Has anyone on here welded their seat rails to the center tail section? Any problems arise with spacing? Pics? |

I'm confused...but still interested. Could someone explain to the non-welders in the group? I could explain but I would probably do it as well as I can weld, BADLY! Seriously -- I'm great with a plasma cutter or a grinder or anything like that but my welds are crud. I'm so ashamed! |

Lot's of confusion, and I'm not sure why...he wants to weld the side rails to the tailpiece and smooth them out. Wants to see if anyone has done it. I think it's a great idea aesthetically, but I question the ability of that crappy aluminum to be welded nicely and smoothly. Plus I have a fiberglass tailpiece, so no-can-do! When riding season is over, I am having my rails powdercoated and painting the tailpiece to match, but now you've got me thinking about welding up the tail and cleaning it up....damnu! |

Sorry for the confusion. Most of the mods you can do on these bikes are bolt on, except for the chopping of the cheesegrater. I think its great that the aftermarket is so awesome for the XB, but what about custom mods on these bikes? These bikes have been engineered so well that there is not much that you would want to modify. So I've been thinking of small things that would set my bike apart from others, even it they are subtle and will not be noticed by anybody other than a Buell enthusiast. The first mod that came to mind was welding the sub-frame together, creating a continuous rail around the seat, eliminating those awful seams that don't line up at all! And yes Andy, the cast aluminum is not the easiest to weld, it may turn into a puddle as soon as the arc touches it, this is where my questions for people that have done it come in. I swear I have seen an Xb with this done on here, or they just photoshopped the seams out. If it is possible to welded with no bondo, and have it powdercoated, how badass would that be. |

Welding isn't going to do it. I got a feeling you're going to need an alloy to Braze this, especially if the rails and the tail are dissimilar metals. Aluminum is a touchy deal. |

Cast aluminum isn't like cast iron. It welds quite well as long as there are no voids which would be hard to have anyway. I'd suggest using a foot pedal controlled heli-arc. Don't forget to match your alloys. Oh yea, and heat area up first. That makes a huge difference. (Message edited by od54 on September 11, 2008) |

How 'bout some JB weld? I mean those parts are probably stable. You just want to fill in the cracks. |

I don't trust JB weld, although it might do the job if you left the four bolts holding the tail and rails together. Is Jb Weld powder coat-able anyways? |

JB Weld doesn't powdercoat well. I had some done on a triple tree and it bubbled. From a couple feet away it isn't noticeable, but you can see it when you get closer. |

I think there is a set of seat rails for sale in the parts section and plenty of people have the cheese grater. so why dont you try it out on parts taht are not attached to your bike. not attached , rather not needed to run your bike. less down time . this is coming out wrong. I am going to stop now. really i am. |
