They've been getting beat and just lost by twenty points to Puerto Rico. Bring back the college boys! (Message edited by blake on August 15, 2004) |

Don't even get me started on how badly basketball has fallen It's all a bunch of hoodliums and gangsters. They deserve to have their a&&es handed to them. The days of the first Dream Team are long behind us |

Plus...you have to remember that a lot of the NBA all stars are from foreign countries. They dont play for the USA in the olympics. I dont agree with using pro's for the olympics anyways. |

The USA was like 3 for 22 from the shortened college range 3-point line. Puerto Rico was over 50% from the 3-point line. |

Mixed feelings about that game, as I could cheer on both teams. I was born in Puerto Rico and have seen the players when they play with their local Puerto Rican basketball teams. If somebody was going to be the first to beat the US in the Olympics, I'm glad that Puerto Rican Team did it. There's going to be an awesome party there tonight! The current US team plays like 5 guys on the court at the same time. The rest, Puerto Rico included, play like teams (Message edited by josé_quiñones on August 15, 2004) |

The original Dream team was comprised of real all-stars who all belong in the hall of fame (except Christian Latner) They also played as a team and were excited to play together. I remember watching them because I was in Tech school (Air Force) at the time it we all gathered in the day room to watch the games. The "team" I saw lose today was everything that I have come to dislike about the NBA. I am glad they lost and I hope the entire NBA is ashamed. Perhaps the election committee should watch the movie Miracle and learn something... |

Bingo, they suck. I think the only one on that team that knows how to be a team player is Tim Duncan. As for Latner, he may not be a hall-of-famer, but he's a damn good team player. |

I have no complaints about using pro's for the Olympics because the NBA has the best players in the world but maybe throwing a college coach in the mix would help a bit or maybe no super stars of the NBA just average Salary players who might play for the country instead of a sneaker deal. |

Average NBA players won't work. What made the Dream Team 1 so great was their ability to completely outclass the rest of the world. Average players with only three weeks of practice cannot do that. Here is a thought. I would bet money that says if yo would put Dream Team 1 back on the court today (except for Barkley who is just too fat) they would still play better then the team that lost yesterday. |

Hell, put Barkley out there. This team can't shoot from the outside, at least the "Real Dream Team" could shoot from the outside. All you have to do is shut this team down from the inside, which is rather easy to do, and you can win. |

The USA coach said that he's used to coaching tactics rather than having to work on motivating the players. That says a lot, doesn't it? |

The team is chosen by the Team USA Basketball committee, but most of the players that were chosen made excuses not to play. Then instead of filling the team with usable players they simply grabbed players who seemed to have the most fame with no regard to position or ability which is why there is no one on the team that can shoot a three pointer. |

Actually if we really wanted to dominate again this year we could have just sent the entire Detroit Pistons team. They play as a team and are well rounded. Team USA looks just like the Lakers did in the finals. |

I don't watch NBA basketball and really don't know any of the current players but when I read Shaq declined an invitation to compete on the Olympic team it upset me. I'm sick to death of all the media hype over these overpaid guys anyway and when one of the most popular players won't play for the U.S. it just validates my opinion. CAN'T WAIT FOR TRACK & FIELD TO START!! |

Wait-wait-wait ------- Did I miss the sarcasm or just the point? Did you really say that you are less than pleased with the men's Basketball team AND that you're looking forward to T & F? I want every USA team to win gold and every US athlete to be on the podium, but that's not going to happen. So if I got to pick who should loose, it would be the (Bad) Dream team and the low down dirty cheatin' drug users on the T & F teams. |

Actually there was no sacasm intended. If you are an overpaid worldwide star who is asked to represent your country I would think your media/agent staff would tell you to do it, even though you would think you should anyway! Granted the media has latched onto a VERY few T &F athletes and villified a huge group of very hard working athletes who just want a chance to compete for the USA. And as you've probably noticed, those athletes have not been a force in the trials. Pressure, you bet!! And as uausal the media has missed the kids who have proven talents but don't have the media machine as some of the so called stars. Same old story, find the 1%er's to run down everyone, sound familiar? I'm a Track & Field coach in real life and I'm probably more discussed about the doping problem than anyone on this board but having competed with guys that made Olympic teams and as a friend of a few that just missed it this year I can tell you that the athletes want them out as well. They want to know they have a fair opportunity to compete whether we're talking about Track, Swimming or any other event. My point is that the BBall guys were asked to compete, no trials or anything. Why wouldn't you say, "Yes, I want to represent the USA?" I'm no anti-any sport in the games, I just would like to see our best athletes representing us... |

The idea of Basketball in the olympics with the USA using pro players is silly anyway. You don't see other countries building "All Star" soccer teams from their pro leagues. We don't use pro Baseball players because their season is more important then national pride. Hockey uses pro players and even suspended their season in 2002 for the olympics, but it wasn't nearly as good as watching the 1980 team. If the NBA cared they would have the best of the All-star team out there and they don't. So why don't we start a real national team with guys that want to be there and I would bet we would still dominate in international play. Don't believe me? Go down to your local city basketball court on a warm friday night and watch the action. There are some great players that either never made the NBA from college, or never went to college. |

If the Olympics would go back to allowing amateurs we could dominate again, but other countries use their pro players as well (European teams, China, etcc..). How about athletes like the young girl, Mariel Zaguris, just out of high school who comes out of nowhere to beat the world champion in the gold medal match to win our first gold medal in fencing in exactly 100 yrs? It's athletes like this we need to celebrate. Those that strive, work their tail off to earn enough to be able to compete for the United States. |

Hey guys lighten up a tad. I know it's national pride but remember it's just sports. As far as some people being asked to play and don'y maybe we don't know the whole story. Like what if someone has their father dying in a hospital would you go. Someones wife is due for a baby at the time the games are on. Someone whose marriage is in serious trouble and wants to fix it up. Well each to his own but can we give some of these people the benifit of the doubt. These are just people after all. We all have problems and some of us just can't do what others want for a lot of reasons. Just maybe they don't want those reasons in the media either. Just a thought. |

Some also have clauses in their contracts that either forbid them from playing or if they do get hurt while playing for a team which they dont have a contract with, they could get screwed. |

"I know it's national pride but remember it's just sports." More than that to guys like me. Was never a world class anything, but having competed in a wide range of sports throughout my life, I would say that if I was asked, I would go. Most would kill to do so. It's also the one place where we can get together with all the other countries in the world and share a high level of respect with each other. Does the rest of the world respect the USA any other time of the year? It means a lot to have our world class athletes be ambassadors of our great nation. The feeling of competing and giving everything you have, win or lose, still brings tears to my eyes. It's a shame that some extremely talented, yet pompous, over paid prima donnas have forgotten what it's like to be hungry. Why stop at being the best in the USA? Why not try to be the best in the world? And I agree with Greg about their contracts. Anyone with the heart and balls would say "screw it!" and go anyway. |

...but most of the players that were chosen made excuses not to play It amazes me that 7 foot tall, 240+ pound guys are AFRAID to go to Greece. I would like to point out that the US Women's Gymnastics team is composed of 5 foot tall, 88 pound, 16 year old girls that fought for the chance to represent the USA in Greece, and not one of them is in any danger of getting an endorsement contract from Nike. Let the amateurs play. |
