Mbsween,
Your primary breather vents from a hose which is routed up toward your tail light. If there is too much oil in the primary, it will come out that hose. The specified amount of oil for the primary, is for when the primary is DRY, not when you do an oil change, as some is still left in there.
I only put in enough so that it touches the clutch basket.
Could be the culprit on your bike too?

Gents,
thanks for the suggestions, this is what I have so far. The brake reservoir appears to be full, however the junction just above the brake pedal is all wet. It doesn't leak sitting in the garage applying the rear brake tho. Also I'm a student of Mr code, the rear brake doesn't get used much.

Josh, funny that you mention the bake oil filler cap, I added one recently. It was on, but the top of the oil bag has some oil on it, not a lot, but some.

I haven't added any transmission oil or changed anything except oil and tires since the beginning of the year.

So the "last thing I did check" in replace front brake pads, and remove rear tire. I'll look for the vent line in back

The verticalness would indicated low speed, but I think that area is pretty sheltered by my leg during riding. I only had a bit of oil on my boot heel after a 50 mile ride.

Thanks
Matt

I would bet anything on brake line still. On my X1 the rear line had a very tiny hole in it near the swingarm & it sprayed fluid out in a pattern very similar. Its vertical due to the up & down motion of the swing arm catching the spray. Look at the pic & notice a large wet spot on the swingarm directly beneath the brake line coupling.

Matt.. My cyclone looked a lot like that twice. The first time is when my Ford FL1A oil filter spun loose during a spirited ride. Of course in that scenario, your right leg is also soaked from knee to toe, so that is probably not the case.

The second time was this spring, right after my first spirited ride of the season. I had probably overfilled the primary last fall, and it was not run hard all winter (too much sand and gravel everywhere, it gets ridden but gently and it is always cold out). The first time it was out and really hot and really run hard, there it was, not quite as bad as you show. The second hard trip out, about half that much. The third trip just a dribble onto the rear tire. Last trip, just a smudge around the inside of the tail section.

The same thing would probably happen with a main seal failure, so I was watching that, but even after my first good drooling I still had too much fluid in the primary. I think I just over filled it.

That is another good reason to use mobil 1 full synthetic. You can tell by the smell what is leaking.

It should be fairly straight forward to smell the fluid and determine whether it's brake fluid or engine/tranny oil.

Well, I used to have the utmost confidence in my S-3: hop on it at a moment's notice, ride all day, get off refreshed and smiling. Just turned 22,000 miles, and now it's all changed...

It's going into Departure Bike Works at lunch. A wrist pin in the front cylinder seems to be the current prognosis. Sigh.

Hey guys. Well the throttle cable snapped on my '95 S2. The dealer says it will be at least 4 weeks to get it in. I kind of assumed it would be the same as the sportster's but I guess not. This will kill me if the bike is down for ovber a month. I am trying to figure out how to get around this. I have a few bikes that could be canabalized lying around...maybe I'll see if a cable from a 85 Sabre or something will work! Any ideas would help, thanks in advance, JD Miller

Jdmiller,
There are emergency kits available that have a plain cable with lots of different ends in them.
I have one which lives on my bike when I do trips.

JD: call Tat at ASB or one of the sponsoring dealers here. I have no doubt that the cable is similar to one of the Evo Sportster or Big Twin cables. All it takes is a bit of interest and a tape measure on your dealers part.

Matt,

I agree with Henrik. Sniff and ye shall understand. ;) Also keep in mind that, like Reep says, if you had not yet run long and hard enough and in warm enough ambient temperatures your tranny/primary lubricant even though slightly overfilled would likely not result in any breather vent ejection. Why?...

What happens, and I've seen this firsthand, is that small amounts of moisture can accumulate within the primary and transmission, get heated to boiling, and cause the primary and or transmission to become pressurized thus forcing anything in the way of the pressurized air/steam and the breather vent to be carried/pushed out the breather as well.

As far as I know water can accumulate inside the tranny/primary via two basic mechanisms... by condensation or by forced ingress of water.

Condensation happens as warm moist air cools inside your tranny/primary. During the cooler but still humid months accumulation of condensation can be significant. Once water condenses on the inside surfaces of the primary/tranny and drips down becoming mixed or submerged in the oil, it cannot evaporate until it reaches its boiling point.

Forced ingress of water can happen if you pressure wash your bike and the rubber boot covering the clutch cable adjuster has shifted, losing its seal, or if you somehow manage to spray water directly into the breather line.

It doesn't take much water to make a lot of steam that in turn can generate a lot of pressure. So , if/when any moisture inside your tranny or primary is quickly heated to the boiling point, it pressurizes the primary/tranny which in turn blows itself and anything in its way out the breather and in some cases even out from between the primary cover and the engine case. Really, that is no lie. I've seen it.

If the primary/tranny does not reach boiling temperature, you'll not see any breather ejection. But whoa be unto any tranny lube in the way when the moisture does hit the boiling point and, being heated and stirred vigorously by a hard running transmission and primary, vaporizes violently. The tranny/primary suddenly become pressurized and any oil between the pressurized air/steam and the tranny breather vent gets blown out the breather. In my case the water seemed to be more isolated to just the primary area (makes sense given it had entered via clutch cable), as it vaporized it actually blew steam and hot oil out from between the primary cover and the case at the front of the primary. Totally freakish thing. It happened on my first long ride on a hot day Texas Summer day just after I had thoroughly washed the bike. Plus, being a Buell newbie, I had unwittingly dumped an entire quart of Sport Trans into the primary.

How does water enter via the clutch cable?... Take a look at your clutch cable adjuster cover, a little rubber boot that seals the cable adjuster from outside contaminants. The top portion of that boot is meant to seal tightly around the upper ferrule of the adjuster. If it gets pulled up so its sealing collar area is above the ferrule it acts like a little funnel. Water (rain, wash, whatever) can then enter the primary case through the exposed clutch cable adjuster. That is what happened in my case; the boot with its top left loose around the clutch cable instead of sealed tightly around the larger diameter adjuster ferrule acted like a little funnel and happily channeled a few spoonfuls of water into my Cyclone's primary. The results are as described above.

I am also seeing a problem with the Last Day, and Last Week for that matter, links. When I click on Last Day I see mostly Storm Fronts but a few others too. For the New BadWEB Software topic the most recent post it shows is from 8:40 last night even though there are posts from today and even after 8:40 from last night. For the Last Week link all I get is Storm Fronts and the most recent post is from 4/25.

It says at the top, for both Last Day and Last Week: Your search found more than 100 posts. Is there a limit for the results returned and it's dropping everything after 100 posts have been found?

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's it. The Last Day and Last Week link will only show a maximum of 100 posts. I kept decreasing the units= (units I assume means minutes) line until it was units=360 (6 hours) then the line at the top read: Your search found 78 posts on 29 pages in 8 topics.

Not sure what the number= line does. I changed it to 2 and then 5 but it made no difference.

If you right-click on the Last Day link you can copy the URL. In Internet Explorer it's called copy shortcut. Then paste it into the location bar. The last part of it looks like this:

search.cgi?method=last&number=1&units=1440&tree=ON&where=all

The method, number, units, etc. are variables that are passed to the search.cgi script. By copying the URL you can then change the values.

The search utility and last day and last week functions are working fine for me except for only returning 100 results. I think I saw in the setup for the new version a place to specify how many results per page. Haven't been able to find the admin setup parameter to change it though.

Thanks for bearing with me while I figure out this new stuff. Hey, this IS a Buell enthusiasts' site right? LOL

Peter,
Thanks for the heads up on the :/ smiley shortcut problem. I should have seen that. Changed it to ": 7" without the space of course.

For anyone who is interested, here are all the smiley shortcuts currently available...

I think I know what the variable "number" is. It's number of days. If you look at the Last Week URL it's identical to Last Day except number=7 instead of 1.

How come everybody's status number is messed up? I was worried it was something I did but now I don't think so. All I did was change the number of days to 2 and then 5 but because it was only returning 100 posts it didn't really make that much difference.
