How do you know iif the belt is too tight? I have done the new 06 belt on my 05scg. When I put it on it was tiggght!.

I know they stretch/settle in. But what if a belt was too tight? How would you know?

Now I have a loud whirrrrig sound I can hear. That is mentaly driving me crazy. I am afraid I might burn up something in the motor.

If I were to put back on the old belt. Does it matter the direction it turned on before I took it off? I am a little weary of putting my old one on now because like a dummy I didnt mark the direction it was broke in. Does it matter?

I think I am about to send this new one back any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you installed the rear tire...did you do the initial torque setting, back it off, and then do the final setting?

That process is to help pre-seat everything where it belongs and then drive it home in the right location. I believe the book says to tighten to one torque value, back off 15 full turns and then torque to a higher value.

I'm not sure about the belt direction...some are marked with a direction...some aren't...if there are no marks on the belt then I wouldn't worry about it.

However...you could do a little bit of inspection to maybe figure it out...look along the inside of the old belt and see if you can find a repeating patter in the wear lines...if you find one you can try to match that up to something on the sprockets. Also check the side walls...you may have been rubbing one side and not the other - then you can look for the shiny side of the sprocket sidewalls...

If you dig through posts from the anony's, assuming they are Buell engineers, they said the main concern on the belt is being too loose, and it is almost impossible to be too tight.

I've done some belt drive testing myself, as a study about putting it on an FSAE race car, and I pretty much came to the same conclusion.

I wouldn't worry about it. I also doubt the belt will have any measurable stretch.

I'd worry about it, but it wouldn't help, so you shouldn't worry about it.

Its driving me nuts worrying about it. After looking closer it seems compared to the stock belt each "tooth" is about 1/8 of an inch taller because it is newer. Also measuring from the valley of a tooth to the smoother outer portion is about another 18th of an inch thicker. After looking at the 2 pulleys and the part of the belt running across the idler pully. It would add up to be somewhere around 3/4 in tighter. I am giving it about another 100 miles and if it isnt any better I am sending it back.

Didnt FUELL do a write up here recently on this topic? Anyone know what they said?

This is not a good thing, a belt too tight can damage bearings. On my latest new XBs I've loose the tension almost immediately, after 50Km or so. Much safer, IMHO.

How did you loosen the tension without throwing the rear tire out of alignment??

Working on the idler pulley... increasing a little bit the diameter of the 2 holes, but shhhh! ; )

Well, the belt tension is non-adjustable. Unless the belt or some part of the bike was manufactured incorrectly, it is at the tension Buell designed it for.

The tension on this belt is greater than you will find on other belt driven bikes, because the belt tension does not change as a function of suspension travel. Other bikes run it looser because it tightens up when you sit on it.
