Get a stock ECM and tune it or buy the tuning software for the E B R computer. Tuner Pro RT suggests they can work with that ECM, but you would need to do some research into to see if it can talk correctly to that ECM.

Do you have the high pressure regulator on the fuel pump?

This engine is almost un-tuneable without it.

450 KPA (KiloPascals) is about double the pressure in the "street" pressure regulator

Slaughter,

Is this another toy price to look for? Would this be on the inside or outside of the pump? Would a needle gauge let me know without tearing into it? Right now the tank has a fresh fill of 93. If it wasn't so heavy I'd just flip it over and shake it some.

Engine ran fine the first year I had it running...just that little retaining ring issue.

I have the early RACE ONLY ECM that came with a COM box, cable (9 pin into 4), floppy with software from Kimball. 2003 date. I'll need a serial ported XP or less PC to see into the ECM and gather more info. I've been chatting with the cat that bought Kimball and remade the software and now programs all factory Buells. He's going to help with the mapping and tuning. Previous owner/rider still had all this Kimball software and cords left in his attic. Way cool.

Stock ECM gave me one pop then gave up. I'll try to see it with ECMSpy and do the TPS reset. Still no heartbeat or sinus rhythm.

I'll be home trying to make something happen tomorrow......2 months till snow.

If it ran fine, then it probably had the HP fuel regulator already. If you see a parts breakdown of the pump assembly, it's on the innermost end and snaps in place (but should be safety-wired)

I would offer to email my fuel maps - but I'm running 1.9 inch intakes... so might be weird.

You'd have to hook up a fuel pressure gage in line between the supply fuel line and throttle body and fire it up. It'll measure fuel pressure while it's running... but it's not something that you'd want to invest in. Problem is the "official" pressure gage has Buell fuel fittings, all adapters and connectors for all other Hardley lines too. Just doesn't really sound like it's pressure (I didn't know if you'd changed pump assemblies or not)

Hey Steve, Wow ! you're having a hell of a time with that bike. I haven't been on here in a while as I can't seem to log off and go to sleep (it's 211 am now) so I just went cold turkey with the BW. I don't remember exactly what I got from you but if I can help let me know.

When all is said and done and the boys get your bike runnin' right let me know if you have any goodies you are looking to part with, I'm always looking.

Did the pictures I sent you help at all ?

ECMSpy questions....

I have version 1.12.26 bought off Ebay a year ago. Laptops are running Vista with user account control off. FTDI driver is dated 3/18/2011 V2.8.14.0. THe COM port opens but any inquiry errors Transmission Timed out! and gives a time. Dials have not moved, TPS is not restting, diagnostics advance with a green bar to about 40% then stop. I can't get a map or get anything to budge from the opening default 'dash board'.

What do I need to do to get this factory ECM to chat w/ ECMSPy? Do I have a good copy? Do I need to register it? Do I need to put on some funnny clothes and dance around the garage? It's going to get set on fire soon at the end of driveway real soon.

Bike left the factory as a '04 Lighning and then was morphed into a CCS/Daytona USA racer. Factory ECM is back in the bike and it she still will not start. I do not have a O2 sensor hooked up as yet nor does my exhaust have a bung for one.

I wish I knew how to play with these 'lektroniks, if I did I would take a ride with some of my stuff and see if any of it will work for you. Can you post a picture of any and all ECM's you have ? I know of at least one occasion where the plug for the timing trigger was plugged in to the wrong plug, I don't remember what plug it was or if the harness was stock but it can't hurt to check. The guy who switched plugs was going crazy untill he figured it out.

I have some pics to add.

Circa 2003'ish RACE USE ONLY ECM with Screaming Eagle cord, COM box and floppy with Kimball manual. No software on it.

Race Use Only ECM.

Next is the unlabeled ECM.

Next is the cord end up close.

Any help would appreciated. I'm waiting on Tim at idspd.com to get back to me how to run the Kimball software and talk to the race ecm. I can't communicate with the unlabeled one either. Odd they are both the same number ...496.

All I'm trying to do is get her running again. A TPS Reset will get that done. The RACE USE ECM will almost start at half throttle. The unmarked one gives the motor no life at all.

2 1/2 quarts of fresh AmsOil, 2 new Michelin Pilot Road 2s and a lot of valve train parts. I even went out and got a used laptop with XP on it and a serial port to try and get this to work.

Any one...?

I don't think that the "race use only" ECM is the ""real"" race ECM. Buell had a race kit that contained the race muffler, K&N air filter (I think) and an ECM that was tweaked a bit to fatten up the fuelling. It was never meant to be fiddled with and isn't supposed to "talk" with anything.

The "real" race ECM was a $750 piece of equipment that was infinately programable and designed for serious racers that could tune and re-tune it with a dyno for different fuels and atmospheric conditions.

I have taken a few pictures of two of my ECM's and will send them to your phone.

Nope.
"Race use only" ECUs were and still are available individually to the public.
They don't comply to EPA regs.

You can "talk" to them via the normal methods.
My X1 has had one under the seat since new.
This winter, I will get a Race brain for my ULY.

The original 03 Race ECM was the same hardware as the stock 03 ECM with the different maps. The sticker "for race use only" was to satisfy the EPA.

I got an original RACE ECM - fully programmable for my 03. It is a DOS-based program written by Kimball (later bought by IDS)

I can email you my maps. I'd bet you would get a response from IDS on the software.

Been about 6 years since I've run it - but connecting and doing TPS resets is pretty easy. Tuning was pretty difficult since you couldn't move around easily within the program.

Tim sent an executable to quiz the ECM's Version and dates. Both are Race ECMs and reply the same Version and build/born date. Tried 'em both for kicks and giggles. Different numbers on the engine management page for each ECM that I don't understand as yet.

As this progresses I can offer some screen pics if permitted. I know the Kimball Manual had lots of don't copy, share, pass down to kin, let blow away in the wind warnings on it. Really ; )

So no factory ECMs in sight so far.

OK..ECM knowledge. There are three XB ECMs out there. 1. The factory ECM with stock mapping sold to you on your VIN numbered motorcycle.
2. The ECM sold with your Race kit that had the double outlet exhaust, ECM and K &N filter. Both of these are Dealer friendly and ECMSpy/USB port friendly.
3. The two I have and now sold through Erik Buell Racing are ONLY compatible with a serial port 5V COM box interface and idspd.com/Erik Buell Racing software.

Slaughter...you're right.

It's looking up...looking up!

Advice I can offer the followers here is do not disconnect the ECM!!! It looses the TPS setting and may require a reset. Write this in your service manual somewhere.

She lives!!

TPS reset was key keeping the TBI from becoming my backup BBQ. Timing was also off. Had to be advanced, CW, to start. Different than last years mark. After first ride in 11 months timimg is still a tad off. Labored acceleration until 3000 rpm where it becomes healthy without any throttle help. Erik Buell Racing software will set that just like the dealer does. Seems like it's running a tad hot too. Have to sort that out and verify with the rear cylinder temp guage.

Thanks for the help from everyone!! Huge shout out to Kevin Drum for helping during the wrenching and cam set-up. I'm in your debt. Any time you need some help...call.

Second big shout out to Tim Blomenberg at idpspd.com where Erik Buell Racing software, COM boxes and cables are born and bundled. Couldn't have got her running without the missing software and the blow by blow how-to. Stand up kind of guy that spends his Sunday mornings where one should.

Last big shout out goes to this WebBoard for all it does and stands for. For all the wrenchers, shade tree, shed and dealer mechanics out there....keep up the great work and keep 'em running.

I love Buells.

TPS Reset...Done
Static Timing...Done.

Next issue is getting full fuel numbers past an 80% throttle twist.. Again, these ECMs are the race Erik Buell Racing models. Attached is the 1169cc map I pulled off the ECM that was tuned for the 1169cc motor . I can watch the numbers fall off past the 80% throttle twist in both ECMs. It's done this since I've had and and now the Kimball software confirms it.

Other ECM had a base 1348cc calibration map. Too rich for an 1169cc.

Giving her full throttle makes her sound a lot like a dying farm animal. Also...kinda like buying the rag top instead of the hardtop only to later find out you were speed limited to 135mph by the factory.

Can any racers/tuners offer a hand with this retired CCS/Daytona bike?

I can get all my fuel maps loaded into my old DOS/Kimball and email it to you as a text file. SHOULD work (once static timing is for sure properly set)

Still sitting in terminal in DFW but should be able to get to it on Monday at latest and also tell you which wires are used for static timing (if I recall, they are called out in maintenance manual).

I have a few maps from the old dos/PCM system in a file in the backup drive I can resurrect.

I didn't read everything. Therefore, Pm me the details on the bike and I can put my knoggan thoughts together and make you a test map to try from old data in my cranium.
I'll base it from the collection of data I have currently in the PCM files I have worked with and others.

Just let me know which software base you need it in so I can convert the file to that system.

Mike
