Thanks guys. I'll be trying the least expensive solution first. I bought a set of cutoff discs for my fake dremel tool, and I have a feeling I can make that work. I'm a city boy with no garage and no knowledge of welding or access to welding paraphernalia. Would love to learn. For the sake of interest here is a pic of 2 of the spacers. See if you can tell which one has the rust damage...

Hi, I just bought a 2000 Buell Blast from a seller in Santa Rosa, CA it's in OK shape though it had been downed badly. I'm going to use it to commute to school and part time work ^^ I like the motorcycle and will restore it to stock condition for my needs. I have one question for now that you all probably can't answer! Lol! I want to make my bike quieter, it has the stock muffler but sounds like a loud lawnmower, I want it to sound like a big bore Honda scooter or something, quiet and smooth. Any suggesstions? Oh and this was probably someone's beater here in the Bay Area! Maybe someone on this forum, Lol! Robyn |

Welcome Robyn! The stock exhaust is quiet. I wonder if you really have the stock exhaust or it may be broken or modified. EZ is close to you and I'm sure he'll be happy to take a listen. PS For restoration parts check ebay-just be cautious as there are some parts that will sell for more than new-buyer beware! |

Robynmz: Just a shot in the dark, but I find my bike gets louder when I'm low on oil. If you're new to the Blast, you may not be familiar with how quickly the thing eats oil. Check it out and see if it helps a little. BTW mine was actually modified to be louder! I like the noise though. Alerts the taxis to my presence. Welcome aboard. Mike |

Bearings are on! I'll tell you, though, they were not easy to get into the wheel. I was able to wirebrush most of that rust off the spacers and axle. I used the tripod jack idea and the dremel cutoff disc and was able to do the whole job without a second set of hands. Thanks to all who helped me out. The bike feels like it's gliding. Next steps are new axle (mine is slightly bent) and painting the wheels. I've been documenting every step and taking pictures, so maybe it can be stored as a tutorial for noobs like me when it's done. I hammered the bearings in using something that covered the whole bearing, so as not to harm them. Is there an easier way to get those suckers in, short of some huge/expensive tool the dealer probably has? Mike (Message edited by mikedog on May 08, 2006) |

I have a bearing press that I made using threaded stock, nuts and washers ($10 max). I end up using it for something about once a year so it's more than paid for itself. A professional bear press is about $100 (well at least for bicycles tools). |

Do you do anything special to ensure it goes in straight? Or does it work itself out as you turn the nut? |

The nature of the tool ensures it goes in straight. The axle should be coated with anti seize. Grease would be a second choice if anti seize is not available. |

I only used WD40 on the axle (making sure it didn't get into the bearings) but I'll be removing it again soon to paint the wheels. I'll put some on then. I should really replace it because it's slightly bent, but only very slightly... |

Hi Guys, Thank you for the welcome! ^^ I found a broken exhaust manifold stud and will replace it, that's probably where the noise is coming from Lol! I'm actually looking for a Buell Blast Pro Series Exhaust but understand that they aren't made any more. And by the way I inquired with a local bike shop about replacing the stud and changing the fluids, they offered the 5,000 mile check up instead for $375.00 Ick! Sticker Shock! I told them I would call back for an appointment. ^^ Oh an I am putting the stock aircleaner back on with a K & N filter element, the carburetor has already been rejetted. This Blast has been laid down multiple times but is still straight, the engine seems very clean, I am also going to change the plastic at some later date to bright yellow ^^ and try to find some extra rims to strip and have anodized Bright Yellow or Gold (I like bright yellow) LOl! I am going to have fun with this bike (I'm an art student) and make it more noticeable. Robyn |

I found over the weekend on Daves ride your uly to the up that a blast will wheely over a dirt hill, just dont try to turn slowly on loose sand. Broken turn signal was the only damage thankfully, except for my pride. Buellkat I forgot to take your number with me, but we went through whitecloud around 2:30 pm today. |

Nick, I take it you and Stu made it the rest of the way! Buellkat, after seeing Nicks Pro-series Intake, I have given up all hope of reinventing the wheel. The Big Kids tire is ordered, another Avon, and The Little Kids motorcycle safety certificate will be picked up tomorrow. Now I just have to order wheel bearings, do a couple of oil changes, and all will be ready for another ride! Also, where is Bagdadbueller posting his pictures of the ride UP? Swampy he emailed them to me. I am posting them tonight on daves ride to the up thread. I will also post up my pics there. If you want I can email them to you. We made it home safely about 7:30. I looked at my odometer this morning. I put 1400 miles on the blast since I left my house thursday night. |

I trick I learned about bearings from working on one of the many old jeeps I have had. Put the bearing into the freezer in a sealed plastic zip lock bag. let it sit for awhile. Clean all surfaces then take a hair drier and warm the place the bearing is going into. Go get the bearing out of freezer and 99 times out of 100 it will slip into place no tapping banging or forceing. the other 1 time it may need only light taping with a soft hammer. Works for me.

Juggalo, It looks like you can just order the lense. I changed the oil and the primary on the Little Kids Blast, Tomorrow he goes for his third party test for his drivers license. Maybe by Friday he will legally be able to ride his bike! |

I love Dennis Kirk. Not only do they have the biggest online selection and a fairly slick website - their distribution center is less than 100 miles from my house. I ordered another set of marker lights for my tail (hopefully they'll be brighter) yesterday afternoon around 2:00. I got the tracking number at 1am this morning - and checked on it just now. The package is already on a truck in my city and listed as "out for delivery". This is a grand total of 18 hours after I placed the order... And, I chose the cheapest "standard ground shipping" option. Wormhole-fast shipping! |

Jugallo that can be ordered from Daves and he will get it out to you fairly quickly. When mine needed replaceing I got the whole thing. It was not that expensive. If you do replace just the lens be very careful removing and replacing the screws that hold the lens in place. they will strip in a heart beat. While you are at it get a new fly screen also not that expensive and keep the old as a spare. |

Sorry about the pic size I was using a new program for uploading my pics this time and havent quite figured out the resizing yet. I am ordering two turn signals from dave. I have decided to put rear signals on the front to tuck them in a little. I dont need a new flyscreen right now. I just need to clean it up and get all the bugs off of it. I will work on resizing it tomorrow night, I have to work a double tonight, so I wont have time until this weekend. |

Call me crazy but I really think this would be a great thing to paint the wheels with. It's spray-on bed-liner for pickup trucks. I wanted a matte finish anyway, and this seems more durable and rust-resistant than other spray-can paint. Whaddaya think http://duplicolor.com/products/truckbed.html |

I've seen that applied to frames and even the whole body of a Trail-prepped Jeep in the past. I wouldn't put in on the wheels. It is heavy and coats thick. It would weigh down and mess up the balance of your wheels big time. |

I concur with Naustin. Plus, the Aluminum Wheels shouldn't rust after you paint them. Had a buddy in high-school with a Blazer that was coated in Rhino Liner, we used to write on it with chalk! James |
