Hi, my name is Jason and this is the first street bike I have ever owned. I bought my 2006 Blast with 8,500 miles on it a couple weeks ago for 1,500.00 I have rode it a few times before taking my riders safety course for the air base...sshhh dont tell. I have noticed a small puddle of oil when it sets overnight or for a few days. I just changed the oil in it the other day as well. It is leaking from the bolt on the front of the motor that is right behind the horn (the one where it is hard to get a wrench on) I know this isnt normal but is it common, and what can I do? also under the boot on my clutch cable was seeping someoil as well, I read on here about dirt dobbers clogging a drain line, checked mine and sure enough it was clogged, I thought that was the problem but under further searching I found this.

Welcome to the Thumper Forum Lilblueblaster! The bolt you are showing holds the "Do Not Remove" bracket to the cylinder head. That bolt is not leaking. It is a special bolt with a special torque proceedure so do not touch the bolt unless it breaks or you have to remove the "Do Not Remove" bracket from the cylinder head. More than likely you are looking at oil from somewhere up higher on the cylinder head, like a rocker cover gasket, a rocker arm to cylinder head gasket or a leaking crankcase ventilator grommet. To ID the leak precisely remove the fuel tank and check around the top of the cylinder head and you will find it. Also, do the easy things first so the first thing I would check would be the oil dipstick and see if someone overfilled or spilled oil when filling the oil reservoir/frame. Good luck, let us know what you find.... |

Alright, I took the tank off, and that grommet was wet with oil around it, but I don't know if it could be leaking that much oil. I would have about a dime size of oil every morning or so when I come out to my bike, I cleaned everything up and I am going to ride it for awhile and take the tank back off and see if it was actually that. While I had the tank off I did find that the bolts to I guess the motor mount up front, the one on the left has a ground wire to it, were backed out till where the bolt shank head was below the nut on both sides. I tighend those back down, I am pretty sure they aren't supposed to be that loose. |

Good! The bolts you do not want to mess with are the ones that actually hold the "Do Not Remove" bracket to the head. The ground wire is OK to tighten. You are diagnosing the problem correctly....carry on! |

SSSOOOOO.... I pulled into my garage tonight after I thought everything might be good, and there it was, the dime size oil spot below my clutch cable on the ground. Could this be coming from the fitting on the clutch cable? |

Alright after riding it for 15 minutes this morning I found where it was coming from, I also found that the place that did my oil change filled it up to much it was over the full line. So I drained 1/2 a quart out of it.
The oil was bubbling out of where the bare aluminum color meets the black and tricking down to the bolt I do not touch and then down my clutch cable and onto the floor. So now where do I go from here???

Rocker cover gasket? Clean up the area real good, run, repeat! Rocker cover gaskets are not too bad to do, I have done, um, quite a few.... |

Concur, but definitely make sure the oil level is right before ripping things apart. Otherwise you might be trying to fix a problem you dont really have. |

FWIW: I just had mine down for what I thought was a rocker cover leak. Turns out it was the top seal on the pushrod tube. Chris C |

Got the oil changed the other day when my mechanic put on new tires. It was way to full, filled it while cold, drained 3/4 a quart out today. Hopefully problem solved |

Alright fellas, I am really stumped on this one. I still have the leak but it seems to be coming from the clutch cable adjustment under the rubber boot, any suggestions? |

Did you pull the boot off the adjuster? You could have residual oil from the overfill lurking inside the cover. Pull the boot up/down & thoroughly clean the whole adjuster area. Make sure you clean the inside of the boot. Replace boot & monitor to see if any oil continues to come out. Good luck! Chris C |

Concur! Also, if you've ever had the cable disconnected from the clutch lever and laying on the ground, the primary can leak out the cable too. Its also possible to leak out the cable if the trans/primary is overfilled and/or the trans vent hose is blocked. If these two scenarios are possible, looking at the fluid will tell you if its from the engine or trans. That might be difficult to tell though and tasting is easier. Oil tastes alkali and trans fluid tastes more bitter (though I suspect synthetic is probably the same unless engine oil is used in both. Ingestion of lubrication products may cause vomiting, diarrhea, cancer or just plain weird looks). Other scenarios are possible, but even less likely. |

Ok so I did the taste test and it definatley wasnt bitter. I am thinking the rocker box gasket is leaking and running down the clutch cable. It seems to leak more when I dont ride it than when I do. Days I do ride there may be a nickel size oil spot on the floor, it has set a couple days because I am painting the plastics and I looked down and there was about a inch circle or so. |

Finally, took time to take the vent tube off, there was more dirt dobbers further up in the tube. First morning walking out to the bike and being no oil underneath it for once, either that or it is just out. |
