Getting cold in Canada and I notice the 20/50 oil is not rated below 40, I plan to ride into the winter. Should I go to a 10/40? Do I need to change my filter if I move to that oil? Can you get synethic in 10/40? Thanks Kyle | ||

I've run syn3 in all my bikes, air and liquid cooled, year round for years with no issues. | ||

The 10w40 will shear to a 5w30 in a couple thousand miles or less, depending on the oil. If you ride a lot over the winter, you'll want to change the oil frequently. You should also send a sample in for analysis after your first change to see how it's holding up. | ||

i switched to repsol 10-50 syn for the winter. it makes me feel good....and the trans shift even smoother. | ||

If I recall correctly from my reading at bobistheoilguy.com, the Repsol 10w50 is pretty prone to shearing. I would avoid attempting an extended change interval with that oil. | ||

well crap! i was looking at motul, and i heard the same thing about that stuff. break down. there's no way i'm going 6,000 miles on an oil change, 3,000 at the most. so i think i'm good | ||

I've got 1500 miles on my current fill of Mobil1 15W50 and was thinking about switching it out for a 5W40 for the winter (and running an oil analysis after 1000 miles to see if it had sheared out of grade) but I think at this point I'll leave the 15W50 in until the 6200 mile service, at which point there will be 4000 miles on the oil. I'll change it and send a sample in for analysis and I'm pretty sure it will be fine--I have run the same 15W50 in my '03 GSX-R1000 for almost 10K miles and it had only degraded to a 40-weight in that long interval. According to the UOA, there was some gas in the oil which was partly responsible for the lower viscosity, so it wasn't completely due to shear. After I dump the 15W50 next year, I think I'll try the 5W40 for a thousand miles and see how it does. I don't mind doing a 3000 mile OCI (since I have several bikes and they each get at most 2-3000 miles a year) with a thinner oil that provides better protection during cold starts, as long as it stays in grade or close to it. | ||

Too much salt on the road in Ontario. Our bikes have a lot of aluminum. That's why my bike goes away from first heavy snow, when the salt comes out, until around Valentine's Day when the rains, or sweepers, clean it up. Fragile wiring would be another concern. We've got a gift of a couple more warm days. I'm still riding but also checking out winter storage options. Sorry, my way of dealing with the oil question is not to worry. The salt over-rules. | ||

The Highway Dept here uses Mag Chloride, not bad on steel. but loves to eat aluminum. I hook my power washer to the hot water heater and hose the bikes down once or twice a month thru Winter. I walked up to the Uly this evening after work. The windshield was fogged up and there was ice on the seat. Dave aka Jammin_joules, was the only other rider today besides me. I did see another bike on my ride into work around 9:30 am. I hate driving cages, even "fun" ones. Z <edit> yes, yes, yes. Red Line 10W-40 is in Loretta year-round. …and I don't power wash my bikes. That's personal choice. I feel power washing does as much harm as good. Salt: that's physics. |
