Last December when I was in Alabama...I worked with Odie to design a set of Uly Heat Blankets. After riding back to Colorado I tweaked the design a little and had Odie make me another set. Now here is what I believe to be the perfect All-Season Heat Blanket solution for XB12X (and I guess XT too). This is a two piece design. The white side goes up...
And the reflective side gets place down.
The smaller piece was designed to use year-round (at least I will) to prevent that slice of rear cylinder hot air from slipping between the seat and frame and burning my inner thigh. But the warm air can still flow under the seat to help warm up the booty in colder months.
There are three holes cut into the small blanket, two for mounting under the rear portion of the air box cover (while allowing the air box cover to still mount flush), and the other trapezoid shaped hole allows the seat to mount as normal.
Notice that the right side is long enough to overlap the frame a couple inches...
This way it can be tucked into the frame for a better seal and will not allow any heat blast to sneak out of the gap between the seat and frame. I will probable use a touch of black paint to make this gap a little less conspicuous.
The second blanket overlaps and attaches with Velcro to the smaller blanket and prevents the seat from getting too warm in the summer months.
This configuration was designed to use the OEM air deflectors for the side coverage.
The seat section of the heat blanket extends all the way back to the battery, and then folds down for full coverage.
The OEM under seat storage case holds the blanket nicely in place for a perfectly tailored fit.
The thickness of the blanket does not cause any problem when locking the seat in place.
I am really looking forward to using the full setup this summer. I'm really happy with the quality and fit of this little Uly accessory. If you want a set for summer too, get you orders in early. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/17143/334720.html?1202175957 Tell Odie that you want the "Maximum" two-piece heat blanket set! |

I love Odie's heat shield on my XB9SX (and so does my right leg!). --Sean |

Great job Maximum. That is what I was trying to get Odie to do after I bought his first shields and needed more in the front/frame area. Those should make a great improvement. |

Excellent job. You may want to slip some between the heat and the ecm and bas (if your bas is still there). |

I like the looks of that material and the front section that goes under the air box cover. I'd really prefer to not heat my battery and ECM and would like to tuck that material down in front of the ECM (but behind the side vents). Can a shorter rear section be made (maybe 6" long that could be tucked down in front of the ECM?) I'd buy one like that if it's made available. |

Those look exactly like something I want. Just added my name to the list. I always found the original Uly blankets to be a tad big. These seem to be the ticket. |

Prowler: If you go with a 6" second section, you will probably need to remove the front ECM bolt, tuck the shield under the ECM, and then reinstall the bolt.
But I really like the fit of the full system! We'll see how it performs this summer. |

Maximum, thanks for the photo and info. Stuffing it under the ECM was the plan. I just want to make sure that the side openings under the seat can stay open to allow some of the heat out. The full system you've got looks great, but I'm thinking that keeping the battery and ECM cooler will help them last longer (in particular, the battery). I'm hoping Odie will make one per my request so I can try it out. We'll see what happens...... |

All- price on the new 2-piece Uly barrier will be $65 plus shipping. A lot more material and time compared to the older version. Barriers usually ship for around $5 via USPS. I will be adding these barriers to my website tonight if my real job permits time-wise. Thanks for your interest. Prowler- I can make it however you desire. I would suggest going with Maximums' advice. I don't have a Uly to mess with so I will defer to him and his measurements, etc. |

Great Job Max. The black paint does add a touch of class. Odie, I am interested in the front airbox piece and a 6-8 inch tail to tuck under the ecm/bas. I like the way max left the side vents open for air flow. I have a modified version of your full set now which includes the under the air box piece. Do you offer something like that? PS: Near record high temperatures today... Partly sunny. Isolated showers in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 80s. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent. Treadmarks- I just received a request for the same thing a few minutes ago. I'm going to modify some patterns this weekend and it should be a done deal. Email me or post up on Monday and I'll let you know what I came up with. Have fun riding this weekend. I'll making pipes, Graters, barriers, etc. Oh well, MBV isn't too far away now....... |

Odie, looks like I may have started a "short blanket revolt". Did you get a chance to make the one I requested per our phone conversation last week. (not like I'm in a huge hurry for it...we've got more snow than we know what to do with.....) |

Prowler- it shipped the day we spoke on the phone. Should arrive anyday now. Treadmarks- Yes Sir. I will let you know when it's done and I'll get one out the door to you. It's 63 right now and will be 72 tomorrow and sunny! Not as nice as your weather down there but it's ridable year-round.To bad I'll be stuck to the plasma cutter and welder all weekend trying to play catch up....... |

Odie, as is typical around here, it got delivered to the wrong house by USPS. Neighbor dropped it off today, fit's perfect, thanks much. Can't ride now because of the weather, but after seeing it installed tucked under the ECM, I'm convinced that it's the way to go to keep heat out from under the seat. Looking forward to seeing how well it works when it actually gets warm here......someday. (Message edited by prowler on February 23, 2008) |

Hey guys, I was about to order one of these when I started to think about another benefit that has not been identified with this new heat barrier. It appears that the new barrier will keep the rear cylinder heat from directly heating the frame which in turn heats the fuel. My butt dyno always tells me my bike makes the best power 20 minutes or less after I start it, and I think it is due to the fuel getting heated. This begs the question... why does the left side of the front heat barrier not extend as far as the right? Extending the left as far as the right would also aid in keeping the frame/fuel cooler... Any thoughts? I am thinking of having Odie make me one that is symmetrical... with two long tabs on each side. Maybe there are clearance issues? Wade |

Wade, From the way I look at it, there is not the same gap on the left as the right, and therefore there is not room to tuck it in the left side. And really the right only goes down far enough to prevent the hot air from the rear cylinder from burning the inside of your leg. If you want to cover the entire inside of the fuel cell, then it would probably be best to line the inside like a couple others have recently posted about, with an adhesive backed heat deflecting material. |

Wade- I defer to Maximum. He has the Uly and I have a 12Scg. I am planning on making a barrier that helps to reflect heat from the engine away from the inner frame area in the attempt to keep the fuel a little cooler. Unfortunately, I'm waaaaay busy right now and trying to get everything out of here so I can prep for MBV. Hopefully in April before it gets too hot I can come up with one. Nav18tor- I just got done talking with my ISP. They are working on trying to figure out what is up with my email. Sometimes incoming and outgoing emails are returned as undeliverable. The new 2-piece Uly barrier is $65 and shipping will be approximately $8. PayPal on my email address works (I hope). If you need anything else please let me know. Odie. |

Hey Odie: Mine came in today. Thanks much. And thanks to BWB for this forum. In addition to the blanket, I just finished my CUSTOM MADE light bar (from Home Depot piece of angle iron and Wally World <$20.00 driving lights. Both idea's came from here. } Dennis |
