Prior to the ECM firmware update the very best road mileage that I'd achieved was in the 47 - 48 mpg range.

Just completed a 3.5 day trip, all 2-lane, altitudes between 5 and 8 k feet. Mileage ranged from a low of 49 mpg after a stint with about 80 miles of 2nd and 3rd gear twisties, to a high of 58 mpg for a tank of 50 to 60 mph roads.

My overall average for about 960 miles of mountain riding was 53.8 mpg. A solid improvement over the Uly's pre-update performance and making the bike a solid 200-miles-between-fill-ups capable rig.

Do you know specifically which ECM revision you have in the bike?

ECM updated? I just called American eagle buell in denton tx. They are saying there isn't an updated. Please post more info Mark.
Also, are you getting the same mpg with higher speeds, say 65-75mph. I ride all highway to work and to 70-75mph and the best ive ever done was 47mpg. Most of the time its 45ish. This is on a 08 xt. No update has been done to my bike.

All - they won't see it unless they actually hook your bike up to the DT. There is no bulliten, no recall, no nothing.

...good luck convincing them to spare 5m of their oh so precious time to do so.

I called several dealers in my area - none of them had any clue about it except for one (thanks Ratbuell). I am getting mine done tomorrow on my XT - am currently getting around 36mpg doing city commuting.

Yes and none of them will have any clue, as stated before in this thread and others, the only way they will know is when they plug in the digital tech.

This is the number that reads on the Digital Tech: M31US25y. When it was uploaded to the bike, it was the only firmware version downloadable. I think that the one that was resident on the ECU ended in 'o', but I am not completely certain.

The firmware does not show up on the HD computer as an update, just the current version. The information that displays on the screen did not give any sort of version history, only noted that the download was not chargeable to the customer. It is a free update. There are no notes saying that things should be changed.

I have a 10 mile commute that is about 3/4 freeway. My average speed for the whole trip is about 55 mph. Commuting has been yielding mid to upper 40s.

When the bike was brand new, mileage was in the upper 30s. By about 2000 miles, it would usually clear 40, sometimes up to 43. Has not been below 45 since the update.

The whole operation took about 30 minutes. The service manager initially looked for a service bulletin and told me that he had seen no notification. I came back in with the firmware version number and then he checked the H-D system. That's where we found the change.

This is curious because my dealer looked into the revised eeprom flash, spoke with Buell/HD and confirmed that there was a new eeprom flash. They relayed my concerns about poor fuel economy on the '08 X and the comment from Buell/HD was that the new eeprom flash would have little if any impact on fuel economy.

ECMSpy works on the first version eeprom (BUEOD0CB 06-04-07) for the '08 ECM. It seems unreliable on subsequent eeprom versions. That being the case I'm unsure of the following results.

I have compared my original eeprom (BUEOD0CB 06-04-07) to the latest eeprom flash (BUEYD0L4 03-20-08) and I see no difference in the fuel maps or the timing maps between these two eeprom versions.

So providing ECMSpy read everything correctly I don't see how the new eeprom flash could have an impact on fuel economy unless it's a placebo effect or ECMSpy is not reading the new eeprom flash correctly?

I'd put the fault with ECMSpy and the new eprom. My first tank or so I suspected a placebo affect (was expectation of increased fuel economy leading me to ride more economically?), however the improvement has been steady and I'm sure that I'm not that consistent.

My worst commuting mileage (most consistent riding) since the update is better than my best commuting mileage beforehand. The gain seems to be a consistent 4.5 to 5 mpg. On this trip, even the tank where I realized that I'd spent 80 miles cruising in 4th gear at 60mph still had better fuel economy than I'd ever achieved before the update.

Just got the ECM update last week at my favorite dealer 140 miles away. I had heard of a speedo error with the new update so I brought along my GPS to confirm. BEFORE update: speedo was spot on, odometer indicated mileage was 4.3% lower than GPS reading. AFTER update: speedo read 4.3% faster than GPS, odometer was spot on.

Seems my previously calculated mpg was poorer than actual. So 08Uly, here is corrected data for my '08 Uly:
first 2200 miles 40.7 mpg ave
next 5500 miles 43.6 mpg ave (after AFV reset)
last 162 miles 44.4 mpg ave (after ECM update + new rear wheel bearings + new tires)

I know the engine break-in should account for most of the improvement, but I am still curious as to why the AFV reset at 1800 miles caused such a mpg jump. I spend most of my time on the closed loop circuit. Anyway, need more mpg data with new ECM update. I'll work on that. I'll just have to remember to drive faster

All I can say is that my 06 did not get very good mileage the first 5k. But it has improved as the motor has come into its own. I average around 48 which is cool with me.

My updated 08 Uly is getting 45-48. I have about 3500 miles and the bike seems to be running better as the miles pile up. I have gone 186 miles and put in 3.9 gallons. I was on reserve for 32 miles with the light going on at 154 miles. They get better with mileage. NUTS
