of air as opposed to lack of fuel.

After whackin' it a few times and running for a while the symptoms still exist. The bike has done this since the day I removed the snorkel (at least that is when I began to notice it) and I have discounted the engine behavior as normal and I dont pay much attention to it.

mine didnt start doing it until YESTERDAY
after i adjusted my throttle cables
but im thinking its the plugs because it was running lean for a LONG time (k&n filter D&D exhaust) but they didnt even inspect my plugs cuz like i said u cant get the seat off
or i just adjusted my throttle wrong ( it has absolutely no play in it now ) cuz we was just kinda winging it fiddling with the washer lock things at the cable itself

420-
Try to get the throtle adjustment back to like stock conditions and see if it continues.

I work in the computer industry, and I noticed that problems always crop up after folks make adjustments. May give that a whirl and see what you come up with.

Sounds like to throttle position sensor needs to be reset. Has the Battery been disconnected lately?

My new XB12 does the same thing...runs rough at any steady speed when the rpms are at or under 3000. It only has 120 miles on it and am trying to break in by the book but i am finding it difficult to keep it under 3000 rpms. Does this sound normal? How important is it to keep it under 3500 rpms during the 500 mile break in period?

vary your RPM but try not to put a load on it.

dealers tell people not to rev past such and such RPM or such a speed to insure that people arent flogging new bikes. its not so much of rpm limit, just be light on the throttle and vary the rpm.

on the other hand, some people swear by breaking them in WFO, so....

JRR, it's easy to ride smooth under 3000rpm AFTER the engine is run in, the Factory break-in makes no sense to me at all. I purposely flogged my bike during the first 50 miles to see what would happen, after that I rode it like a broken in bike, but I didn't abuse it and didn't give it WOT if it didn't feel like it wanted to go there. 7 months later with over 5000 miles it uses hardly any oil and goes like the clappers. This is the 1st bike I have broken in hard.
Worst thing I think you can do to a Buell/HD is lug it, so I refused to ride mine under 3000 rpm until it was broken in, especially when taking off in 1st.
Why would I care about warranty? Was I silly enough to buy a new bike that I expected to blow up?
Do I take risks? Yes.
Why do I take the bike on the occasional 4WD dirt road? Cause it handles it.
Will the belt catch a stone and leave me stranded? I dunno I'll find out one day, but will not even think about avoiding dirt roads unless and if that ever happens.
Why do I ride a Buell? Cause it does what I want it to do and goes where I want better than I ever imagined.
Why did I write this? I think I lost the plot : )

Opto.
I like your attitude!!
I agree 100% about not riding under 3000 rpm during break-in. The factory break-in does not make sense to me either. My XB did not sound or feel right when I started to follow it initially. In fact it sounded like it was doing engine damage. So I ignored the recommended procedure and just varied rpms and changed the oil a couple times. The bike just doesn't burn oil and it runs just fine.
Mike.

Replace the spark plug/ignition wires, then the plugs... my guess is a craked plug or an intermittent "open" on one of the wires....

Service manual say to remove the airbox and baseplate because you need to be able to see the throttle plate. It's in step #7.

Page 1-43, Step #7:
"Twist and release throttle control grip a few times.
Throttle plate must return to idle position each time throttle grip is released. If this is not the case,....."

Mike.
