from Soup:

Buell announced they were withdrawing their XBRR Formula Xtreme bike until they worked out the bugs, but Mike Hale is here to race a Classic Harley Davidson Buell. "We built one of the older bikes," said Hale this morning. He said things were going pretty well for the American machine -- that is until the engine blew in qualifying, bringing out the red flag.

A Buell XBRR just won the overall endurance race at the ASRA event at Road America, and another finished second in Supertwins. Final shakedown. They are coming soon, and will have been worth the wait.

Anyone else notice the Brembo brakes and Marchesini wheel on Mike Hale's bike?

And it was so successful too, wasn't it? Once again, someone changing something they don't need to change. The XBRR that won the endurance race yesterday at Road America had the ZTL system, as did all the XBRRs at Daytona. Road America is the toughest circuit on brakes in the country.

Dave Estok won that race yesterday on an XBRR. And Steve Crevier on another one had about a 30 second lead at the first fuel stop in the Road America endurance race. He had a clutch problem that required a lengthy stop for adjustment, since the bikes didn't have the trick levers to allow him to adjust freeplay. He also had something else that had him come in for a stop of several minutes, so he wound up fifth overall or so.

And anyone who was at Daytona saw, the ZTL system gave up nothing to the best dual sytems out there. Seems like Hale's team would have done better making the motor stronger instead of spending money and screwing with something that works. Oh well, hopefully they will have an XBRR by Infineon or Road America.

Wow, nice anony slam of the ONLY Buell that showed to race in FX this weekend. Prior to the XBRR mag wheel & 8-piston caliper (which is still not readily available), the setup on Hale's bike was available superbike tech. I've held those calipers on my hands, they weigh practically nothing.

And a slam on team decisions & motor building too, from behind the veil.

They were there, with no press release & fanfare, doing their best with what they had. And this is the congratulations they receive? Nice.

No it was meant as a slam on Jim who constantly for years has mocked ZTL. Sorry, but it is the same level of ignorance. And wasn't the team leader the one who posted he didn't need no stinkin' XBRR? Sometimes it is so tiresome to listen to the same old slams, over and over. After all, Jim, why did you post the photo and comments on the calipers if not to beat the same old dead horse, eh?

>>>why did you post the photo and comments on the calipers if not to beat the same old dead horse, eh?

In my opinion, it's nothing but trolling.

There are smart engineers who have spent a good deal of time and effort to optimize the ZTL braking system.

It works splendidly, in fact it's been PROVEN to work splendidly.

There are those I refer to as the "In-Line Luddites" will, and have for years, take to task anything that is new and innovative. It's the "if it's ot like mine, it's no good" crowd. Some folks have a reputation of contributing little of value and acting primarily as catalysta to internet arguments. It, to me, is setting a fairly low personal level to aspire to...not that difficult to simply say "yours sucks".

This picture, like the one of the Buell with the oil on the fairing posted following Daytona, were never meant to evolve serious conversation, but a playground scuffle.

If you've got the time for that . . . more power to you.

Aspire Higher

Yep, same team leader. Some would believe that the factory would rise above such comments, and offer their support. Last I checked, the Buell logo had not been removed from the bike or team trailer.

It's too bad we can't rise above this and get behind the brand.

I'm not at all certain the comments could/should be attributed to the "Buell factory".

Major leap of faith there.

I have my own concern about the use of the Anonymous function being used to sling anything, assuming a source is equally dangerous.

Ben,

The support from the factory for that team has been significant over the years. Not much money, but every part, advice and design that could possibly be passed on. Many of the items sold by Innovative were designed at Buell. I believe they do have an XBRR on order.

The anonymous posting shouldn't have been negative towards the team, that was a shame. But I can understand why Jima4media gets under the skin. He was simply trolling as he loves to do, and I know that is irritating to the folks who work on and believe in Buell motorcycles and designs.

Nice to hear about the XBRRs at Elkhart; wish I was there!

Mike Hale pulled into the pits after lap 5 in the race today.

I have never mocked the ZTL design or said that it was bad. I have simply stated that other designs are just as good if not better at the actual job of braking.

Glad to hear of the success at Elkhart Lake this weekend with the XBRRs. I want to see Buells succeed, but at this rate, it is taking a while.

Are we going to see any Buells at California Speedway or Sears Point?

Mike was running 25th when he came in the pits. He did go back out but was four laps down, but at least he finished (sort of). I'm glad to hear the XB-RR tests at Road America went well. Any details on what was fixed and what improvements were made.

if the xbrr was ready for an asra race that would not receive national press coverage, then i fail to see how it could not have been ready to race at barber. where do you spend your race budget? bike obsolete and new bike will be delivered sometime this season, but exactly when? i appreciated the fact that richard and mike were at barber and trying hard. the backup bike was a pro thunder spec bike and started in last. it was nice to hear as it came around the track. anonymous slams at race teams is not appreciated by me. come out from behind the curtain for these types of comments. just back from barber.

Smoke, it was a final shakedown. I think they wanted to run a race away from the cameras as it were to make sure everything was right. If they had shown up at Barber they would have gotten a lot of unwanted attention.

hi Dave,
i can see the point you are making. there was a lot of hype and publicity over the daytona debut and i think that a documented struggle for parity in fx by Buell, in the limelight, would also play well in the media. not my decision, though. hope to see the xbrr on the ama race scene soon. the only mention of Buell that i heard on the loudspeaker at Barber was when Mike's engine blew.
ride safe,

Sheesh... How did I miss this one?

Anyway... Why change the brakes? They have proven themselves. People from the very top levels of motorcycle racing skill like them. They don't need to be changed... That said... It's a free country but I think Anony makes a good point myself. Maybe I'm just biased ;).

I also applaud anyones efforts to go out there and lay the rubber down. I'm all for it. I don't see how that means no one should say "WTF?" every once in a while though... really....

So anyway, where is RA again?

Anony sez:

"The support from the factory for that team has been significant over the years. Not much money, but every part, advice and design that could possibly be passed on. Many of the items sold by Innovative were designed at Buell. I believe they do have an XBRR on order."

True, but the MoCo also left Rich and Hals high-and-dry last year for the FX season two months before the start, after the December Cycle World had the Hals machine on the front cover with the headline, "Is this Erik Buell's Daytona 200 Winner" or something to that effect. This did not do much for Buell's race cred with the fans...downright embarrassing really.

It may have been just a coincidence, but after HD had a 4th quarter stock loss of 17%, the board apparently freaked out and dropped the Buell FX support with NO warning to the teams. This was after the teams had laid out substantial amounts of their own money, which was not reimbursed, prepping for the Daytona 200 and the season.

After that fiasco, I am surprised that Rich and Co. are still even wanting to race Buells. He must be a true believer. However, he also was sponsoring a Jap IL4 at Barber...not wanting to put all of his eggs in one basket.

Rich has always run a first class racing team and his bikes have always been top notch...and very well engineered. They did very well with Barney in the seat (not too bad with Woods too, although he said he never liked the way the Buell handled), and could usually be counted on for a top 10 finish against full factory bikes that cost 10 times as much.

There certainly is nothing wrong with the Brembo brakes and Marchesini wheels that Rich were using...factory Ducks and others are similarly shod. Maybe they didn't "need" to be changed, but that is a matter for debate...and changing them was common with both Hals and Innovative Tech in the early days of FX.

Obviously, Mike Hale's bike was not in the same league as the XBRR, if for no other reason than the engine. I wish Rich and Co. the best with their racing efforts, regardless of whether they get the RR. At least they were out there trying at Barber. I had fans coming up to me with my Warrs T-shirt on asking where were the Buells? They didn't miss the chance to dig a little about Hale's Buell blowing up in qualifying, and then not finishing competitively. I handled it like water on a Brembo shod Duck's back. What else could I do?
