so i was riding along and all of a sudden my bike became a sh*t load louder, i ride a little further to find a place to stop. then i look underneath of the bike and see that my jardine muffler has actually broken into two pieces, where it is held together in the front with the rivets it came apart and was hanging in the muffler mount scraping against my back tire. the reason i retell this story is to see if this has happened to anyone else? and to see what they had done about it.

A Jardine needs to be repacked regularly. Once the packing burns down the big power pulses of the Buell motor will loosen and blow the rivets out of the can quite easily. You have to remember this pipe was designed for an inline four not a 45 degree air cooled twin with a single pin crank. Just repack it and install new rivets regularly and you'll be good to go.

+1 on the check and repack.

On a jardine muffler, they tell you when they need repacked. The rivets start to loosen. As soon as this is noticed, it's time for a repack. Most people get 5000-8000 miles before a repack is required.

Why don't they weld instead of using rivets? Seems like so many stories of cans falling apart would be bad for business...?

The welds would break too, and it would make it that much harder to repack the can. Rivets are extremely easy to drill out and put back, so that is why it is done that way. I was pissed the first time mine fell apart, but once I knew that it was supposed to be repacked I took it for what it was. It is a great pipe for the money when you consider that it costs half or less than every other pipe available for the Buells. I think the repack kit is about $50 from Jardine, so it would take 5 repacks before it cost about the same as other available pipes. In other words it is going to take 25,000 to 40,000 miles of use to cost the same amount.

Not to bad of a deal if you ask me since most bikes never get that many miles put on them.

It has happened to some people. I am not one of them. You should use rivets, but dont use aluminum rivets which are simple to find and a dime a dozen. USE STAINLESS, much stronger and will resist the blow outs. They are just as easy to work with also, but do cost a tad more.

Well, after the shootout it might make more sense for 12 riders to migrate to SpecOps and Drummers since those show better results. I can see doing the repacking and such for an optimum muffler but since Jardines are more a 9 pipe...

On the other hand, some people like parts that need to be tinkered with, so each to their own.

well thanks for the advice, i knew i was going to have to repack it soon anyway, kinda glad it happened the other afternoon considering that i was going to make a long trip this weekend and that would have sucked for it to blow out in the first bit of a 1000+ mile weekend... not tryin to ride open headers for any extended period of time, would be deaf as a result. kinda interesting that i got to experience the open header aspect of it, riding around a watching people cover their ears when i pass... i got a kick out of that.
so i guess the plan is to order the repack and get some stainless rivets (thanks for the advice) and keep on truckin.
and i only had like 4k-4.5k miles on it so i wasnt exactly expecting to have to repack it quite yet... but oh well shit happens for a reason.

I used 3/16" Diameter x 1/4" grip Stainless Rivets.
From memory they were just slightly bigger in diameter.
