I was driving up from Louisville, KY to Berlin, WI for a job interview yesterday on my new Uly when it happened (Only had a half hour left to go on the ride too). And to top things off, I dont think I got the job.....

I was wearing full gear as I always do and it truly saved my life. I was ejected from my bike at around 60 mph and I landed head first into a gravelly shoulder just before my Uly decided to fall on top of my ass and leg. My helmet was thoroughly trashed (front to rear) with DEEP gravel scratches and a nice 2 inch long crack on the side near the visor. My jacket was torn in the sleeve and took a hard impact in the shoulder. I had full leather gauntlet gloves with kevlar reinforced knuckles and the gloves are torn up pretty bad.
Boots were ground down in the outer sole and buckle and my riding pants have some small tears around the knee area (the waist strap broke in the crash).

Here is a list of the gear I was using:
Icon Merc Gloves
Icon Field Armor Boots
Tourmaster Transition Series 2 jacket
Tourmaster Ventura Air Pant
Scorpian EXO-1000 helmet

I walked away from the crash with 2 sprained fingers, bruised ribs, shoulder, neck, rear end, legs, and arms. I am however still waiting on an MRI this afternoon for my left knee and leg, there seems to be serious ligament damage but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

As for my holy grail of Buells I am torn, I dont know if I should keep it or not. The insurance adjuster is coming out tomorrow to look at it and he has already said (without seeing any pics) its a total loss. So now do I take the money and hope to find another 2010 Uly, or do I repair it?

Here is the quick initial damage idea:
Frame is gouged and scraped pretty good
Needs a whole new front fairing
Seat is busted
Rider seat back is broken
All three bags are toast (including my nice big top box which actually broke.
My Garmin Roadtech Zumo is toast (sat radio gone as well)
handlebars junk
heated handgrips junk
Instrument cluster
All plastics

Here are some photos of the bike and gear

WOW... glad you made out ok for the most part. All cosmetic? It runs?...why don't you keep it and turn it into a cafe racer.

Looks like the gear did a fantastic job. Glad you are ok. I would keep it and fix it. Make it the Yellow one you wanted it to be. There are so few 2010 Buells out there I think you would have a hard time finding a replacement. Good luck

I know mine took a heavy hit when I was hit by the drunk driver a year ago. It lives today thankfully! Gotta love the Icon gear. Send them a note about the gear with the pics and they will send you a "Survivor" patch!

Well the rough part is, it needs a frame and I dont know if HD will/can get a frame (and have it badged the same VIN as it already has).

The gravel did a fine job at scratching pretty much EVERY piece on the damn bike.

The bike currently does not run because the ignition is broken. The BAS killed the bike right away so there shouldnt have been any engine damage. If there was a way to bypass the ignition and start it, I would.

Thank goodness for the gear and kudos to you for riding smart

I'd wait 96 hours before I even thought about the bike.

Let the fog clear.

Glad you cane through in good shape

If the kill switched survived it can be done, at least I've seen it done roadside on a XB where the key was lost and fork wasn't locked.

Regarding the frame, if it really needs replacement, HD can get you a new one with your VIN. I don't know if they will do it as an over the counter thing but if a dealer was working on it they can order the frame, cut off the steering neck with the VIN, send it back to HD and get the new frame. The part that hurts is that it is $1300 for a frame.

Well the other option is finding the company that powdercoated the 2010 frames and have them recoat the frame. Issue is then, I lose the federal emissions sticker. Or the cheap option is buy some touchup paint.

Court-Danny Bilansky did get with me about the 2010 ECM (right now it may be a moot point for me), but he said the Spec Ops muffler seems to work well with the Drummer ECM that Erik Buell Racing offers.

That my unfortunate friend is a "total" buy it back from the insurance company and part it out for about 3k. Thats what I would do anyway. You need to really compare what you think you can get for the parts vs what the insurance company whats for the buyback. Thanks to the internet prices for crashed bikes is up due to bidding based upon detailed photos. Thank god your alright. I did a similar stunt on my GS with not so severe results but the gear saved my ass, I went out and replaced every damaged item with equal or better quality.

Frank- If I buy it back, there is no way I could part it out. If it continues to be in my possession I will rebuild it just as I have done with many other Buells of mine.

Wow. Another testament to wearing good gear. Glad you are mostly ok.

Gotta agree with Court to not make any immediate decisions about your next move regarding the bike.

Someone else asked this as well-what happened?

As far as what initiated the crash here is the deal....

Keep in mind when reading this, I am no newbie to riding. I have logged well over 100K on these bikes and have ridden in every weather condition (minus a hurricane).

I got a great amount of sleep prior to starting my ride, I had fluids during the ride, and keep in mind this was only a 500 mile ride.

Some of the issues that occurred were the fact that I went through a pretty bad storm in Indianapolis on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning that chilled me to the bone and caused fatigue to set in. I knew it was there, so I was making sure to stop every 50 miles to get some carbs and fluids.

When I was North of Milwaukee I was feeling great and I did not fill my camelback back up. I only had about 70 miles to go at that point, the sun was out and it was shaping up to be a beautiful day.

I went through Lomira and Fond Du Lac with ease and I remember seeing my a sign for my exit and saying to myself just one more mile till my exit. It was about 500 feet past that exit is when I fell asleep. I woke up right as I left the road and hit the freshly laid 2 foot deep gravel on the shoulder (all from road construction), but it was too late. I tried to control the bike enough to do a soft dismount but the front tire sunk into the gravel and the bike and I cartwheeled down the embankment before coming to rest 50 feet from where I lost control. The witnesses of the crash said I was flying in the air for about 20 feet before I landed on my head, and I and the bike slid and tumbled for about 30 feet after the initial impact.

So again, I am not a newbie to riding. But this event has made me reevaluate many aspects of my long distance riding practices. I take many precautions on my rides but it just goes to show you, it truly can happen to anyone.

Glad you are OK! Thanks for sharing all the info.

The insurance company will likely total that bike. I bought back my 07 from USAA for $1200 after they totaled it. Being a 2010, yours will probably be valued higher.

Why are you saying it needs a new frame? I see some cosmetic damage, and the position of the seat would lead me to look closely at the rear subframe, but the frame proper looks pretty intact from the pictures.

You can buy the grey plastic covers for the side bags separately (can't find them from a board sponsor, so if you want to know who PM me, and if any sponsors can get them please chime in!). Maybe line-x the rest of the bags, and put on new covers. For as fragile as those things are open, they sure are stout closed.

Glad you are OK! I'm assuming you have just decided that you are 100% responsible and taking full responsibility for the accident. (Kudo's to you... that's what I would do).

If that's not the case, PM me, and I'll remove this whole thread before Google copies and caches it. If there is any chance there could be litigation, you don't want to post anything publicly that hasn't been vetted by your lawyer.

Glad you are relatively ok. I've been very tired to the point of falling asleep. I pull over and crash out with helmet on for as little as 10 minute power nap and it certainly helps. You are lucky to have not killed yourself and unlucky to have learned the hard way.

Glad to see you alive and able to think and type. Kudos to ATGATT! Sorry to see the new bike trashed. I know where you are coming from with what happened.

Take some time before you decide on your next move. It may be a few days before you can see the whole situation clearly.

I almost did the same thing a few years ago on the Firebolt at an exit on the Pa turnpike. I moved into the offramp lane and dozed for just a second and snapped out of it just in time to brake really hard and not fly off the road.
People who don't ride can't believe how it can happen just as easily on a bike as a car.
I'm glad you're not too banged up.

Good to hear you're okay.

I had a similar experience, except I was in a rental car that rolled after I consumed about a half dozen
or so Long Island's. I had just closed my eyes for a split second.

I left some pretty big skid marks behind that time - none on the road, though.

You will spend more time and money trying to fix it than finding a replacement which would be another Uly or non Buell. I work at a Harley dealership and get sent out to pick up downed bikes. Insurance totals a bike anytime the the frame is compromised. Consider yourself lucky and learn from it along with the rest here reading this.

Not quite 4 years ago, I hit a deer with my '07 Yamaha FZ1 which resulted in the bike looking like your Uly currently does. About 5k in damage, technically totaled but repairable. I had the option to buy it back, but then I decided to just take the loss on the added accessories and told my insurance adjuster to get it out of my sight, and I'll just start shopping for another bike, which in the short term cost less money and took far less time than repairing the crashed bike.

Chris, sorry to hear the bad news about your Uly but glad to hear your ok. Motorcycles can be replaced, well maybe not a 2010 Ulysses but you'll find something to ride. Who knows, maybe in another year there will be a Erik Buell Racing1190AX or something like your Uly out on the market for sale.
