Anyone found an alternative to Buell stock muffler band clamps? I'm sure there are good aftermarket clamps out there. I am getting my smog check this month and need to put the stock can and ECM back on to pass. Thanks |

Apparently you can get an equivalent clamp from places that sell parts for 18-wheelers. The same type clamp is used on parts of their exhaust systems. OTOH it may not be any cheaper than the OEM part. Check the XBboard- I'm pretty sure there have been at least a couple of threads there on the subject, possibly including manufacturers and part numbers. |

Someone posted on here that most marine stores (West Marine for example)have them also. |

McMaster-Carr handles that type of clamp also. I don't remember off hand if the OE clamps are marked with the size or not. I've re-used my clamps like four times now, and they are still "hanging" in there.......I should really look at replacing them though. |

IIRC, the shop manual says the rear clamps can be reused, but the front is supposed to be a one-use item. |

Found them at marine store, and McMaster Carr has them, but I don't recall the size. |

Also try the local hydraulic shop. Found them there for $6. Better grade than the stockers too!! West Marine can be hit or miss. Most times when I went there, they were out of the size I needed. Plus they be expensive! |

I didn't realize motorcycles had to be smog checked in any state. Thought CA tried to get that passed thru the government, but it was voted down. |

I did see some place that HDs and the like are not allowed in Yellowstone park. Is that right, is it the engines or just bikes? |

The most common vehicle in Yellowstone Park is a Harley Davidson. As per one of their park rangers. |

Some gated residential areas on/around Hilton Head Island, SC will give you the and refuse you entrance. Had to go there for work last year. When I couldn't get to my rental house for the week I was supposed to be there, I checked HH off of the places I should return to before I die. |

I've used clampco before: http://www.clampco.com/products/t-bolt-std.asp I don't remember the size, and it's different for the front and rear. That said, if American Sport Bike sells them, that would be the place to get them. (Message edited by jlnance on May 04, 2011) |

Some gated residential areas on/around Hilton Head Island, SC will give you the ? and refuse you entrance. Kiawah Island (closer to Charleston) is one of those. The local HD dealer says they have sold new $15k bikes to guys that live there that were unaware of the policy until they tried to ride their new bikes home. |

I bought mine from American Sport Bike, price was about the same as A-1. Just added it to all the other stuff I needed. |

I needed a replacement strap so I ordered two through my local Napa. It took a week for them to get it right.. kept retrieving the wrong sized straps from the warehouse But finally I got the parts and they were only $4.95 each! Feeling really smug at all the money I saved, I go to torque the strap and the screw busted! I have a micor-torque wrench that might have been misbehaving. But when the screw busted, it was really soft looking metal. At this point I'm glad that I had bought two (hey.. at only $9 I'm still ahead!) so I put the next one on and go to tighten it... bam! That one breaks too! So off I go to the local Harley Dealership with my tail between my legs. Buy the super-de-duper expensive HD strap and I'm back in business. I'd love to find a cheap source for future use, but now I'm leery that cheap means... cheap! |

Metaldude, were they hose clamps or the t-bolt clamps/straps? Just curious as I've seen hose clamps give up pretty easily but the t-bolt units tend to try to be a little better than the average hose(r) clamp. |

FWIW, I got both, and both the Napa and the Marine shop T-Bolts were less beefy than the Harley part. That being said, I have been running the marine version for a while now, and its holding up fine. I just keep a close eye on it. |

IIRC the original was made by Dixon. I've had my Marine shop one on for a couple of years, no problems. Even reused it once. The marine shop here is a pretty nice one, (much better stocked than typical West Marine) and the band was pretty stout. |

http://weldwarehouse.securesites.com/cgi-bin/einst ein.pl?::1:WLDWH:1:number=STBC625 APPROXIMATE size, I can't remember actual, is $43 for a box of 10! Be careful of width, those 1 inch ones won't go through the bracket. |
