Here's the problem. The g/f can just barely tip toe the Uly. So getting her on and particularly off tends to involve some gymnastics. I've almost dropped the bike twice trying to manage this. I thought I'd see what other people have to say before I do drop it. Any suggestions?

Getting her off is a common problem, especially as we get older and more flexible. My suggestion would be to teach her some basic gymnastics so she can learn to stand on her head and spread her legs, thereby allowing you to just drop it in.

ummm,....maybe,....I think he means she can't climb on to the saddle. I can see this with the triple tail up and the tailtrunk on.
Does she stand on the left peg with her left foot and straighten her leg, then swing her right leg over the seat? I agree, when I use a gear bag on the 9R its like climbing over to get on the bike. I'll find out this spring when Fiery rides with me.

The swing over is not the best. The step thru is. Face the bike step on the left peg with the left foot and step thru not over with the right. Once mastered it is very easy.

Jim,

When I first read the title of the thread I was going to respond with something similar to Shotgun and Dragon_slayer, but when I realized you had started the thread I exercised discretion. Kinda hard to believe, ain't it?

Had a similar problem with my wife on my Kawasaki Concours. Here's what I did.

The wife now wears a harness with a big aluminum ring attached by a piece of 250 cortech. (How I actually sewed the ring in place is exceptionally entertaining, but a bit long for here. E-mail me for details.)

In my backyard over the driveway leading to my basement garage I have erected a steel lattice structure. (By the way, I modeled the structure after the lattice frame of a 2004 Ducati 900 Monster)

Hanging from the structure is a high impact plastic hook attached with a length of bungee cord.

(You see where I'm going with this.)

As I pull into the driveway, usually at a high rate of speed, the wife holds the ring over her head, jams it onto the hook and then the bungee cord does the rest.

We had to reconfigure the derrick-like structure several times as the wife banged her head into it upon dismount.

But now we have a very easy way of getting her off the bike, and whenever the neighbors hear us coming down the street, they all clamor to see the event.

I'll go along with what Bob and Coolice have suggested - I too have almost tipped the Uly over a few times and have also learned to avoid pillion on/off work on any sort of sloping ground. For added stability we have found that to have the bike lightly on the sidestand (with me taking some of the weight so I don't stress the poor old sidestand too much), then my wife follows the step-through procedure described above, sidestand up and you are good to go. Getting off is the reverse process (in the best traditions of manuals that describe assembly as the reverse of disassembly and leave it at that).
You need to persist with getting this on/off sorted as this is one of the best two-up bikes I have ever ridden.

Very simple Guys,

Lady hops on the bike (which is on it's stand) first, places her left foot on rider's left peg and flings right leg over and slides back gets comfy, awaiting the male to mount.

After enjoying the ride, the male dismounts first.

The lady then swings right leg forward over the seat and is gently assisted of the bike.

Opto and I have had no problems mounting and dismounting and find it a pleasurable experience.

We have been using the "left foot, left peg step through" with much success. The "Bindy" method sounds doable as well. Have to try it out if it ever warms up.

The "Shotgun" approach is also interesting....hmmmmm, how to get the wife to go along with it....

Jim, Good title. Getting off or turning on is always a challenge. I gave you my suggestion on C3, but have heard Bindy's approach before too. I've never tried that but always open to new ideas.

Why did that sound wrong?

You can always drop your kids off over here if you need time to practice.

Try my method on your girl and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Take care,

Jim, Jim, Jim -- "thanks for bringing the Uly by?" Oh NO, you just didn't go out and get a Uly did you??? I'm with Bigdaddy when he says he's jealous. Did M2nc influence your decision? Drop me an Email with details.
