I recently put some 1125 race parts in the classifieds. One potential buyer says he will take one of the expensive parts but only if I take payment through PayPal. I won't do that. I've read too many horror stories on the WERA forum from sellers when using Paypal. Somewhere on the BadWeb is a post from Court about the legal hassles and fees he encountered when using Paypal as a seller. Why should I risk thousands of dollars on Paypal? BTW I don't care who has never had a problem with selling on Paypal, that is no guarantee that I'm not going to get taken like many others have.

When I suggest USPS money orders or direct wire to my account, and the buyer refuses saying they only want to use Paypal, should I get a little suspicious? I'm not going to detail how buyers can abuse the Paypal process to take advantage of sellers. That would only propagate the problem.

So, am I being too cautious? If I can't sell my parts then why not put them on my street bike? At least I won't lose any value that way.

Your advice appreciated.

The most import thing in protecting yourself is documentation.

Pictures, print outs, and signed forms with sigs from both parties would take away any anxiety you would have with doing payments.

I would prefer to use paypal only myself, yes i have had my share of issues with them but everything worked out in the end.

What it boils down to is good communication and like i said before...document everything.

The benefits of paypal are: it allows you to accept credit cards, which opens up a whole new group of potential buyers (Those that have credit, but no cash), it instant, it protects the buyer and seller, but tends to lean more towards the buyer.

Personally, I only use paypal for ebay transactions. It's quicker and easier than getting a money order and mailing it.

If they are willing to pay the fee or send the money as a gift, then I wouldn't think twice about it. I usually figure the fee into the item I'm selling.

A lot of buyers like paypal, because it protects the buyer in case what you get is not what was advertised.

There will always be dishonest people out there, willing to cheat the system for a few bucks. You can fake a money order very easily, so unless you cash it at the post office, then you could still get taken.

My bet is the guy doesn't have the cash, so wants to use his credit card. I only accept paypal on ebay auctions.

From a buyers prospective, I wouldn't buy high dollar items without the protections Paypal offers. You have been here a while, I know you probably aren't going to take my money and run. I've been burned in the past by sending a $300 money order, so I would honestly be hesitant about going that route again.

Paypal does indeed suck for the sellers, but it is currently the best option short of cash and having the buyer pick it up.

The reason for good documentation and pictures is preparation for legal action. That doesn't relieve any anxiety for me. I provide pictures anyway. I don't see how this protects the seller. Why risk it?

You guys got way ahead of me on the posts! I understand your positions. I've done the send $ and hope the seller complies. It does suck.

I guess the best answer is to sell your hi $ stuff locally.

Lots of Paypal scammers buying stuff out there.

The fake paypal reciept looks very real unless you check very carefully

The amount of scams these days on net is wild.

My fav is the Western Union money order which has the protection of a MCN.

Tell my why Western Union uses a Money Control Number when its not required to be presented upon collecting your cash?

Western Union says just dont send money to people you dont know.

If your selling on here, i'd trust the buyers, ive bought and sold loads of my Buell parts using paypal. once a few emails get passed across you get a general idea of the 2nd party, you could always exchange phone numbers and even talk.

The worlds not a bad place : )

I'll use paypal if I have to pay before the seller ships. It protects me if they just don't ship.

I'll do cash or money order after the part is in my hand. That protects the seller for a part I had the chance to inspect and that they know I got.

Everything in between is... in between... and somebody has to take some risk. Paypal balances both (though I'm not impressed with their availability and customer service).

In general, even in the case of a dispute, you will get reasonable fairness from Paypal. It may just take a long time and a lot of frustration.

I like to use Paypal because MY bank info isn't shared with the other party.

Craigslist is best for big and big$ things... local with cash.

I DO tend to trust anything from here, no problems yet. : )

So i thought until i saw Paypal Merchant fees setup on my bank account for an AU (australia) account. Never sold anyhting on paypal, never bought anything from AU.

Contacting Paypal for resolution got me nowhere. Canceling all Paypal transactions for my bank and canceling CC was required to save my account.

Yes, we ride knowing the risks and work hard to minimize the damage done when the crash happens.

If not we would be riding in shorts , tees and flip flops.

As a buyer, I won't buy anything remotely without using Paypal unless it's a low-dollar, low-risk item. If I send a wire transfer or a money order, I have no recourse if the seller just pockets my money or sends me a wrong/bad item. (Let's be honest--the cops can't/won't do anything. I'd have to take the seller to court, and that often isn't worth the time.) With Paypal, I know I'll get my money back if something goes awry.

As a seller, I know I have to take Paypal for remote transactions, as many buyers feel as I do. So far I haven't been burned, although I know someone who was--although he sold an iPhone to someone in Russia and the Russian postal service doesn't offer delivery confirmation so when the buyer claimed he didn't get the phone, Paypal gave him his money back. Lesson learned there--don't deal with out-of-country buyers if you can avoid it.

Like I said before, do a search on "PayPal" on the WERA General forum and read about the way sellers get burned. After all the good input here now I think there is only one way for me to deal with large items like race exhaust or chain drive, and that is to sell local. It's the only way both parties can feel safe.
