Yesterday I went out to ride my 2008 XB12R. It was about a week since I rode it last. I went to start it up and everything seemed normal. The fuel pump primed and everything. However, the starter only clicked. I was pissed. When I went into the garage, the bike was still plugged into the battery maintainer. I always keep it plugged in. Last year I bought a new battery and had the stator replaced. "WTF" I thought.

So I plugged the bike back into the charger and the green light was lit, meaning a full charge. So I thought this must be a bad wire contact issue. I took off the battery cables and cleaned them all up. They weren’t too dirty. I put everything back together and tried to start it again. Click, click, click went the starter. Then I moved to the starter connections. I took off the belt cover. Trying to get my XL glove sized fingers into the cables was starting to piss me off. I said a lot of words that would be bleeped by the FCC.

My day was already going, well let's just say not according to plan. I decided to not work on it any more. Then I walked outside and thought "I'll just jump it with my Jeep." I hooked it up and it started right away. It didn't make any sense at all. So I thought that my battery maintainer must be bad. I went over and picked it up and noticed that it was set to 6 volts. Over the week of not riding, it drained my battery to an acceptable 6 volts.

I put it back to 12 volts and let it charge over night. The bike ran great today.

I still feel stupid. I owe it new oil tomorrow.

I agree with L&L. I just put some new "blood" in mine (winter viscosity) and am getting ready to flog as we type.

Test ride in t-minus 2 minutes!

I've had the same thing happen w/ my batter maintainers. It's PRETTY annoying! The newer tenders I've purchased don't have the manual voltage selection anymore, thankfully...
