I drive an 03 Blast and a little while ago the belt snapped. It only had 6k miles, but I chalked it up to the belt being old and a hard downshift and replaced it. However, the other morning the new belt with ~600 miles snapped as well. I let it warm up in neutral, shifted down to first and POP! It was a very cold morning (10-15 degrees, car was in the shop) so I'm sure that played a large part but that still seems like more than a coincidental with such a new belt. I inspected the sprocket and I found one spot with rust, but I don't think that should be enough to cause a problem.... I can get a new sprocket from HD for 90 dollars, but I don't want to if that's not the issue. I've bought a new belt, but I was hoping y'all might have suggestions as to what the problem might be before I put it on, or if I'm just an idiot for riding it in the cold like that. I appreciate it!

How did you install the belt? Some knucklehead posted a YouTube video on replacing the belt which could definitely lead to premature failure. The belt goes on easy. No forcing. Twisting the belt up could damage it and putting the belt on, if very cold, could (and I'm guessing) cause premature failure. The book would tell you to replace that sprocket. I know some people have had bad luck with belts like yours and I've never found the reason. It's a non adjustable, very simple set up. |

The first belt actually snapped at the same time as I was going to replace the tires so I brought it all to a shop and let them do it. (didn't want to deal with mounting and balancing the tires) I'll put this one on myself and make sure I don't force it. If there is nothing really adjustable than it probably was a combo of that and the weather. Thanks! |

Very very easy to put on. It can be done on the side of the road, easily. Small sprocket first, then big sprocket-starting on the inside of the wheel/pulley NOT from the outside & over the pulley cover. If you can grab a used belt cheap, keep it under the seat. |
