The facts are that There were at least three maybe four variants of the WP shock, ALL WITH DIFFERENT SHOCK EYES. There was a blanket recall of all WP shocks. Without wishing to drag this on for much loner....There were not different shock eyes on WP shocks. There was just one type fitted to S1/S3/M2 shocks (S2 may have been different but were never imported here so I can't tell). hence all the WP shocks for these models were recalled under the scheme. There have however been a number of different Showa replacements with different chock eyes, as explained in my previous post. H-D only had one shock made by WP at that time, and that was for the Buell models, nothing else, so cancelling the contract was directly because of this problem. If one WP shock broke then that is one too many, and was enough for a drastically expensive recall to be carried out that almost buried the company. If you choose to ignore that then it is up to you, and if you think that a WP shock is safer than a Showa shock you are ignoring the evidence of the recall. Please kill this thread People it's like a bunch of kids trying to get the last word. H-D may do a lot of things but they never thru away piles of money on recalls. The things that get recalled is usually done because if they let it go the law suits make the cost of the recall pale by comparison. The parts don't have to break on a customers bike to start a recall. In 1987 or there abouts the Sportsters and FXR's came out with a 7 spoke wheel instead of the normal 9 spoke. One of those wheels broke in the testing center in Alabama those 7 spoke wheels were recalled and replaced with the older wheel. No wheel broke on the street that we ever heard of but off they came. Yes, there were M2/S1/S2/3 WP shocks with some welded just on the edges and some welded the entire way around, that's two variants in addition to the S2 shock with a threaded billet aluminum end. |

I, however, have actually eyeballed the results of a catastrophic Showa failure. It struck a friends X1 back when I was doing the "Showa Shock Report" every month. I would not use a Showa shock under any circumstances . . .even as a door stop. YMMV . ..always consider the source. (Message edited by doncasto on August 09, 2013) |
