After running the Uly again, coming home from work, I found that the tail light and indicators would not work. It was dark and wet and not happy to mess with them at the time. I found the issue to be with the ignition switch and a few on and offs fixed it. Bad contacts inside the barrel.

It is a great bike but the electrics are NOT GOOD ENOUGH for a modern bike, Italian made as well, and are most of the problems I have had with these bikes.

Bad contacts inside the barrel.

I wonder whether that's the source of a phantom momentary shutoff my engine's been doing. Most recently Friday while traveling a very rough section of street on the way to work, shuts off just long enough to trip the light then back on again. Can't duplicate it wiggling anything and there is a persistent rattling under the flyscreen that can't be eliminated though everything under there is secured. Can these switches be disassembled I wonder?

Yes, but engages again so quickly that only the light comes on, no instrument needle sweep like what happened when my 2006 ECM was failing. I hope it's not the ECM, I'm running a 2007 in there and the bike has been running far better than with the original. Maybe I should start digging into the '06 ECM an get the board flowed just in case, if that was the problem...

Have you tried shooting some electronic parts cleaner in there?

A 06 and 07 ECMs are the same and is DDFI-2.

You say the light is that the headlight or the CEL light?

CEL light. By 06/07 ECM's I'm referring to the mapping for each. The 07 ECM was a new take off and though my fuel mileage dropped a bit the incessant pinging that plagued my bike since new with the 06 disappeared.

The pinging issue was the first of many that convinced me the service department where I bought my bike was staffed with morons.

Anyway I hope you sort it out, no lights on the back of a bike is not good needless to say.

My 09 has been having issues with the switch lately.
Sometimes I turn the key, lights come on(headlights) tach needle sweeps and I get a dead IC.
Wiggle the key a bit and all is good.
Once last week, it went dead after running fine for 20-30 seconds.

I'll fix it when it gets worse...

My bike is fine it is just crap quality electrics and I deal with it as needed.

If your bike runs good on your 07 ECM then that is fine. The CEL system is crap but if it does come on then you do have a fault at some point in the bikes system. In your case it sounds like a wire damage, a VERY common issue, or maybe the BAS. A logged run should show up the problem and is the best way to go on any FI bike.

I have always been amazed at why Buell used high cost German military grade, 10 cent Italian scooter and other electrical parts on the same bike. Or the stupid idea of a "triple spliced" loom Earth at the head stock as it would have made more sense to have run it another way.

But hey what the hell do I know? You want electrics that work EB then come and see me. And YES I AM a qualified electrical engineer.

Xbimmer, Your symptoms sound like the ones I have with my '07x. It happens to me every 2or3 hundred miles -- going down the road, engine dies, restart before it even slows down, check engine light comes on briefly. The thread I started, spontaneous death (and resurrection), is still in the current threads. One idea was that the ECM is loosing power briefly, but I haven't solved the problem yet.

I had an issue with my Uly ignition switch a few years ago. On 3 or 4 occasions, I turned the switch on and got nothing: no gauge sweep, no lights, no fuel pump. I cycled the switch a couple of times and it started working. After the third or forth occurrence, I figured I better do something. I removed the fly screen and noticed a ~1/8 inch hole in the side of the switch. I got a can of contact cleaner and stuck the nozzle in the hole and sprayed and worked the switch a few times. ~3 years later, it's still working flawlessly.

just this last summer my 2006 Uly was having electrical problems and I thought for sure it was the ground wire on the front of the bike. I plain didn't have the time to mess with it so I took it to the dealer to have fixed. In about a half hour they came out to show me what was wrong. It was the ignition switch. They ran some tests on it and that's what was the problem. Replaced the switch and it ran like new again and to think I was arguing with the mechanic telling him I thought it was the ground but I was wrong!!!

Yup, my ignition switch went bad as well. If I remember correctly some lights and turn signals were working intermittently (figured it out by wiggling the switch and reproducing the problem).

I was not patient enough to wait for the spare used one I ordered to arrive. I took it apart by carefully prying with a couple of small flat blade screw drivers. It's finicky work and you have to really observe how it comes apart so you can put it back together correctly. One of the contacts had gotten so dirty it heated up and melted the plastic and sunk into it a little. I heated the plastic back up and pushed the contact back out. Cleaned up all the contacts and put it together again. I can't believe it's still working... it's been way over a year ago.

I'm keeping the spare used one I purchased because I'm sure it will be needed at some time in the future. I plan on taking that one apart and salvaging parts from it so I don't have to re-key the seat and helmet lock.
