I just put the Keda RT-3 with the matching EBR ECM on my CR and it runs like a champ. It's very smooth and the power increase is definitely impressive.

I took it for a 25 mi. test ride today and it ran great. I did notice some slight backfiring when I would close the throttle on decel but it seemed normal to me considering the type of exhaust on the bike.

The real issue I noticed was when I shut it down and checked it in diagnostic mode for error codes (out of curiosity). I then tried restarting it and it didn't turn over at first. I keyed off and keyed on. Then I had to turn it over for awhile before it would fire up, but it had a hard time catching. I ran it back home and parked it. Out of curiosity I tried to restart it again, and it turned over for awhile again for it to fire up. And when it did it backfired through the exhaust pretty good.

AFVs are both 100, TPS is reset and reads fine. Only thing to note is the battery has been showing weakness for the past couple months-like 11.9 volts on start up.

One thought is the ECM is still learning since I haven't ridden it much since the install. Just wondering if there is something I should be mindful of when it comes to hot restarts or should I wait it out and see how it behaves the more I ride it?

hot restarts can be challenging for any 09+ 1125's electrical system.

Keep your RPM's up and the battery will do better.

Typically I ride it around 5K RPM, or above, depending on what I'm doing. It acts as a fueling issue, or fouled plugs, and I never experienced it in the stock setup. The battery started to do a slow death march a few months ago. On a cold start is fires right up.

In my experience, hot restarts on the 1125 motors are tough, period. I think what happens is that they shut down with a lot of fuel on the walls of the throttle bodies, which evaporates and builds up in the airbox.

When you try to start it after 5 minutes or so, it hasn't had time to clear out, so you've got an airbox full of fuel/air mixture that gets sucked in, but the ECU sprays the starting blast of fuel, so you're just too rich to light off.

It all builds up in the muffler, and when you finally suck enough clean air in to get back down to a sane fuel mixture, it lights, and then proceeds to light all the stuff hanging out in the muffler for a "solid" start.

I'm not sure there's a good solution other than just knowing about it. I've taken to cracking the throttle slightly open on a hot restart - it lights off more reliably this way.

Thanks Syonyk. That came to mind as well. A little extra air wouldn't hurt to breathe it out.

I've definitely noticed when I pull the airbox after a ride for whatever reason that there's an awful lot of fuel still in the throttle bodies (on the walls, mostly). It's more than enough to create an overly rich mixture that just won't light.

Quite embarrassing, though, if you don't know the cracking the throttle trick. Shiny new bike, stop for a bit to fill up... *crank crank crank* *crank crank crank* ... *crank crank crank crank crank WHAM putt putt putt...*

I added an extra ground see here (scroll down)...

bought a Shorai battery for my race bike - it's gonna do double duty on my 1125- we'll see how it handles the summer heat

I have the same setup on my 08R it had the slight popping decel I used permatex ultra copper high temp rtv gasket(700F) on the RT3s connections and the popping went away.
Did you let your bike idle for 10 min. when you installed the ECM Both my bikes 09CR and 08R start great when they are hot.

Yeah, I did the ECM install and idling per the instructions that came with it. It runs great, but the hot restarts are questionable. I will probably booger up the connections with rtv as well.

As I think about it, the stock ECM ran lean so there was little chance for it to be rich at start-up. With the EBR one running at the right ratio I guess there is more of a chance of it being fuel soaked at a restart. The bike definitely runs cooler with the EBR ECM at least.

Nuts, you have a good point. I checked out the link, and I will go over my grounds. I may try your mod.

Syonyk, thanks for the tip. Being that I shut the engine off at red lights, I can easily start the bike about a dozen times a day. Hot restarts haven't really ever been an issue for me on either of my bikes, but like once in 20 tries it will not start on the first attempt. I now give it throttle after stopping, not sure if it helped or not yet, but so far so good.

*blinks* I... provided a useful tip on 1125s to *Froggy*?

Also, I thought you had to be doing that to get the numbers you saw. I considered it, but my HIDs don't always light off properly after a power cycle (and power cycling is hard on them), so I haven't really done it much. My commute was mostly highway anyway.

I don't know if it actually makes a difference, but it certainly seems to, and sucking through more air for the same start-spurt would certainly tend to lean things out slightly. Once it's lit it'll be fine, but that initial light can be rough.

Froggy, you shut off your bike's engine at red lights?!? I might do that if I had a bike that overheated and I was in traffic in the summer, but otherwise, no friggin' way!

I realize you are trying to hypermile, but wouldn't the startup enrichment pretty much negate any fuel savings with the engine off?

I have HIDs too, I don't give a damn about them, if they blow up, it costs like $10 for a new ballast.

Flesh, yes, I get the 54mpg somehow : D
On my evening commute I can easily coast half a mile with the engine off, then leaving it off at the red light that stops me. That can easily be a good 3 minutes of total time I didn't burn any gas, so it ends up being worth it. I can't really do it while on the highway, but I do have some hills where I will run it up to 70 or so, then cut it and coast down the hill till I hit about 50.

I can easily coast half a mile with the engine off,

what does that do for lubricating the tranny?
Or engine temps on cyls and heads if hot and no flow other than convection?
}
Froggy I get 37 mpg and just try to keep a consisitant 3~4K rpm u suppose all those starts wear on the starter,

Shutting it off and coasting half a mile? Isn't that rough on your transmission and your starter? The transmission requires the motor to be running to lubricate it, and the starter will have a shorter life if you're using it more often.

To me it seems like the wear and tear on the bike would negate any potential pennies saved in fuel costs:

$3.75/gallon x 1 gallon/54 miles x 0.5 miles = $0.034.

Hardly seems worth the effort to save 3.5 cents.

edit: i should have refreshed my browser window -- olddog beat me to the punch!
