One failure of each type so far for me. Instant pedestrian. Same with many others. Just saying "efi just doesn't fail" does not make it a true fact. It does not matter if the failure is electronic/software related or design related. The fact is, we be walkin.


I planned on using a fuel pump and regulator mounted outside the tank. This will make it easier to inspect and service. It will add a bit more fuel capacity too.

Why all the hate?

To self--> wait til they find out I intend to use a cv carb from carl's speed shop. Everybody hates that carb!

Looked up the Carl's carb. impressive. The description reminds me of early attempts at single jet flat slide carbs (Lectron before they added a float bowl) only this uses CV slide.

I can't wait to see photos of how you adapt this side draft carb to the Ulysses.

I have not even opened the tool box yet but my first idea is to fab up an adapter manifold that replaces the throttle body and ends up pointing horizontal and to the left, inside the airbox. Carb bolts to that.

Certainly no hate here either.
Trying to be humorous doesn't always come across in text. Or I may just suck at it!
I just don't get it, that's all.
If we had a poorly done EFI, I might understand, and it sounds like a phenomenal amount of work for uncertain results.
I still have 1 carb bike left in my garage. No trouble with it, though I had to mess around with jetting and venting quite a bit to get it to run off-road and without lean surge on road (also a CV carb). It's been fine ever since, but the carb is more sensitive to fuel quality and especially old fuel than my EFI bikes have been.
Neither a carb nor an EFI has ever made me walk home so far.
I will be suitably impressed with anyone that gets such a conversion working and running better than the stock EFI setup.

my EFI left me stranded when the throttle shaft broke....I'll keep the EFI but most certainly prefer Carbs

Sounds like a fun project if the Uly is not your primary ride.

I once put a Holly 780 vac secondary carb on a Honda GoldWing 1100. It ran pretty good with it. It was only done as a test to see if the engine was any good.

I bought a wrecked GW. The PO was a liar about pretty much the whole deal. He said the bike went down sliding on the engine front cover, it bent the cam front sprocket and cam and that was all that happened. So I got the parts, put them on to find that one piston was in no way connected to the crank.

So on to a used engine. As I got it ready to run I found that the carbs were completely gummed and corroded inside. The guy said it had been wrecked within a couple of months and that it had not been setting outside. It had actually been sitting for four years outside in the weather, the guy cleaned the crap out of it armor all and all to sell it. I got it cheap but parts were crazy expensive at the time. I had found a carb set but they were as much as I paid for the whole bike.

Skip ahead a couple of weekends, and I had to know if the replacement engine was functional before spending any more money. I mounted it up in the bike, hooked up everything that made it go, ending up with a big gap where the carbs should have been.

I liked the way the four rubber intake runners lined up. They made it easy to build an intake out of exhaust pipe and sheet metal. It looked like a mini tunnel ram intake. Set the 780 on top and it fired right up.

I have to admit that the main reason I did it was two guys whom I worked with bet me that it would never work.

Then I was moving so I took the carb off and sold the bike as an over budget lost interest project. On to the next guy.

When I was an apprentice, I worked for the same company as my cousin Colton. One day during winter when work was slow, I was heading from the shop to Hanford and Colton had no assignment so he was going to stay at the shop and work on his car. He said the carb was acting up. When I got back to the shop that evening, Colton had made his own carb using mostly sheet metal. It ran quite well and he drove it for years.

A spray can can qualify as a carburetor. It's all about coordinating the throttle plate with the spray. Such a cool thing to do while riding a little bike with one hand on the bars!

You reminded me of a go-cart and a mini-bike that me and my friends had. When the carb worked, I ran a hand or foot throttle with a length of fishing line on the governor arm.

When the carb didn't work.....LOL....I recall a time that a buddy would run behind my go-cart with a spray can of starting fluid while I was in the seat running the throttle. It worked great until I would go faster than he could run!



I like carburetors for their infinite mechanical ability to be adjustable. When I raced it was amazing when I got my first real race engine builder's built Holly carburetor. It had the same physical size as the street racing Holly that I was running, but simply bolting it on made a difference of over fifty horse power. And it ran soooooo good!

You can do some amazing stuff with greater control, while getting better fuel mileage with a fuel injected set up, but damn.....I can set up a new carb in my Chevy V8 powered Jeep with all new stuff from the intake up for about $600 that will add about 40 HP. To do the same from scratch with injection would cost around $2500 to $4000, minimum, then I need software to set it up, and without a tuner of some sort to carry with me, I can't adjust it on the fly.

If you ever watched 'American Chopper' towards the end of it's first series run they were making their own carburetors out of a solid chunk of billet aluminum so that they could get the thing to be of some shape.

These kind of projects depend heavily on a creative genius paired with a dull witted accomplice...

I have to admit, at times I've been the creative genius and at times I've been the accomplice..

Yes you can carb the 06 bike if you want to pay the $$$ and take the time to do it.

A carb with an electronic ignition is one thing but a FULL EFI bike has a combined "cross talking" ignition/ fueling system which works together for far superior results.

There is nothing wrong with the fuel injection concept and EFI is just the modern version of the original mechanical type.

The problem with the Uly is not the "concept" of EFI but the quality of the parts and/ or the wiring/ build of the bike itself.

I do understand how difficult it might be to get into understanding SPY/ TUNER-PRO with this bike but it really is worth the effort.
