Anyone notice difference between the 03 and 04 rear brake? I have been noticing during my short ride (about a month before the cold front) that my 03 XB rear brake is relatively weak. Changing the front pulley with the rear brake engaged (using the belt to hold the pulley) confirmed how weak it is. I could easily rotate the rear wheel even when braked really hard - using only a foot long leverage (rachet). I guess it may have been designed that way to prevent rear lock. O3's use a single piston, whereas 04's use two pistons. My question is: 1. Does an 04 rear brake provide better stopping power? 2. Can an 04 rear brake be installed w/o any mods (namely using existing rotor)? 3. Brian, Dave how much does OEM 04 rear brake cost? 4. Any other direct replacement brakes? |

Brembo makes a replacement rear caliper for the XB. I think Trojan shows it on their website. |

DC check the rear pads. maybe dirty/glazed. clean with alcohol, scritch up with some 220 grit. see if that helps a bunch |

I think just changing/roughing the pads will increase your rear brake grip quite a bit. I use my rear a lot and it has degraded noticeably since I got the bike ('03 XB9R) 15k miles ago. I've got new pads to install on it when I get home that I fully expect to restore the rear braking power. BTW, even in it's 'weakened' state, my rear brake can still lock the wheel pretty easily. |

Full... Well... most everything else of what very little I have had to do or have done has been very cheap. Even with the stuff coming from europe as a source. The hook is the ABS brake system... it adds between $1500 and $2000 to the price of the bike. Translated... ABS means EXPENSIVE SH*T. I bought the bike used with 20k on it and was told the engine was at this point really is just now broke in. I also got the bike for about $1500 under market... and the rotor was messed up when I got it... as in pads not replaced in a timely manner... meaning scared up rotor! So... I guess i really can't or shouldn't bitch. AND... the BMWs will last for 100k miles and WAY beyond... but I am not looking forward to the $400.00 brake job when I get it done. OH well... I am spoiled by the XB... and the BMW sees little road time. |

I was looking at them the other day. There are at least 2 other brands available but i can't remember who right now(I'm at home and don't have my complete library of parts books) I think it was DP and EBC I will check when I get to work. WELL i JUST CAUGHT ALL THIS STUFF. Just to put my scewed up thinking into the mix. but the 03 caliper uses 2 pistons just like the 04 in fact the 03 and 04 pistons are the same exact same part number. the rear rotor has the same part number not superceded or anything.usualy means the exact same part. I measured it also and it was a hair smaller than the 03. now this wasn't accurate maesauring at all. tape measurer on the bike its self. the pads are the same as 03 also. yes the caliper has a superceded part number so something is different there could be the finish for all we know. I will call them later today to find out. the carrier is the same as 03 also. so heres my thinking. the only thing different is the caliper itself.and as I said could just be finish. the 2 pistons in side the caliper are the same. Yes the rear brake is a lil weak but you may have fluid issues or dirty pads or maybe some sorta of oily fluid contaminated the pads. and yes if you were changing the front pully using a foot long leverage rod you probably could have turned the rear wheel. thats why that pulley stop special tool is made to do that job. but I will check here today and let you know what is different. not trying to be a bastard here. just thinking theres no real difference in the brakes themselves. there colud be other issues ok I just got off the phone the changes in 04 and 03 is cosmetic. it was a different casting and a different metal on the pistons. and these are not performance upgrades. but like ya'll are thinking different pads make a huge difference. A buddy of mine put ebc double HH pads on the front of his xb9 and he said they were much grabbier and less fade on the track.

They must have changed their minds after the brochures were printed! 03 Brochure says, Rear brake, single piston caliper,230mm rotor 04 Brochure says, Rear brake, dual piston caliper, 240mm rotor I guess that will teach me to look at the brochures! Sorry. Good thing we have Bubba, ex Buell tech, now Buell salesman to watch out for dumb things I do! I just sell them I don't work on em! Now I am curious as to why either the brochures are wrong or why a different diameter rotor would both have the same part # I looked at the carrier and it appears to be different but has the same part number? let me stand corrected on a termnology thing here and even more explantion to this crap..and I am not trying to step on any toes(dave) I use the terminolgy as dual or single piston caliper as to how many total pistons there are ...like the front I call a 6 piston ( its really 3) dual (is really single piston. so the rear is a single piston caliper on both 03 and 04.... the reason as dave said that the brochure says that is because it does. but what happens is this....it was probably planned to become a dual piston caliper with a bigger rotor...obviously the suppliers didn't come thru and they stuck with the single piston rear calipers. Print time for the brochures are way ahead of production. so the catalogs are misprinted. I just got off of the phone with tech services to verify this stuff...sorry for all the confusion its early and my head is bleeding because I just rammed it into something on my way to the computer......friggin damn computers are dangerous. |

OK... let me throw a monkey wrench into this!!! the rotor is $47.38??? how much is an adapter plate so that $47.00 rotor will work on my BMW R1100RA??? If it totals less than $300.00 I win!! When they say it has ABS brakes... Does BMW mean the components are made out of ABS plastic... If that is true... can I use components made out of CPVC plastic??? ...and if it is a V-twin... doesn't that mean it has two pistons... so my BMW is a flat twin... so it has two pistons... so... the brake components will interchange??? Right??? OK... who looks stupid now??? ...and I don't have to apply myself do to this... ask any one in the KC Mob! BTW My sweetie is from Iowa... I have the bruises to prove I know not to speak ill of Iowa!!! |

Das...ABS= "Antilock Brake System" Not sure how the BMW system works but if it is like a car there is a "tone ring" cut into the rotor that a sensor reads. Its that fine machining that boosts the cost on the ABS rotor. Now that tone ring could also just be well spaced magnets or little raised dashes or something similar. The older ABS systems simply had a dump valve so when you grabbed a fistful of brake it would bleed the sudden spike to keep the brake from locking. The newer systems actually have a computer to tell it when to "pulse" the pressure to keep it from locking. IIRC the BMW systems are the most advanced but on that I could be very wrong. |

All parts discussion aside, we all have to remember which disc actually holds all of the stopping power on our wonderful little machines. 70% to the front. 30% to the rear. I don't know about all of you, but I love my ZTL brake. That thing can stop me on a dime every time. I guess my reasoning is that, I think I would prefer to have a weaker rear brake than a weak front brake. Strong rear brakes would lead to more of a problem with skidding. Hence, greater probability of an accident. That is how I had my first 2 wheeler accident. The guy behind me had his rear lock up on him and he slid into me. He's lucky I didn't have the XB yet, the penalty would have to be death!! Just my $ .02. Rich |
