I will start this thread to follow the build on my 160 CID S2 build. I have posted some pictures around here before, so here is where I am now.

The motor mounts and frame mods are done. The cases are together for the final time, but the cylinders and heads are just mocked up.

Lots to do before it is ready to run. I plan on running open/naked next year and add a fairing the following year. This will be a bike for both Maxton and Bonneville

Jeff

Jeff, that thing looks bad as hell..... Now I know a "puny" 107 incher will fit in a Buell tuber for sure. Those look to be S&S Pro Stock heads, the ports look almost as big as credit cards. You must be looking for around 275 RWHP on gasoline? maybe 330 with nitrous? Good fortune and happy hunting my man.

I don't think the HP will be that high. I am hoping for 220-250.

This engine is about 5 inches taller than stock. I chose the S2 frame because I could remake the side plates to move the swing arm pivot down.

I will post some close ups of the engine. It is a 4.8" bore x 4.375 stroke.

About the mounting is it gonna be solid or rubber? That will probably be a huge shaking beast of an engine.

It will stay rubber mount. I want to be able to see at speed! Here's a picture of the front motor mount and the modified tie bar mount. The motor mount is 3 pieces of steel welded together. It uses one of the normal mount bolt locations and 2 more bolts in the bottom of the exhaust port. These heads are way different than stock and there was no place for a normal Buell mount.

The Lower part of my XRTT fairing got pretty much destroyed at Maxton this year. My front fender broke off and mashed the fairing. At first I plan on running without a fairing and maybe add a RR or airtech fairing next year.

Deciding what to do for an induction is one of my next problems. The standard twin D carb manifold that S&S sells doesn't fit this frame at all. So I will have to build something. I hate fuel injection, but will probably go that way. I am going to search for an automotive twin bore throttle body that I can make work.

Yeah Jeff thanks for posting. This is so interesting. And since I'm wanting to put a smaller engine ( 107" ) in a tuber all the mounting photos are really helping me out. VERY,VERY COOL..........steve

So Jeff since you are using a rubber mount system you get to be asked the question that goes on and on in the old school board. Which forward isolator are you using?

I guess I am not sure what my options are for isolators. Right now I have a new stock HD one on the bike. I do have an aftermarket stiff one that I picked up. I don't remember the brand. I have never had a problem with these on my Buells.

Jeff you 100" motor was rubber mounted too wasn't it? Didn't that engine make about 150 RWHP?

Yes, the 100" is rubber mounted. It makes 140 on gas and 170 on spray.

I am a believer in the rubber mounting system. I don't see any reason a person would want to rigid mount a Buell assuming the bike is aligned right and nothing is screwed up elsewhere in the chassis.

Jeff I'm really glad to hear that for my own project. Now another question, if you were starting over would you rather use a S-1 or X-1 frame for mounting considerations. I'm planning on a XR style dual carb 107" AHRMA BOTT F-1 road racer...........

I have a 96 S1 and had a X1 street bike and now have a X1 race bike. The S1 is a sexier looking bike, but the high HP S1's I have ridden have been scary. One was a 100" making about 125 at the wheel and the other was a turbo making an honest 155. Neither handled well at all.

I would use an X1 because of the extra tie bar on the top motor mount, the extra brace on the front lower tiebar mount and because it has the bolt on tail that allows you to build a steel tube subframe to match any fiberglass tail you want.
I have been impressed by my X1 LSR bike and my X1 street bike that I had
The S1 could be beefed up like they used to do on the ProThunder bikes. It is also narrower where the seat meets the tank which can be nice.

How about 4 (four) 48mm Lectron carbs to a custom manifold to fit the birdcage frame bars? Easy tuning for elevation changes from Maxton to B'ville, and it's not EFI. Inline four drag guys are switching to injection, so maybe some are available on the cheap.

It's my theory that the rubber mounting may be cause for piston scuffing with Buells in LSR, but who knows.

Anyway, it's a nice clean build. Plus, as we used to say, there's no substitution for cubic inches.

Now piston scuffing is something that I do worry about. I can see how that could tie into rubber mounting. I just fit things super loose and that seems to work.

Actually, I am kind of concerned with the general cylinder strength with this engine when combine with the Buell rubber mount system. These cylinders are fairly thin aluminum with a press in liner. To try to combat this, I plan on building a beefy mount to tie the heads together on cam side of the heads to go with the normal top mount on the left side.

8000rpm seems about right. I don't plan on pushing it super hard because it has to hold together for a long time in a run. The new Prostock engines are hitting 10,000, but that has a much better valve train.

Sure like your plenty skookum front mount and bracing, plus your modified sideplates allowing for taller, which is certainly limited on production units. I hope it works well and am looking forward to reports next season.

Alot of the really developed big inch ( 160-186 cu in ) AHDRA Pro Gas bikes use Jessel valve trains.

Jessel makes new rocker boxes and rocker arms that replace the traditional EVO stuff. The main advantage is stiffer rocker arms I think. The redesigned new billet S&S 160 prostock engine uses Jessel arms.

I am going to just run traditional S&S rocker arms. I know that is boring, but...

The old skool set up like I am running relies on a lot of valvespring pressure and TI valves to spin to 8000.
