Well, I finally got my first Uly. I've been wanting one since they came out. However it was never the right timing.

I got a 2006 Black with 25k on it. Bought it out of the Bad Weather bikers classified section. Drove to the Hoover Dam to pick it up.

My previous bike was a 2007 Suzuki Bandit 1250S. I grew up on Dirt bikes, so I really wanted to get something with a little dirt worthiness. Man I love this thing.

A couple of things.
Lots of torque down low. The front end seems to simply float. I could get my Bandit's front wheel off the ground with no problem. But the Uly simply floats up. I've never been a wheelie rider, I just like to loft it up from time to time.
I will definitely be doing the XB9 primary swap at some point. 1st gear is too high for slow stuff. I've been riding without 5th gear, so I don't think I'll miss it. I love to get up to speed quick, but I'm not one to maintain high speeds for long. I don't like to pay for speeding tickets.
I've got a charging problem, so I really haven't ridden much. The previous owner thought he had it taken care of. He changed the Starter (not bad so I have a spare), the voltage regulator and the Stater. It left me stranded with a dead battery. I have a manual, so I did the checks recommended and it all points to the Stater. I have continuity from 2 legs to ground and open between those same 2 legs to the third.

It turns out this bike has the low seat. Not the 2007+ stock seat, but the lowest seat. I'm 6'5", so if anyone happens have the high seat and would like to trade, let me know. I will be getting one at some point, but would rather trade if possible.

congrats on the ULY....you will love the bike...I have a tall seat but you'd have to recover it as its Barricade Orange.

floating front wheel syndrome, it's a good thing.
I have a tall seat I don't use. it must have AM cover as it's smooth vinyl I think. But not very slippery or my butt sticks in one place kind of. can send pic if you email me at fotoguzzi@yahoo.com

If you want it to pick the front tire for more than floating, in first gear run it to 3,000 rpms then whack it wide open. Should bring it up about a foot without having to pull back on it.

If he changed all that stuff out and you still have a charging issue, I'd give the 77-connector a look.

The 77 connector was replaced. That was one of my main questions before I bought it. I did look at it and everything looks good. It is the 2 pin plug and not the 4 pin, correct? The test for the Stator has you disconnect it from the voltage regulator, so it takes the 77 connector out of the equation. Oh, and with the bike running, there is only output on 1 leg and it's too low. The other 2 legs have nothing coming out. This is done with the Stator disconnected and reading from each leg to ground using a standard multimeter.

I did get a response from Al at American Sportbike. It appears that there was some Stators from Harley that had some interference issues. I'll tear it apart and have a look see.

Congrats on the new toy! If you have to tackle the stator then you might as well tackle the XB9 conversion at the same time. I think you'll love it. If going off road at all then the 08 triple trees might be nice since you're use to dirt bikes. Get it dialed in and go have fun!

How close are the primaries between the XB9 and the 883 sportster? I have a friend that gave me a used 883 primary. I haven't seen it so I'm not sure of the condition. I question the condition because I don't know why he changed it to begin with. Would it work if it's in good condition?

I remember reading somewhere years ago about modifying the triple tree to increase the angle. IIRC, they ground off the stops then drilled a hole for a bolt. I haven't looked at mine yet to see if it's possible.

Yes my profile is up to date and all info is correct. Congrats on your new purchase. I also has a 03 Suzi 1200 Bandit with all extras too. Traded it on my 06 Buell. Man I'll tell ya, I wasn't sure at first I was going to dig it. But it sure has made a great impression on me, and wouldn't have anything else.

The trees will hit the frame with any mods. If you buy the 08 trees it's a bolt on mod and it doesn't rake the forks, it just set them further forward. Since the frame is tapered it allows them to turn more.

I received my new stator yesterday. I got in late so I wasn't able to finish the job, but I couldn't help but tear into it. I did confirm that the old (recently installed) stator had a clearance problem. I took the advice from Al at American Sportbike and modified my new stator. I took the plastic "comb" piece out and epoxied it. I let it cure overnight and it looked good this morning. I should be able to button it all up tonight.

I wish I had the extra funds to go ahead and change to the XB9 primary while I was in there. I may try to make that a project for this winter. I'll also look into getting the 08 trees to expand my steering angle.

The 77 connector is for the 2 heavy gauge wires going to the regulator, one being 12volt hot and the other is for ground. Do yourself a favor and watch the videos for checking the regulator diodes and stator voltage here: http://www.roadstercycle.com/Roadstercycle.com%20V ideos.htm

Helpful hint on that site is to never jump start a motorcycle from car with its engine running. It will fry your regulator.

Thanks for the link. I'll check out my regulator. I'd be pretty upset if I went to all this trouble to replace the stator just to find out the regulator was also bad.

I did know about the jump start from a car thing, but it's always a good reminder. I've had to jump a bike before, but I always make sure the car is not running.

Got the Uly running Tuesday of last week. It killed me to not ride to work on Wednesday, but I wanted to let the red loctite on the 2 big nuts in the primary time to cure. Rode on Thursday during a nice downpour. The Kurykan volt monitor I added gave me piece of mind.

Saturday I got to sneak off and do a little 100 mile loop with the new to me tall seat (Thank you Fotoguzzi). I like this thing more and more every time I ride it!

Question: While scrolling thru the indicators on the Odometer there is a Trip F. What is that? It's in the rotation with the Odometer, Trip 1, Trip 2 and the clock.

That is your reserve fuel odometer.

It will start counting up from zero when the low fuel light first goes on.

When it hits 28 or so, it's time to panic. ; )

Ah, okay. Thanks. My low fuel light is on the fritz. It comes and goes. The previous owner was up front about it. I did some research before buying and it appears that this is fairly common. I believe you have to change the fuel pump to fix it. I'm okay with simply using a trip meter, for now.
