If a larger RRS would be an improvement, don't you think Buell would add one? Look at the improvements made to the bike since 2003.

I've stated it before. The left airscoop is made of ABS plastics. It's heat resistant to 80 degrees Celcius before it melts.

Buell could add the same airscoop on the right side, which could be obvious because of several reasons:
- symmetrical aspects
- point of engineering: mirror part and adjust to rightside frame
- more air etc.

BUT: all serieproduction techniques which would fit a product like an RSS aren't suitable for the high temperatures of the headers heat.

Imagine: the same kind of airscoop as the left side on the rightside, made of ABS, injectionmoulded etc. It already melts just during the testride..

That's why Buell made a flat ABS plastic injectionmoulded part, which isn't vulnerable to the heat of the headers.

That's why the RSS manufacturers have to make these of 2K resin / fiberglass etc. This material is suitable for high heat purposes.

I only can explain this as a designer/engineer (by profession), not as a motorcycle technician/tuner. That's why I don't mention any details about tech specs, temperatures.

I've never heard someone complaining about his RSS.

(now it's time to sit back, grab a bag of chips and a bud..)

to people posting in a manner they would NEVER speak in real life or to Abe's/Erik's face. I DARE you to make the same statements in the tech briefing at Homecoming.

I wish I knew then what I know now because I would have recorded Mr. Buell's excellent seminar at Homecoming 07. I think Court recorded it. Anyway, there was one gentleman from overseas that pressed Erik hard about something ( I can't recall the specifics ) and came damn close to being obnoxious and rude about it. Maybe someone else recalls the incident.

Daveg and Ft, I don't recall the original poster calling anyone a liar. Pleassseee show the error of my eyes.

You folks need a little stress relief.... ride more.

If that posters job with BMC is not at risk then the admins. of this forum should out him. We seem to hear alot from the power people here about treating each other with respect... yep always a good idea. The post by anony was disrespectful and furthermore the contributor is masked by the use of anony. The common folks here would not be afforded that same priveledge.

Make sense?

"ABE is a good guy but I think he is towing the factory line."

"If Abe is right then we would see some fuel problems at low speed from someone ... but none or at least from BWB's. "

"Abe I thing is towing the Motor Co. line on anything non-HD/Buell. "

"Nothing personal to Abe, he is a good guy to take peoples questions and writes a piece in Fuell, but emperically his statements are not showing up in real life buells with RSS. This is not a statement of anyone is a liar or personal only bias ...and only bias. "

"if they were so gifted we wouldn't have had 5 years worth of defective headlights, and a YELLOW annony unwilling to address said problem."

"Show me the test results from adding the RSS and I will believe you. "

"Annons can point to "Buell testing results" to back up their statements all they want but when I hear that I always think back to early XB bearings, R head lights, ULY sidestand, ULY BAS mounting, ULY bag latches etc. and wonder is the testing inadequate or are the test results not being analyzed properly??"

" Now You, I said Abe's comments to date have no evidence by reports or posts on the internet ... hense bias work by my esimate or IMHO. Insted of coming up with a post saying lets say ... the tempature sensor of the engine is fooled by the RSS..." Something or anything objective on why RSS is not a good idea, you just repeat what was said before and start say F---U."

I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I saw at a quick glance.

Were I just come Joe reading reactions to my statement regarding the test results from the RSS, I'D come to the conclusion that my integrity was being questioned.

Wouldn't you?

Man, what the #%^&@ is goin on. I need to step back and take a whizz.
I just wanted to know how to take care of the heat problem on the lighting. The one that cooks your right thigh. I had heard that the RSS would take care of that, or at least help.
I like the infr from Abe. You can take it or leave it. No need to diss a guy.

"I too am disappointed with the casual manner vulgarity is used in public today."

Maybe it was because he was tired and harried and was just sick of talking about the same things over and over, but in the one converstation I had with Erik Buell, he was cursing like a sailor. I found his candor and demeanor (and his expletives) quite refreshing as we spoke about non-motorcycle issues (guitars and CAD programs) as well.

He was not towing any company line, believe me. That's why I think (the first Anony's) "F*** off" comments came directly from... The Mountain.

Ft's, I still don't see anyone calling Abe a liar. Yes, there are some comments in there that are not appropriate. There is also truth is some of the comments you posted above. To the best of my knowledge there has been no report of vapor lock from those using a RSS.

Again, I ask Abe or Anony to spill the beans on other potential problems of installing a RSS. Let's stop the Shite and get back to the issue. Just the facts, thats all I'm looking for, just the facts.

We folks that live in the warmer climates need all the help we can get to make our ride safe and comfortable. Yes, for me the heat is a safety issue because it does impact my ability to concentrate and focus on the ride.

DJKaplan, if that was 'The Mountain' that made the comment I'd be VERY disappointed. I've not met the man but have a great deal of respect for him for all that he has accomplished. Please say it isn't so!

Mainstreamer,

What does it matter? Abe has stated why they didn't use the scoop.

If you want a scoop and think it will help with heat issues, buy a scoop.

I don't think it will help the RIDER, but the RSS seems to reduce the run time of the fan.

Buy one, put it on, if it has a negative effect, take it off.

If you can't see how those statements impugn Abe, I can't help you.

Huh. Between my armored riding pants, and my over the calf boots, I have never felt any uncomfortable heat coming off the bike.

Maybe you can address your problem with stock bike and different riding gear?

The bike is kinda stock, only has the factory race pipe and ecm and filter. I think I have the fix, from Odie, the heat shield. That is if I can get a hold of him.

These will help some, but be careful about directing too much heat to the ecm/bas area. I have had to bas shutdowns while the blanket was over the bas. Several of us have modified the blanket to tuck under the bas and have not had a problem since.

Just the facts, thats all I'm looking for, just the facts.

How many times do you want them? So & so got cursed at because you guys keep pushing the issue when you get an answer you don't like.

Reasons?

1) It's not necessary. This is the answer I got when I asked Erik about it personally at last homecoming. The fan is sufficient.

2) It screws with EPA specs. Something that we don't have to worry about - but THEY DO!

3) It screws with the temps across the fuel rail.

4) It creates an air pocket because of mirrored airflow.

Myself, I always had a concern that shrouding the front cylinder with a scoop on the other side could cause it to run hotter at the expense of cooling the rear.

Now we have reasons 2, 3 and 4 stacking up against reason 1. These bikes are a purposely and tuned machine slash system designed with a managed airflow system. Note the word "managed". The fan is the final part of that system. It comes on at the result of known parameters to keep things operating in a controlled and predictable heat range. The scoop is an added, unknown parameter that does not allow the system to work as intended.

Quite frankly, BMC has been kindly silent in not calling out the scoop makers for something that we now know is clearly detrimental. They've tried to tactfully drop a few facts on us to disprove the anecdotal evidence without pointing fingers, allowing us to be adult, educated consumers, free to muck up our bikes if we insist.

Oh, and I am not above mucking around myself. I returned to a stock air filter for the heat evidence on my spark plugs from the K & N [in conjunction with my stock ecm]... Admittedly quite trivial compared to this debacal. But you know what? My engine ran noticeably cooler when I went back to it. Fan comes on less and there is less heat off the engine. "There" is a real thing you can do to reduce heat.

Another thing you can do to reduce heat in this area is to wrap or ceramic coat your headers. Both cost about the same or less than the scoop and proven, good alternatives.

Get those heat blankets to place under the airbox and/or seat. Sorry - I can't remember who off hand make them. Someone reply with a link.

Sometimes we get burned by the torches we carry. This is one of those times. Lick your wound and get over it!
