Sorry to hear about your crash. Glad you wear the gear though. I've crashed at 60 MPH and walked away myself, so I know the feeling.

I am curious about this statement though:

You mentioned yourself this was only a 500 mile trip, how many miles do you consider long distance?

400-500 is my normal riding, 800-900 is what I consider ultra long (and I've done that way too many times).

I'm just guessing here, but he is probably considering long distance to be any distance long enough that you might fall asleep while riding on the interstate... : )

I'd say any ride over 150 miles is enough that it ought to be taken seriously and planned for.

I consider a 500 mile trip to be a relatively short ride.

An example of a longer ride, I was supposed to be riding from WI to CO in a couple weeks for the Colorado Freewheelers Rally (Iron Butt Event) and then riding back to KY from there which would log about 3500-4000 miles in about a 5 day timeframe.

Glad to hear you are o.k. I got run over by a blind and stupid kid in Daddy's car 2 weeks ago. He took my right away. Spend 4 days in the hospital and still suffer from pain. My Road King is totaled as well. People tell me be happy for not having further injury's but the loss of my beloved bike hearts. Best wishes for you

Heal quick, and glad to hear relatively light injuries. Concur with everyone's comments on waiting a week or so before moving forward on the bike related decisions; but as Froggy commented, you can get a new frame from H-D with the same VIN if that is the route you decide to take...

I would recommend reading Pat Hahn's chapter on riding motorcycles at night . . .

Werner - You heal quick too, but at least they still make Road Kings. . .

Hey everyone

Alright well here is the update with the bike.

The insurance company did total out the bike and gave me my payout today for it.

I had the option of buying it back but the insurance company wanted 5700 for the buyback. I told them that was a little too steep for me so it was sold to salvage.

Crashedtoys.com bought the bike and they are picking it up on monday, so it should be up for auction on their website soon.

For anyone who might be interested in the bike to bid on it there, send me a PM and I will give you a full disclosure of the damage. In my eyes the bike is worth no more than 3 grand, and the frame is bent so it would for sure need to be replaced.

Yeah Progressive really hit me hard with the buyback so it made my decision quite easy.

I have damage to my MCL in both knees. The Doc said that P.T. is about the only recovery option I have because they dont do surgery on MCL's hardly ever. So hopefully PT will do the trick.

So Was the frame really bent? Or was it the rear subframe?

The actual frame is twisted. I have never seen this before on a buell and it surprised the hell out of me. I took the seat off and it was very obvious. If you look at the steering head and follow it back, the frame has a counterclockwise twist to it.

Court- Nothing broke off of the frame. The twist isnt bad, but its twisted none the less. From front to back we are talking maybe a 5 degree bend. The main impact zones on the bike were the front top left (handlebar area) and the back (from when it flipped over). PM me if you want any special frame measurements or pics. I have the bike in my posession till tomorrow morning.


There definitely are plenty of great parts left on the bike, and in all reality I think you could get it back up for 3000 bucks (thats with the new frame). Obviously with that price you would have to live with some scratches and other issues.

Here is a rough estimate of parts and prices

Frame 1300
Front Wheel 300
Airbox cover and flyscreen 300
Front fairing brackets 300
Instrument cluster 200
Comfort kit scoop 50
nose fairing 70
Handlebars 60
Ignition 200
Headlights 200
windscreen 80
Clutch cable 50

Again, that leaves things like the subframe (bent down roughly a half inch to inch)
Swingarm (scratched)
rear sets (scratched)
rear wheel (minor scratches)
All bags are damaged
Passenger backrest is busted
front fender
headers
pretty much every plastic trim piece is scratched
primary cover is scratched
left fork (scratched) both forks appear to be straight though
handguards
new heated handgrips
mirrors (glass is still good, all scratched up though)

I have repaired many salvage vehicles before and honestly to do this bike properly you would be completely upside down in it. I would guess to do a full repair you are talking somewhere in the 6000-7000 area just for parts.

If possible, I'd like you to try to get a couple good photos of the frame including the various lugs, head sections and mounting points. No big deal, mostly curiosity to see if it performed as predicted.

Please do not, cognizant at you are recovering, go out of your way . . . It,, like I say, is pure curiousity.

I agree with your decision. The price the insurer put on the bike is unreasonable. You have the better part of $8k in a bike with severely dminished marktability.

Bummer...a little late to the party, but I'm glad you're not more seriously hurt. I was also interested to see that you're the only other person who bought the Icon Field Armor boots . It's good to see they held up well - their mesh makes them great for my warm weather riding, but they still seem very stout.

I hit a deer a few years ago...USAA didn't total my bike, though it didn't look as bad as yours did. They did, however, recommend that the frame be replaced. I looked at it and saw zero damage on it and decided to keep the frame's cash instead, and leave the original. Well, a few days after getting the Uly back, after filling the tank full, I found a hairline crack on a weld up near the air cleaner cover. Went back for a new frame instead of trying to seal it or weld it.

Anyway, it does look like there was enough part/frame damage to justify the totaling. Hope you can find another Uly or can take this "opportunity" to test another ride.

(FWIW, when I travel by bike, 500 miles is a very long day for me. I end up sleeping in, taking too many pictures and stopping at sights, and ending the day in time for happy hour)

Glad you are okay thanks for the ride report on how the gear, you and the bike faired. thanks for posting what happened to you. None of us are immune for crashing we just have to keep learning. Glad you are safe and made it out in good shape

You are one lucky guy. Speaking from experience, if you came away relatively unharmed, it was a good day. Take the money and buy whatever you want. I did and bought my Uly.
