Speaking of Laguna, I'm trying to go low budget. Anyone have any good suggestions for economical transport especially to and from the airport. Looks like San Jose International is my best option for using my AA frequent flyer miles. Nothing like procrastinating till the last minute. : ) Would be cool if there is a bus service with regular departures that would get me to Monterey, Seaside, or Salinas where I might could then walk or hitch a ride to the track with someone.

I dig Smash Mouth! Not much for big crowds. Imagine the fun one might have at an abandoned race track in the evening. : )

What are your plans Jimbo?

BTW, we still have two BadWeB sponsor passes left.

i hear that Laguna is about two seconds away from selling out (i.e. 200,000 people) for this first time in history. doubtful ANYTHING is gonna look "abandoned" during the weekend.

blake- there is bus service from san jose airport to monterey.
fortunately, san 'ho' is a rather small field situated right off of rt. 101, which is the hwy. to take down toi the monterey peninsula exit (rt. 156 west, just AFTER the 156 e 'hollister' exit).
there's bus service that'll bring you right to del monte in downtown monterey, and service to laguna from there, although i'd suggest meeting up with a badwebber in downtown monterey.
back in april i had to change my plans and fly back to ny, otherwise i woulda been there now and woulda snagged you at the airport and offered you our couch. woulda shoulda coulda.
anyway- belive it or not, IF you have the spare change, renting a car at san ho and driving the 1.5 hr. to laguna and using the car as a basepoint (bring a tent to toss in the trunk) might turn out to be cheaper. as to puddle-jumper flights to monterey, forget it, they're too expensive to be worth being an hour and a half closer.
as far as hotels, stay OUT OF MONTEREY proper, stay in seaside, which is absolutely next-door.
it's monterey's 'seedier' cousin, with some reknown for crime and gangs, but, honestly, you really ahve to drive into seaside and look hard to find anything really bad these days.
there are some EXCELLENT motels right on rt.1 in seaside, i've stayed (and have directed friends to stay) at the 'economy lodge' on rt.1, and even the holiday inn express on the border of monterey and seaside is pretty affordable.
tell them you stayed there two years ago and got a $59- rate, and you were wondering what they 'could do'.
even if you don't stay there, go there in the AM for continenetal breakfast (stride in greeting the concierges as if you're in their most extravagant room), get seconds and thirds, and stuff some bananas and bagels in a bag- they won't think twice.
trust me, i've done this at the place.
further, they have an excellent internet station next to their little exercise room, all on the first floor.
for cheap, GOOD eats, like i'd said, stick with the safeway supermarket on rt.1 on the south side of carmel. toss a few subs in your cooler and head for the track.
hitching's a breeze in california, as i'm sure you know- hold a sign (make a nice one before you go, one you can fold into your rucksack) reading "laguna" with a simple graphic of a sportbike, and plan on barely ahving time to hold it up, along the road, you'll be scapped up by a fellow enthusiast in a second, and likely make a cool contact. I know if I were driving a car to an event, and saw a hitchhiker with such a sign, i'd hoist 'im in a second.
anyway- lemme know if i can steer you toward anything specific-
-Jay

renting car is indeed the way to go. Monterey isnt the most pedstirian friendly area in the world. walking to the track from town isnt an option. Its a few miles out. there are no hotels NEAR the track.

If you havent booked a room yet... good luck. The area is sold out. Finding spare camping ticket for the track might be the way to go.

Check in over at SacBORG and put yer info up on the "contact info for BORGERS at Laguna" thread. We'll all hook up at some time. If nothing else, up on Fox Hill.

Laguna doesnt REALLY empty out at night. The camping scene is pretty wild.

Picture Watkins Glenn in the 70's... Laguna aint QUITE that bad... but close. No burning cars in the in-field, but last time I camped, there were raves, police actions, ambulances called in, and certian substances that oxidize VERY energetically tossed into the campfire : D

ahhh, 'the bog' at 'the glen'....
no, laguna's pretty pedestrian by comparison,
but fun's still fun.
there'll be rooms to be had in seaside, which is actually closer to the rt. 68 east exit off of rt. 1.
camping along the coast is cool as all he-double hockey stix, just stay south of carmel, not north.
excellent public restrooms at the 'crossroads' shopping center on rt. 1 in carmel, also on monastery beach, both on the far south side of carmel.
incredibly easy to 'poach' the jacuzzi at the holiday inn express on the border of seaside and monterey, too.
believ it or not, the frightfully prestigious park hyatt-carmel highlands has a virtually walk-right-in jacuzzi, as well. park anywhewre and walk down toward the restaurant, carrying a white towel.
if you got to the bar at carmel highlands, (not to be missed) overlooking the rocky cliffs on the pacific, please say "hi" to my dear friend, nenito, the bartender. very, very cool filipino cat, mixes some mean drinks!

Amen on that Chop!!!!Back when I used to be the only Bueller on the "HILL" and ther were NO reserved sites at "Cork-View" we would be awake all night cause of the leftover fireworks from the weekend before.Scramp would erect a huge light on a pole and when the fireworks would go up and explode ON would come the lights and would light up all our tents for 20 minutes.Everyone would calm down, the lights would go out and 2 minutes later KaBoom!!!ON would go the lights,on would go the PA and it would go on and on untill we(oops,I mean THEY)would run out of fireworks....or Alcohol....or whatever.Sometimes we would sneak onto the track and leave our monikers in the sand traps so the Video Cameras would read it in the mornings and then they would have to rake them in the mornings.

Tramp,
Thanks amigo for all the info and tips on Laguna. Sorry to hear you won't be able to make it to the races this year. I was lucky enough to make it to the AMA event there last year with a couple of good friends. We stayed at the econo-lodge in Seaside for a mere <chokecough> $172/night. I have no traveling partners with whom to share a room this year and so am planning on camping at the track. Some thoughtful and gracious BadWebrs have offered me a spot on which to pitch my tent, and I plan on digging through the old posts and finding out who they were and imposing myself upon them. : ]

Jerry,
Sounds like it will be a very interesting experience. Hope to see you there.

Ditto for you Chop and Eric and everyone.

MotoGP at Laguna!

And I'm 6000 bloody miles away more's the pity. I just can't imagine the atmosphere. 200000 people at a bike race
has to be some kind of record?

You all have a great time as I know you will.

What if indeed. I am thinking along the lines of the Texas Tornado though. I cant wait. Our tickets came yesterday.
I'll be driving up Thursday night. I will be in a little Toyota truck I borrowed from my father in Law. Buell in the back for weekend transportation.
Make sure you guys riding up have my cell phone number just in case.
This is my Anniversary trip as well (cool wife huh) so its going to be fun just getting away in General. My wife is really stoked about this too, she said she will be drinking pretty much the whole time.
I was in Monterey for work a couple weeks ago, I cant imagine how packed it is going to be.
Lets do it!!!
